Atlas: Upper Cervical Care

NUCCA is an acronym that stands for National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association. Upper cervical simply means upper neck. Your spine can get off balance and mis-align with any injury. Conditions such as low back pain, TMJ disorders, neck pain, headaches, migraines, disc damage and even vertigo are commonly seen with upper neck injuries.

Your body minimizes tension in your spine from injuries by compensating with poor posture and body misalignment. The head protrudes forward or tilts to one side, the shoulders roll in, and the hips twist causing one leg to appear shorter than the other. It is very rare for a patient to have a true short leg, and it is usually just due to the body being off balance. Once a patient is adjusted and the misalignment corrected, the patient’s legs balance out and are the same length. NUCCA is a gentle and unique form of care that restores your skull, your spine and your hips to their neutral aligned position.

The NUCCA procedure activates your health by using a very light touch on your neck behind your ear. We focus on the alignment of the atlas bone, also known as C1. This misalignment interrupts the vital communication between your body and your brain, resulting in pain, tension, stress, and health symptoms. A sports injury, childhood fall, birth trauma, acute or chronic illness, or car accident can result in upper neck misalignments resulting in many common health conditions.

Even though a NUCCA adjustment is focused on your neck, it has global effects on your entire spine and health. NUCCA is extremely precise, and is not like any other form of spinal care you may have received in the past. There is no cracking, popping or twisting of your spine.

Brainstem Compression

When your atlas is misaligned, it can compress your brainstem. The brain stem is the central hub where all nerve impulses leaving or entering your brain must travel through to reach the rest of your body. Many important functions are controlled at this level of the nervous system, such as breathing, heartbeat, digestion, sleep and coordination.

Even the smallest misalignment in your upper neck throws the weight of your head off balance, along with the rest of your body. A variety of  acute and chronic health conditions can develop when there is compression in this delicate area.

The Nervous System

Spinal nerves are sensitive to stress and pressure. When your spine becomes misaligned, it stresses the nerves affecting normal nerve impulses. This extra stress on the nervous system affects how your body functions. Although we associate nerves primarily with sensation and pain, they are responsible for other important functions. The nervous system coordinates:

1. All body functions, including those you don’t consciously think about such as heart rate, digestion and breathing.

2. Your ability to move your muscles.

3. Your ability to sense and feel.

4. How you relate to the world around you.

Our doctors look for postural distortions, pelvic imbalances and leg length differences. These are signs of spinal misalignment. Injury, damage or trauma can misalign your spine, causing nerve interference in your body. When this happens, a host of problems can arise within days or even years.

A NUCCA upper cervical adjustment is based on the analysis of your unique anatomy from your x-rays. We study your x-ray films and analyze them with precise mathematical calculations, using geometry and physics. X-rays are an important component of NUCCA Spinal Care because without them, we wouldn’t know how to adjust you. The anatomy of your head and neck is unique to you, just like a fingerprint.

Our doctors will take pre-adjustment x-rays from various angles focusing on your head and neck. These initial x-rays determine the degree and direction that the chiropractor will use to adjust your spinal misalignment. Post-adjustment you will be checked to ensure that your spine is in a balanced position. Patients are closely monitored on every visit to ensure a quick recovery.

Don’t give up! We treat many patients successfully with NUCCA Spinal Care and our state-of-the-art spinal decompression technology.

Going over my x-rays with my neuromuscular dentist I learned I have a twisted c1 and c2. Knowing I prefer a more holistic route, my Dr. asked if I had ever thought about seeing a chiropractor. I told him I was seeing one for the last 6 mo. At that point he asked if my Chiropractor was a Nucca chiropractor. Nucca huh? To be honest I have never heard the term before. He informed me that Nucca deals with upper cervical and is extremely beneficial in dealing with TMJ and the issues I mentioned such as upper thoracic tension etc. Accordingly, I was given Dr. Young's info and called asap. From my first phone call Joselyn made me feel so welcomed and answered my ridiculous questions with patience and understanding. I have been seeing Dr. Young for about a month thus far and could not be more satisfied with my care. I really look forward to every appointment. I am seeing results as far as my pains go and also learning so much in the process. Dr. Young has no agenda and is thorough, knowledgeable and empathetic to his patients. If you're considering Nucca definitely give Dr. Young consideration. You will feel you made the right decision from your first phone call.
