Smiling Is One of the Healthiest Habits (even if under our masks)

Smiling is one of the healthiest habits. A smile is universally recognized as a sign of friendliness and happiness worldwide. Smiling does not cost you a single penny and is great for your health. Most of the time you smile spontaneously without effort or thought. Even when you fake a smile, science has shown that you still reap the same benefits. How many times have you been at a party and noticed someone across the room that had a fantastic smile or had contagious laughter? Yep, smiling even makes you more attractive to others. Most believe that babies learn to smile back at adults as a way to mimic them. In reality though, a child born blind smiles just as much in response to his mother’s touch or voice.

So Many Reasons to Smile

  • relieves stress
  • makes you look younger
  • boosts your immune system
  • changes a bad mood to a happy mood
  • makes you look more attractive to others
  • contagious and draws people to you
  • helps lower your blood pressure
  • helps you stay positive
  • makes you look more confident and successful
  • smiling is a natural drug because it releases endorphins, natural pain killers and serotonin

Fun Facts About Smiling

You’ve probably heard that it takes more muscles to frown than to smile, and that the average person has 43 muscles in their face. Most of these muscles are controlled by the facial nerve (7th cranial nerve) which originates in the brain stem. The facial nerve exits the skull and splits into 5 branches. These branches reach different parts of your face so you can smile, frown, pout, wink, talk, etc. All of this goes on with limited effort on your part, if any.

The Bigger Picture of a Smile

Every time you smile at someone, their brain encourages them to smile back at you. By smiling, you are creating an environment that allows both individuals to release feel good chemicals in your brains. Smiling also activates reward centers, and accomplishes you to be more attractive. These benefits alone help increase the chances of you living longer. An abundance of benefits! Smile more, it’s good for you!
