What Supplements Do You Recommend?

Immune System Supplements. We get lots of questions from patients about what supplements help to boost your immune system.Below is a quick list of our favorite supplements and recommended doses. Please consult with your primary care doctor before taking them. To maximize the benefits of taking supplements, make sure you do your research to make sure you are taking high-quality products. We prefer supplements that are packaged in glass bottles over plastic.

Immune System Supplements

1. Vitamin D3

Vitamin D deficiency is very common. Along with the Vitamin Council, we recommend the following estimated amounts of vitamin D3 in the absence of proper sun exposure:

  • Kids under 1 year – 1,000 IU.
  • Kids over 1 year – 1,000 IU per every 25 lbs of body weight.
  • Adolescents and adults – at least 5,000 IU.
  • Pregnant and lactating moms – at least 6,000 IU.

2. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

When it comes to fat, there’s one type we rarely get enough of: omega-3 fatty acids. Two crucial omega-3’s are EPA and DHA. They are primarily found in fish and certain nuts and seeds. Omega-3 fatty acids help your body function better and have huge benefits.

For children:The EPA:DHA ratio should be 1:2900 mg of EPA + DHA per dayFor adults:The EPA:DHA ratio should be 2:13,000 mg of EPA + DHA per day

3. Probiotics D3

We highly recommend taking probiotics, especially after taking antibiotics and using hand sanitizer. Antibiotics and hand sanitizers do a great job of killing bugs, both good and bad bugs. In order to keep your gut healthy, consider replenishing your gut flora by taking probiotics after a round of antibiotics or if you use hand sanitizer regularly.

4. Zinc

Zinc inadequacy is more common than zinc deficiency. Inadequacy shows up most often in adults over the age of 60. It also shows up if you eat a mostly plant-based diet. Compared to animal proteins, plant-based foods contain less zinc. Plus, whole grains and some legumes contain compounds that make it harder for your body to fully absorb zinc. We recommend a zinc spray over zinc lozenges, like this one here.
