In this blog post, we’ll cover 10 of the daily habits you can employ to make sure your spine stays nice and healthy.

Why Your Daily Routine Shapes Your Spine’s Future

The spine is not a static structure. It responds constantly to the forces you place on it every single day. Sit hunched for eight hours, load your discs with poor lifting mechanics, and skip hydration… and you are accelerating disc degeneration whether you feel it right now or not.

Spinal discs do not have a direct blood supply, which means they rely entirely on movement and pressure changes to absorb the nutrients they need to stay healthy. What you do (and don’t do) throughout the day either feeds that process or starves it.

The good news is that the reverse is also true. Patients who commit to spine-supportive habits regularly demonstrate better disc height on imaging, fewer episodes of acute pain, and a significantly lower likelihood of needing interventional treatment down the road.

These ten habits are the foundation of everything we recommend to our patients.

The 10 Habits We Recommend for Spinal Health

1. Sit With Intentional Posture

Sitting is one of the most compressive positions your lumbar discs experience. Slouching forward shifts your center of gravity, dramatically increases intradiscal pressure, and places chronic strain on the posterior ligaments of the spine. Make a habit of sitting with your feet flat on the floor, your lumbar spine supported, your shoulders relaxed back, and your screen at eye level. A chair with proper lumbar support is one of the best investments you can make in your spinal future.

2. Break Up Sitting Every 30 to 45 Minutes

Even perfect posture becomes damaging when held without interruption. Static loading (holding any one position for too long) reduces circulation to the spinal muscles and limits the fluid exchange discs depend on. Set a timer and stand, walk, or stretch for two to three minutes every 30 to 45 minutes throughout your workday. This simple habit is one of the most powerful things you can do to protect your discs over time.

3. Strengthen Your Core Every Day

Your core muscles are the primary stabilizers of your lumbar spine. When they are weak, the vertebrae, discs, and ligaments absorb forces they were never designed to handle alone. A daily core routine does not need to be long, 10 to 15 minutes of planks, dead bugs, bridges, and bird dogs is enough to build the deep stabilizing strength that protects your spine through every activity you do. Weak core muscles are among the most consistent findings we see in patients with chronic lower back pain.

4. Lift With Your Legs Every Single Time

The mechanics of improper lifting are simple and destructive: when you bend at the waist and reach forward to pick something up, your lumbar discs absorb a compressive force that can be many times your body weight. The correct pattern is to hinge at the hips and knees, keep your chest up, engage your core, and keep the object close to your body as you stand. This applies to everything, not just heavy loads at the gym. Consider this advice when lifting grocery bags, laundry baskets, and toddlers. One bad lift can trigger a herniation that takes months to resolve.

You’d be amazed at how many patients we see in our San Diego office after they improperly lifted something that seemed easy!

5. Hydrate Your Discs

Spinal discs are approximately 80% water when healthy. This water content is what gives them their shock-absorbing capacity and their height. As discs dehydrate (from age, inactivity, and chronic compression) they lose height, become brittle, and are far more susceptible to herniation and degeneration. Drinking adequate water throughout the day (aim for half your body weight in ounces as a starting point) supports the passive fluid exchange that keeps discs plump and functional. This is one of the simplest and most underused spine health strategies there is.

6. Sleep in a Spine-Neutral Position

You spend roughly one-third of your life asleep. The position you sleep in either allows your spine to recover and decompress, or it maintains the same mechanical stress that accumulated during your day. Back sleepers should place a pillow beneath their knees to preserve the lumbar curve. Side sleepers should keep a pillow between their knees to prevent the top hip from rotating forward and twisting the lumbar spine. Stomach sleeping is the one position we strongly advise against. Stomach sleeping forces the cervical spine into prolonged rotation and places the lumbar spine in extension, both of which create compressive stress throughout the night.

7. Stretch Your Hip Flexors and Hamstrings Daily

Chronically tight hip flexors (nearly universal in people who sit for work) tilt the pelvis forward and create an exaggerated lumbar curve that compresses the posterior elements of the spine continuously. Tight hamstrings pull the pelvis into posterior tilt, which flattens the lumbar curve and increases disc stress at the lower segments. A daily stretching routine targeting both muscle groups is one of the most direct ways to reduce the cumulative mechanical load on your lumbar spine. Even five to ten minutes daily produces measurable improvements in flexibility and postural alignment over several weeks.

8. Maintain a Healthy Body Weight

Every additional pound of body weight carried in the abdomen translates into several additional pounds of compressive force on the lumbar discs at L4-L5 and L5-S1, the segments most commonly involved in disc herniation and degeneration. Maintaining a healthy weight through a combination of regular movement and anti-inflammatory nutrition is not just a cardiovascular health issue. It is a direct spinal load management strategy. Our patients who achieve and maintain a healthy weight consistently report reductions in chronic back pain and their imaging often reflects improved disc health over time.

9. Set Up an Ergonomic Workstation

For the majority of our San Diego patients who work at a desk, the workstation is where most spinal damage accumulates. Monitor height, chair height, keyboard position, and desk depth all interact to either support or undermine your spinal alignment for hours each day. Your monitor should be at eye level so your head stays level, not tilted forward or down. Your elbows should rest at roughly 90 degrees. Your lower back should have contact with lumbar support. If your current setup does not meet these criteria, it is worth investing some time to adjust it. The compounding effect over years of work is significant.

10. Schedule Regular Chiropractic Evaluations

The spine does not give obvious warning signs until problems are already well established. Misalignments develop gradually, disc degeneration begins silently, and postural distortions accumulate over years before they become symptomatic. Regular chiropractic evaluations allow us to identify and address these issues before they progress into acute episodes or chronic conditions. Think of it the same way you think about dental cleanings or annual physicals: maintenance care is exponentially more effective and less costly than crisis care. At Intouch Chiropractic, we offer both NUCCA Chiropractic and Spinal Decompression Therapy to support long-term spinal health at every stage.

Signs Your Spine Needs Professional Attention

Daily habits are powerful preventive tools, but they are not a substitute for professional care when damage has already occurred. Watch for these warning signs:

Persistent lower back or neck pain lasting more than two to three weeks

Pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates into the arms or legs

Morning stiffness that takes more than 30 minutes to resolve

Pain that worsens consistently with sitting, standing, or bending

A history of disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, or sciatica with recurring symptoms

Postural changes you can see — one shoulder higher than the other, a forward head position, or an uneven gait

These are not signs to manage on your own with stretching and hope. They are signals that the underlying structure needs to be evaluated by a professional who can identify what is actually happening in your spine and address it at the source.

How We Support Long-Term Spine Health in San Diego, California

At Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego’s Mission Valley, our approach to long-term spinal health combines three evidence-based therapies that address different layers of the problem.

NUCCA chiropractic care restores the precise alignment of the upper cervical spine, which has a cascading effect on the alignment of the entire spinal column. When the atlas is misaligned, compensatory patterns develop all the way down to the lumbar spine. This means the low back problems many patients come to us with actually originate at the neck.

For patients with existing disc damage, our DRX9000 Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression creates the negative intradiscal pressure needed to retract herniated disc material, restore disc height, and rehydrate degenerated discs. This provides a structural reset that allows the daily habits above to actually maintain the gains.

We also offer MLS laser therapy to reduce inflammation and accelerate soft tissue healing throughout the spine.

Together, these tools give your spine the best possible foundation for long-term health.

Frequently Asked Questions About Daily Habits for Spinal Health

How long does it take for these habits to make a noticeable difference?

Most patients report noticeable improvements in pain levels and energy within two to four weeks of consistently practicing these habits. Structural changes, such as improved posture and increased flexibility, typically become visible within six to twelve weeks. The long-term benefits to disc health and spinal alignment accumulate over months and years of consistent practice.

Can these habits prevent disc herniation?

Yes, in many cases. Disc herniation most commonly results from a combination of chronic compressive loading, dehydration, and a single mechanical stress event, like a poor lift. Building the habits above reduces all three risk factors simultaneously. While no habit can guarantee complete prevention, patients who follow these guidelines consistently face significantly lower risk of both initial herniation and recurrence.

Is chiropractic care safe for long-term maintenance?

Yes. NUCCA chiropractic care in particular is one of the gentlest forms of spinal adjustment available. Unlike traditional manual manipulation, NUCCA uses extremely light, precise corrections at the upper cervical spine with no twisting or cracking. Many of our patients have been under maintenance NUCCA care for years and report consistent improvements in overall well-being, pain levels, and quality of life.

What if I already have degenerative disc disease… is it too late for these habits to help?

It is never too late to improve spinal health. Disc degeneration is a progressive condition, but its progression is not inevitable. The same habits that prevent degeneration also slow its advancement and, in combination with professional treatment like spinal decompression, can actually support structural improvement. Patients with established degenerative disc disease who adopt these habits consistently report meaningful reductions in pain and significant improvements in function.

“I can’t say enough great things about Intouch Chiropractic. From weekend warriors to full-time competitors, chiropractic care for athletes offers a holistic, drug-free approach to healing and performance enhancement that can help you get back in the game faster than ever.

At our chiropractic office in San Diego, CA, we regularly see athletes of every skill level with a wide range of injuries. We love working with athletes, because by nature they are determined and eager to do the work necessary to get back to their sport!

The majority of athletes put their bodies through tough workouts. For this reason alone, it is critical for athletes to keep their bodies in top shape to prevent sports injuries. According to a study in The Journal of Chiropractic Research and Clinical Investigation, 30% of athletes showed increased athletic performance when tested on balance, reaction time, and agility after 12 weeks of chiropractic care. Plus, chiropractic care has also been shown to improve coordination and speed in athletes.

In this blog post, we’ll get into more detail on chiropractic care for athletic injuries, including the benefits of such therapy and the types of injuries we regularly see at Intouch Chiropractic.

Why Athletes Choose Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is rooted in the understanding that optimal musculoskeletal and nervous system function is essential for peak performance. Expert chiropractors, like the team at Intouch, are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat neuromusculoskeletal disorders—issues that commonly affect athletes, such as muscle strains, joint sprains, and back pain.

By focusing on spinal alignment and joint health, our chiropractic care helps restore balance, reduce pain, and improve mobility, all of which are crucial for athletic recovery and performance.

More and more professional athletes are chiropractic patients because they realize that it helps them maximize their athletic performance. Major newspapers and magazine articles feature Arnold Schwartzeneger, former boxing champ Evander Holyfield, and football stars such as Emmit Smith, Joe Montana and Aaron Rodgers proclaiming the benefits of chiropractic care and the impact that it has had on their careers.

Our own Dr. Devin Young is proud to be the chiropractor for many runners, including Boston Marathon Champion, Meb Keflezighi. In fact, it is not uncommon for professional and college teams to have a team chiropractic on the sidelines.

Some of the benefits of a chiropractic care for athletes are:

Improved performance

Greater endurace

Increased range of motion

Faster recovery timee

Improved blood flow

Decreased risk of injury

Better posture

Decreased joint pain

Better flexibility

Greater focus and concentration

Improved immune function

The cumulative effects of consistent, small stresses over years can result in the same type of trauma that a severe sudden stress can. The great majority of sports injuries are not spinal injuries, but musculoskeletal injuries such as sprains, strains and stress fractures.

On the other hand, acute trauma such as fractures, dislocations or complete ligament tears are also possible. Although injury prevention and conditioning is important, they are often overlooked over the spirit of winning. While this seems illogical, the human drive to win many times becomes a priority instead of taking care of yourself.

San Diego chiropractor Dr. Devin Young and Meb Keflezighi at the NYC Marathon

Let us help you be proactive in maintaining your health and treating injuries to keep you at peak performance!

Next, let’s cover some of the common treatments we recommend to the patients we see who make participating in sports a major part of their life.

Chiropractic Therapies Offered at Intouch Chiropractic for Athletes

At Intouch Chiropractic, we offer a wide range of chiropractic therapies that can help you heal and recover. The main therapies we offer (and that we have seen many athletes utilize in the past), include:

NUCCA Chiropractic

Spinal Decompression

Laser Therapy

MLS Laser Therapy

Shockwave Therapy

The approach we take with you is highly dependent on your needs. No two athletes are the same! We will work with you to develop a plan that best fits your needs.

“Intouch Chiropractic is truly the best. They have helped our entire family and we have referred many of our friends to them. They too have been greatly helped. Going to Intouch has been life changing. Both doctors are caring, knowledgeable, and helpful. The staff there is very kind and friendly also! I really can’t say enough good about them!!” – Intouch Chiropractic Review by Debra S.

The Chiropractic Approach to Sports Injuries

The chiropractic approach to sports injuries is getting treatment as quickly as possible, and not waiting for it to just go away on its own. It rarely does!

Chiropractic care gives an athlete an edge over their competition; allowing a higher level of function and performance and decreased risk of injury- it’s Meb Keflezighi’s secret!

So what are you waiting for? Coming in both adjustable and static styles, standing desks offer tons of benefits.

In this blog post, we’ll look at the six main benefits associated with a standing desk.

The 6 Main Benefits of Switching to a Standing Desk

Have you been considering making the move to a standing desk, but not sure if the benefits outweigh the cost?

To help you make the move to a healthier choice, here are the top six benefits of a standing desk.

1. A Standing Desk Can Reduce Back Pain & Strain

You’ve likely dealt with back pain at some point in your life. In fact, back pain or strain is an issue that nearly 80% of adults will experience at some point in their lives.

Those who suffer from occasional or chronic back pain will often make the choice to purchase a big, comfortable office chair to help reduce their strain. Unfortunately, today’s modern office chairs may be doing more harm than good for your back pain.

Studies continue to show that switching to standing desks can help reduce the amount of strain on backs. One particular 2011 study – known as the “Take-a-Stand Project” – reported that those who stood while they worked for at least an hour each day saw a 54% reduction in their upper back and neck pain.

Now imagine what would be possible if you invested that same amount of time – or more – each day with a high-quality standing desk!

2. Standing Desks May Decrease the Risk of Heart Disease

Not only has science studied the impacts of standing while working on your back, but research has shown that standing can improve your heart health! In fact, these studies have decades of science at their disposal.

A study printed in the 1958 British Medical Journal surveyed bus company employees about the impacts of sitting and standing while on the job. The study found that those who were seated while driving for the majority of the day experienced a risk of developing heart disease twice as often as those that stood more often for their job.

The findings have held true. Continued research has continued to report that workers who lead a daily sedentary lifestyle are more likely to have heart and cardiovascular health issues. Yet, with a simple change in daily activity, that risk can be greatly reduced.

3. Standing Desks Are Great for Weight Loss & Management

Standing desks are also great for those who are looking for an easy addition to their weight management or weight loss program. When standing and working, your body is more fully engaged in physical activity, which means you are actively burning calories.

In some cases, you may find that you will burn nearly 50 extra calories each hour that you stand and work. At that rate, it’s easy to see how you can potentially burn nearly 750 extra calories each week!

Over an entire working year, switching to a standing desk could help increase your activity levels and burn nearly 30,000 extra calories. The numbers add up, as that is close to the equivalent of running ten marathons in a single year.

All that activity for simply switching to a standing desk? The health benefits are totally worth it!

4. A Standing Desk Can Improve Your Mood

A major issue facing office employees is the rising rates of anxiety and depression. While there are many factors to consider when looking at mental health, one aspect that many agree on is the overall feeling of “blah” that comes from being seated all day.

Increased sedentary working days have shown to contribute to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental struggles. The same “Take-a-Stand Project” reported that of those interviewed, individuals who switched out their seated workspace with a standing desk said that they were happier, healthier, and felt less stressed at their workplace.

Ensuring that employees are cared for in both their physical and mental state can offer plenty of benefits for an organization. Giving the option to office workers to have standing desks can be a great investment in your team’s moods, health, and satisfaction!

5. Standing Desks Are Great Energy Boosters

Not only can a standing desk bring a boost to mood, but they are a great way to increase your overall energy.

It’s hard to imagine, but you can actually get worn out from sitting all day; similar to how you feel after a day-long car trip! When you sit at a desk all day, your body’s blood sugar plummets. Low blood sugar may have you reaching for a sugary snack which only deepens the feeling of exhaustion.

With a standing desk, you will keep your mind and body engaged in your current activities. This will in turn help you brain to stay “switched on,” and your energy levels will remain high during times when you usually dip into a tired state.

6. Use a Standing Desk to Boost Your Productivity

Finally, there is nothing more important in the workplace than feeling accomplished and effective. If you are looking for a way to increase your productivity, a great way to hack your workplace is with a standing desk!

Whether you find yourself answering emails, making phone calls, or hosting video chats, standing up while you work will help you increase your productivity. The feeling of standing helps to hone in your mind and body to whatever you are focusing on, which will keep you awake and alert. Combine this with your overall increased health and mood, and you will start to see your daily work improve in efficiency and effectiveness.

Not bad for a simple switch to standing!

“Best team and office. NUCCA improved the quality of my life in a matter of weeks. I hope NUCCA becomes the standard for non-invasive cervical spine intervention. These are the best people to go to.” – Intouch Chiropractic Review by Meg S.

Take a Stand With Intouch Chiropractic

At Intouch Chiropractic, our commitment to our patients is to provide the latest and most impactful information related to your overall health and well-being. All of this time spent sleeping can have a major impact on our health, including the health of our spines.

Have you ever gone to bed feeling fine only to wake up and feel like your back or neck hurt? If you have, you may be sleeping in positions that are unhealthy for your neck and back.

A proper sleeping position is super important for your spinal health. Two of the most important pieces to quality sleep are having a high-quality pillow and a mattress that supports your back.

But one of the most underrated and important aspect of sleeping for spinal health is simply the position in which you sleep.

In this blog post, we’ll cover various common sleeping positions and how each may impact the health of your spine.

How Sleeping Positions Affect Spinal Health

First, let’s start with one of the healthiest positions for sleeping and spinal health.

Is sleeping on my back good for my spine?

Yes, sleeping on your back is one of the best ways to sleep for spine health, as long as you have proper support for your head and neck. Sleeping on your back is the best option for many people as this sleeping position allows your spine, head, and neck to relax in a neutral position.

For your cervical curve to be supported, it is crucial to not have your head elevated too high or too low. Don’t sleep on a stack of pillows or a flat pillow.

The best pillow for everyone is one that fully supports your head and neck in a neutral position. However, too many pillows put your chin toward your chest. This puts extra stress on your neck.

Our patients at Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego always ask us for pillow recommendations and ourr answer is always the same:

For proper spinal health while you sleep, choose a pillow that supports your neck in a neutral position; not too puffy or too flat.

If your lower back hurts when sleeping on your back, you can use a small pillow as support under your knees. For those who are suffering from neck pain or back pain and can’t figure out why, try sleeping on your back for a few nights to see if that helps!

Is side sleeping good for my back?

Sleeping on your side is a good choice for your spine’s health. Plus, you’re less likely to snore in this position as it keeps your airways open. This makes it the best position for people with sleep problems such as sleep apnea.

Although side sleeping is a great sleeping posture, avoid having your arm straight above your head to avoid potential shoulder pain. Feel free to bend your knees or use a small pillow between your legs to avoid low back and hip problems.

For pregnant women, side sleeping is the best option. Sleep on your left side while pregnant to improve circulation to your body and to your baby, inhibiting your uterus from pressing against your liver, which is on your right side.

Is it okay to sleep on my stomach?

No, sleeping on your stomach is horrible for spinal health. Never sleep on your stomach, and we mean NEVER!

Although it prevents snoring, sleeping on your stomach is detrimental for everything else, including your spine and neck.

When you sleep on your stomach, you must turn your head to be able to breathe. This puts a 90-degree kink in your neck for hours and forces you to arch your low back.

Plus, this position puts a ton of pressure on your neck muscles and joints, possibly leading to numbness, tingling, aches, and irritated nerves. Sleeping on your stomach also can affect how long you hold your adjustments.

Regularly at Intouch Chiropractic, we see patients who are suffering from back or neck pain that is completely attributable to sleeping on their stomach for years and years. Avoid this sleep posture!

A patient uses the DRX9000 to perform non-surgical spinal decompression for lower back pain at Intouch Chiropractic

Getting Sleep that is Healthy for Necks and Backs

Set yourself up for success by doing the following:

Invest in a great mattress

Invest in the right pillow

Get chiropractic care to keep yourself healthy

Here’s to a good night’s sleep!

If you are suffering from neck or back pain as a result of your sleep, schedule a consultation today. Waking up with neck pain can be extremely frustrating and demoralizing.

One of the first things to consider when you wake up with neck pain is your sleeping position and its impact on your spine.

But another major factor contributing to chronic neck pain could actually be your pillow.

In this post, Dr. Jeanett Tapia, an expert chiropractor at Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, will cover a few recommendations for how to choose the right pillow if you are experiencing neck pain as a result of sleep.

Choosing the Best Pillow to Avoid Neck Pain

It’s tough to figure out which is the best pillow to relieve chronic neck pain. With many factors to take into consideration, I did my own research to find the best solutions for you.

A good night’s sleep can be evasive with the wrong pillow. Even if you manage to fall asleep, sometimes you are woken up by the pain without the proper support.

My best advice is that you choose a pillow that keeps your spine in a natural and neutral position throughout the night. You never want your neck bent in any direction: head forward, head back, or tilted.

Figuring out which type of pillow is best for you starts with knowing your sleep positions.

Are you a back sleeper, side sleeper, or stomach sleeper?

The Right Pillow for Each Sleeping Position

In this section, we’ll make pillow recommendations for each sleeping type.

Do You Sleep on Your Stomach?

Some experts state that sleep positions don’t matter if you have the right pillow. True…for the most part…except stomach sleeping.

As head and neck doctors, we never recommend stomach sleeping. We have found over the years that sleeping on your stomach is one of the most detrimental things you can do to your head, neck and spine.

Consider it a micro-trauma. Over and over again, night after night, you torque your neck when you sleep on your stomach. This puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the upper neck potentially creating health problems.

Plus, you don’t hold your chiropractic adjustments as well when you sleep on your stomach making it difficult to stay in alignment. Similar findings have been reported to us by the many patients we see at Intouch Chiropractic.

Stomach sleepers must turn their head to one side to be able to breathe. Over time, this stresses the neck muscles, causing chronic neck pain and stiffness. It’s a hard habit to break it, but your health is worth it.

So, instead of making a pillow recommendation for stomach sleepers, here is another recommendation: stop sleeping on your stomach!

Do You Sleep on Your Side?

Side sleeping is much healthier for your spine than stomach sleeping. The main factor to keep in mind when choosing a pillow for side sleeping is pillow height. Pillow height is absolutely critical for side sleepers.

It’s important that your spine remain in a neutral position and that your head isn’t kinked to one side. If your pillow is too thin, your head collapses and doesn’t have enough support and kinks your neck towards the mattress. Over time, this can cause chronic neck pain.

Or your pillow can be too thick and provide too much support. If your pillow is too thick, your head is kinked away from the mattress and can also cause chronic neck and back pain.

Neither option is good for spinal health. Having the appropriate height pillow is very important in order to keep your head and neck in a neutral position.

Continue to the final section below to see the exact pillow recommendation I make for side sleepers.

Do You Sleep on Your Back?

Sleeping on your back is the healthiest position for your spine. Like side sleeping, the pillow thickness for people who sleep on their back is very important.

This sleeping position requires the most flat type of pillow. Make sure your shoulders are not on your pillow, as this may jam your shoulder joints. Make sure you don’t sleep on a thick pillow or a stack of pillows, as this puts unnecessary pressure on your neck all night long.

Down pillows work for most people sleeping on their back, as the feathers naturally flatten. However, as soon as you turn on your side, down pillows tend to be too flat and provide zero support for side sleeping.

Over the years I have found that for patients with degenerative changes in their neck, down pillows do not provide sufficient support, and an orthopedic pillow is best.

Finally, let’s close the post by covering a pillow recommendation that accommodates most sleeping types and helps to prevent neck pain as a result of sleeping poorly.

Dr. Jeanett Tapia’s Best Pillow Recommendation for Neck Pain

I happen to have a very sensitive neck. So… I have personally tested dozens upon dozens of pillows. Cheap, expensive, foam, feathers, polyester… you name it. There’s been much trial and error.

At one point I even started developing rotator cuff issues because of my choice of pillow. I switched to a down pillow for a couple of months, and my body screamed at me. It sounds extreme… and it was… and very painful… but, it’s 100% true.

I have degenerative changes from old whiplash injuries, and honestly don’t know where I would be without the type of care that we offer at Intouch Chiropractic.

However, we spend many hours in bed, day after day, and having the proper support for those hours is critical. So, I decided to take the advice of many upper cervical doctors and try out the Therapeutica pillow recently.

When I first started using it, I woke up often. I didn’t like that part. Palmer is a name that any professional in the practice of chiropractic should know. That’s because D.D. Palmer is chiropractic’s founder!

In this post, we’ll share a bit about who D.D. Palmer was and his importance today for chiropractors across the world, including the expert team at Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego.

First, let’s talk about the early days of D.D. PalmerD.D. Palmer.

D.D. Palmer, the Early Years

As mentioned above, D.D. Palmer is Chiropractic’s founder.

But who was D.D. Palmer?

Daniel David Palmer began practicing “magnetic healing” in Davenport, Iowa in 1886. Magnetic healing was a common healing therapy at that time. This therapy was a cross between meridian therapy based on the concepts of Chinese medicine and massage.

D.D. Palmer innovated the practice. He applied what he learned about new developments in physiology and anatomy, and resolved inflammation of the nerves and created remedies for his patients.

As D.D. Palmer worked with patients, he began exploring what we call today, “chiropractic adjustments”.

But before we get into the first chiropractic adjustment ever made, let’s rewind a few thousand years to provide some context.

Let’s quickly talk about the ancient Greek, Hippocrates.

“Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.” -Hippocrates

Hippocrates, Health and the Spine

Over 2500 years before D.D. Palmer and the invention of chiropractic practices, Hippocrates discovered the link between the body and the brain and called it the nervous system.

Through his work, Hippocrates removed what he called ‘lesions’ from the spinal column and noted that illnesses cleared up faster. Those who came to him feeling sick, got well, and were sick much less often.

Through the years, this type of treatment of the spine was crude and misunderstood, and many cultures have been known to have ‘bone setters’ as healers.

Now, let’s fast forward back to the subject of our story, D.D. Palmer, and the first chiropractic adjustment.

The First Chiropractic Adjustment by D.D. Palmer

Palmer believed that the body had an ample supply of natural healing power that transmitted through the nervous system. Take the story of Harvey Lillard as an example.

D.D. Palmer and Harvey Lillard

Harvey Lillard, the janitor of Palmer’s building, had lost his hearing 17 years earlier. Lillard communicated to him that he had felt something “pop” in his back when he was in a stooped position while exerting himself, and immediately lost his hearing.

Palmer believed that there was a connection between the two events.

When Palmer examined Lillard, he discovered a “lump in his back.” Palmer speculated that the dislocated atlas vertebra was somehow blocking the spinal nerves innervating the inner ear.

He theorized that if he put the vertebra back in place, the nerve pathways would reopen.

On September 18, 1895, Palmer applied a firm pressure with his hands to Lillard’s spine in an attempt to align the vertebra. Palmer was successful and Lillard recovered his hearing.

That is to say, the first chiropractic adjustment was made.

Chiropractic: Done By Hand

The word “chiropractic” was created by Palmer’s patient and friend, Reverend Samuel Weed. He combined the Greek words cheiro (hand) and praktikos (practical or do), formulating the term chiropractic, which translates to “done by hand.”

Although many chiropractors use tools or instruments in today’s society, the majority of chiropractors– including D.D.’s son BJ Palmer, continue to follow the tradition of adjusting by hand only.

At Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, California, our team of expert chiropractors will use whatever means necessary to help you recover and heal! Schedule a consultation today if you would like to come in for a visit, or learn what our chiropractors treat and how our chiropractors can help.

The post Highlighting D.D. This crucial structure not only supports the weight of your head but also plays a pivotal role in protecting the brainstem and facilitating proper communication between your brain and body.

NUCCA chiropractic doctors, specialists in a highly precise chiropractic technique, are often referred to as “Atlas Doctors” for their focus on this important area of the spine.

At Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, California, our expert team of doctors are trained and skilled in the NUCCA approach to chiropractic care. They regularly perform atlas adjustments that have many positive benefits.

In this blog post, we’ll explore some of those NUCCA atlas adjustment benefits that we see in patients who suffer from things like chronic back pain, neck pain and more.

First, let’s get started with a basic anatomy lesson and point out where the atlas is in the upper cervical spine.

Quick Anatomy Lesson: About the ‘Atlas’

So, what is the atlas and where in the spine is it?

The atlas can be found in the upper neck. This cervical vertebra is uniquely positioned at the junction between your head and spine. Its alignment affects not only the surrounding bones and muscles but also the delicate brainstem, which passes through it.

A misaligned atlas can disrupt the central nervous system, leading to a range of health issues. Some of the health issues we see in patients who are suffering from a misaligned atlas include chronic pain and even reduced organ function.

Correcting this misalignment is key to unlocking the body’s natural ability to heal and function optimally.

Why is the atlas so important?

The atlas is an extremely important part of the spine. Consider this…

The human brain weighs approximately 3 pounds due its high water content. In all, an adult head weighs around 10 to 15 pounds (skull, eyes, teeth, facial muscles, cartilage and skin).

Some estimations put the weight of the head up to 17 pounds!

And all of that weight sits directly atop the atlas, making it one of the most important parts of the entire spine. It is essential that the spine has proper alignment, and this often starts with the atlas.

Fun fact: the atlas is named after the Atlas of Greek mythology, a god who was condemned to forever hold up the entire weight of the heavens.

5 Main Benefits of a NUCCA Adjustment on the Atlas

There are many benefits our San Diego patients have reported as a result of this type of chiropractic treatment. Here are five of the most common positive health outcomes we see in our patients:

Improved Nervous System Function The atlas protects the brainstem, which controls essential functions like breathing, heart rate, and digestion. When the atlas is misaligned, it can compress the brainstem and disrupt the nervous system. Realignment helps restore proper communication between the brain and body, improving brain stem function and overall health.

Relief from Pain and Discomfort NUCCA adjustments have been shown to alleviate neck pain, headaches, migraines, and even lower back pain by addressing the root cause: misalignment in the upper cervical spine.

Better Posture An atlas misalignment often causes compensatory changes throughout the body, leading to poor posture. Correcting the alignment helps balance the head, neck, and shoulders, reducing strain on muscles and joints.

Reduction in Chronic Conditions NUCCA adjustments have been associated with improvements in conditions like vertigo, TMJ dysfunction, fibromyalgia, and more. By addressing the underlying spinal misalignment, patients often experience relief from symptoms that traditional treatments may not resolve.

Non-Invasive and Drug-Free For those seeking a natural approach to health, NUCCA adjustments are a gentle and effective alternative to medications or surgical interventions.

“I’ve absolutely loved my experience switching from my standard chiropractic to NUCCA. It has really helped with my assorted issues. I love my doctors, they really know what they are doing and I feel personally cared for. And the office staff gals are the best! Super friendly and fun and I really feel at home here in this practice. Not going anywhere!” – Intouch Chiropractic NUCCA Adjustment Review from Susie S.

NUCCA Adjustments and the Atlas in Conclusion

As you can see, there are many reasons to consider a NUCCA chiropractic adjustment if you are having chronic neck or back pain. While many seek orthodontic treatments like braces to address TMJ symptoms, it’s essential to understand that these methods may not always provide relief and can even exacerbate the condition.

If you’ve suffered with TMJ for an extended period of time, you may have found yourself wondering if chiropractic treatment can help TMJ.

In this easy-to-read blog post, we’ll explore TMJ, its symptoms, and how chiropractic care techniques can offer TMJ relief. We’ll also explain why orthodontics and braces may not be the ideal solution for everyone and why seeking chiropractor help with TMJ makes sense.

Understanding TMJ and Its Symptoms

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. TMJ disorder, often referred to as TMD, occurs when this joint becomes dysfunctional, leading to a range of symptoms. TMJ/TMD symptoms can include:

Jaw Pain: Aching or throbbing pain in the jaw, especially when chewing or talking.

Facial Pain: Discomfort or tenderness in the face, including around the ears.

Headaches: Frequent headaches, often resembling tension headaches or migraines.

Clicking or Popping: Audible clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when moving the jaw.

Limited Jaw Mobility: Difficulty or discomfort while opening the mouth wide or during jaw movement.

Ear Problems: Earaches, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or a feeling of fullness in the ears.

Neck and Shoulder Pain: Pain or stiffness in the neck and shoulders, often associated with muscle tension.

Now that we understand TMJ a little better, let’s get into one of the most common treatments: orthodontics.

Orthodontics and TMJ

Orthodontic treatments like braces are commonly recommended to address various dental and jaw issues, including misaligned teeth and bite problems.

However, for some individuals with TMJ, orthodontics may not provide the expected relief and can even worsen symptoms.

Here’s why orthodontics are not always the right answer for people suffering from TMJ disorder:

Misdiagnosis: TMJ symptoms can mimic other dental issues, leading to a misdiagnosis. Orthodontic treatments may focus on correcting dental misalignment, not addressing the underlying TMJ dysfunction.

Jaw Strain: Traditional braces can exert significant pressure on the jaw, which can exacerbate TMJ pain and discomfort.

Incorrect Bite Alignment: In some cases, orthodontic treatments can inadvertently worsen bite alignment, causing additional stress on the TMJ.

Delayed Diagnosis: TMJ disorder may not be recognized until orthodontic treatment is underway, making it challenging to adjust the treatment plan.

If you’ve tried orthodontics to deal with your TMJ jaw pain and have found no relief, the following sections will explain why chiropractic treatments may be the answer you are seeking.

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-425" src="https://sandiegonucca.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tmjd-jaw-pain-intouch-chiropractic-san-diego-ca-scaled-e1620842199894.webp" alt="Wooden letters spell "TMJ" in front of the jaw of a skeleton model" width="800" height="533" srcset="https://sandiegonucca.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tmjd-jaw-pain-intouch-chiropractic-san-diego-ca-scaled-e1620842199894.webp 800w, https://sandiegonucca.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tmjd-jaw-pain-intouch-chiropractic-san-diego-ca-scaled-e1620842199894-300x200.webp 300w, https://sandiegonucca.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/tmjd-jaw-pain-intouch-chiropractic-san-diego-ca-scaled-e1620842199894-768x512.webp 768w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" />Chiropractic Care for TMJ Relief

Chiropractic care offers a non-invasive, holistic approach to addressing TMJ symptoms by focusing on the alignment of the spine, particularly the cervical spine and jaw. Chiropractors who specialize in TMJ disorders can provide several benefits:

Precise Evaluation: NUCCA chiropractors conduct thorough assessments to determine the source of TMJ pain and dysfunction.

Gentle Adjustments: NUCCA chiropractic adjustments for TMJ are precise and gentle, aimed at restoring proper head and neck alignment thus reducing pressure on the jaw joint.

Muscle Relaxation: NUCCA chiropractors can use various techniques to relax tense muscles in the jaw, neck, and shoulders, alleviating pain, and tension.

Improved Jaw Mobility: NUCCA chiropractic care can enhance jaw mobility and reduce jaw locking, allowing for more comfortable movements.

Holistic Approach: NUCCA chiropractors consider the interconnectedness of the body, addressing not only the jaw but also the spine, nervous system, and overall health.

Customized Treatment Plans: Each patient’s TMJ condition is unique, and our chiropractors create personalized treatment plans to suit your individual needs and goals.

As you can see, there are many benefits to seeking a TMJ chiropractor. Next, let’s cover why sometimes chiropractic therapy can actually be a better solution for someone than orthodontics.

“I had been dealing with debilitating TMJ popping, pain, and locking for years. I thought that surgery would end up being the only solution to give me better jaw function and better quality of life back. I’m so glad I took a leap of faith and made a consultation with Intouch chiropractic. I am about 1 month into my treatment plan and already feel significantly better. I have been smiling wider, have been able to make more facial expressions without being in pain, and have been able to enjoy eating and speaking without the constant locking. I feel very comfortable working with both Dr Tapia and Dr Young as they do subtle but effective adjustments without the scary popping and cracking. I have never had a greater appreciation for holistic care than I do now. I really like the incorporation of red light therapy, too, to help with inflammation. Valerie, the red light therapy technician, and Carolina, who helps organize appointments and patient care are very sweet and helpful, too.” – Intouch Chiropractic TMJ Care Review from Poppy B.

Why Chiropractic Care Is a Better Choice for Many TMJ Patients

While orthodontics can be effective for certain dental issues, TMJ is often related to the alignment of the jaw and cervical spine.

Chiropractic care can provide several advantages for TMJ sufferers over traditional orthodontics:

Non-Invasive: Chiropractic treatments do not require braces or other dental appliances.

Targeted Approach: Chiropractors focus on addressing the root cause of TMJ symptoms by restoring proper head, neck, and jaw alignment. This alone can alleviate many TMJ symptoms for many TMJD sufferers.

Natural Relief: Chiropractic care offers a natural way to alleviate TMJ pain without the need for surgery or medications.

Personalized Care: Our chiropractors tailor their treatment plans to each patient’s specific needs, ensuring effective and lasting relief.

Holistic Wellness: Chiropractic care promotes overall wellness by optimizing spinal and nervous system function, which can benefit not only TMJ but also other aspects of health.

TMJ Relief Is Possible

TMJ can be a challenging condition to live with, causing pain and discomfort in your daily life. While orthodontic treatments like braces are effective for many dental issues, they are not the best solution for many TMJ sufferers and can even worsen symptoms in many cases, like jaw stiffness, neck pain and overall discomfort in neck and jaw muscles.

Chiropractic care for TMJ offers a gentle, non-invasive, and holistic approach to addressing TMJ symptoms by focusing on spinal and jaw alignment. If you’re experiencing TMJ discomfort, consult with our chiropractors. They specialize in TMJ disorders and help many patients get TMJ relief.

Remember that everyone’s TMJ condition is unique, so it’s crucial to seek a healthcare provider who can provide personalized care and help you find the most effective solution for your specific needs. When this happens, you may experience loss of movement or function, or even chronic pain, because signals can get crossed between the body and brain.

This condition can steadily get worse over time if not properly diagnosed and treated. Your spine can slowly shift due to repetitive movements or bad posture. A traumatic event may also throw your spine out of its natural alignment.

Continue reading to learn more about not only the causes of spine subluxation but the different categories used to describe it and the most effective ways to treat it.

And if you live in the San Diego area and need spine subluxation treatment, Intouch Chiropractic can help! Even though each of these categories has several subcategories, let’s discuss the four broad categories and what each of them entails.

Static Intersegmental Subluxation

This first category can be detected by a chiropractor palpating along the spine, testing for mobility, and is associated with the following conditions:

Extension Malposition

Flexion Malposition

Lateral Flexion Malposition

Rotation Malposition

Anterolisthesis

Retrolisthesis

Osseous Foraminal Encroachment

Kinetic Intersegmental Subluxation

If your spine subluxation is placed in this category, your chiropractor has been able to discover movement between the normal sections of your spinal column.

Hypomobility

Hypermobility

Aberrant motion

Sectional Subluxation

Spine subluxation that is specific to one basic area of your spine falls under the sectional subluxation category. This may include when sections of your spine move in inappropriate ways or the deterioration of curved areas.

Abnormalities of motion

Decompensation of adaptational curves

Scoliosis secondary to muscle imbalance

Scoliosis secondary to structural asymmetries

Paravertebral Subluxation

Spinal subluxation in this category directly impacts the muscles that run the length of the spine. This could affect any tendons or ligaments along your spine as well.

Sacroiliac subluxation

Costovertebral dis relationships

Causes of Spine Subluxation

There are literally endless causes of spinal subluxation. Some may be caused by physical, emotional, or even chemical causes. Below are a few of the leading factors when it comes to spinal subluxation:

Trauma

While there may be various causes of spine subluxation, trauma is the most common cause. When we think of trauma, we think of a major incident such as a car accident or nasty fall. However, minor trauma from daily habits can be every bit as much of a problem.

For example, looking up at a computer screen all day or sleeping on your stomach each night can cause changes in your spine that are unhealthy, leading to spine subluxation.

Stress

We’re often told that stress is extremely harmful to our bodies and our general health. And stress certainly can play a role in causing spine subluxation. When we are experiencing large amounts of stress, we feel it in our upper back and neck. Anxiety and stress can actually cause your muscles to become tight and cause tension within your body, leading to spinal subluxations.

Chemicals

We knowingly and unknowingly expose our bodies to chemicals every day in the form of medications, processed foods, and more. These chemicals may contribute to vertebral misalignment.

For example, prescription drugs can alter your body chemistry in a negative way. There are chemicals in our food and even water that can cause our muscles to atrophy and weaken. When our body chemistry is off, the natural amount of resistance from our muscles can get out of alignment and lead to spinal misalignment.

7 Bodily Effects of Spinal Subluxation

As your tissues undergo steady and constant movements which may lead to spinal subluxation, there are several changes that can occur in the process:

Atrophy of Muscles: Atrophy occurs when a muscle partially or completely fades away or shrinks due to inactivity and other health conditions

Fibrosis: Replacement of normal tissue with scar tissue

Edema: When your body’s capillaries are damaged, excess fluid can leak and build up in your tissues leading to swelling

Congestion: Toxins develop causing trigger points in certain areas, irritating nerve endings within the muscle

Local Ischemia: Ischemia refers to a lack of blood flow in a muscle, often stemming from a muscle spasm, causing severe muscle pain

Hyperemia: Hyperemia refers to the excess of blood in a specific area of the body, preventing the blood to flow in a natural way

Tissue Rigidity: Adhesions form, causing rigidity in ligaments, muscles, and tendons

Next, let’s go into some of the main symptoms you might see if you are experiencing spinal subluxations.

11 Common Symptoms of Spinal Subluxations

While their severity may vary from person to person, below is a list of the 11 most common symptoms of spinal subluxation:

Headaches

Loss of balance or dizziness

Compromised immune system

Lack of energy

Neck pain

Lower back pain

Trouble sleeping at night

Asthma

TMJ

Sciatic nerve damage

Swelling

Before we get into the treatments available for spinal subluxations, let’s discuss how you can have this health issue diagnosed and treated.

Spinal Subluxation Diagnosis and Treatment

First, you’ll need to have your health concerns diagnosed. You can work with a licensed chiropractor at Intouch Chiropractic on your diagnosis, if you live in the San Diego, CA area.

Here is the process for diagnosis and treatment of this health concern, and how you can correct subluxations.

Diagnosing Spine Subluxation

If you are experiencing back pain or neck pain, it’s important that you contact an experienced chiropractor for a physical examination. Be prepared with a list of your symptoms as well as an approximate timeline documenting the history of your pain.

Consider what lifestyle changes or physical injuries may be worth mentioning to give your doctor the best chance of a proper diagnosis. A thorough exam will most likely include x-rays or MRIs.

Depending on what your doctor discovers, they may decide on a treatment plan right away or may refer you to another provide if necessary.

Treating Spine Subluxation

Spinal health treatment plans may vary depending on the severity of your condition as well as other health factors. We’ve compiled a list of the most effective treatment options for those suffering from spinal subluxation:

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractor care practitioners are experts when it comes to your neck and spine. They also aim to find the focus of neck pain or back pain rather than merely masking your chronic pain with medication. A good chiropractor can perform a number of chiropractic adjustments that can help restore your spine’s alignment and your overall health.

Diet and Exercise Changes

We consume food every day that causes inflammation throughout our bodies and makes it hard to feel good. Processed foods or other foods low in nutritional value can also make it hard for our bodies to function as they should. Focusing on eating whole food and avoiding ultra-processed and sugary foods can contribute to overall wellness. Drinking plenty of water is also a factor in a healthier lifestyle.

When your muscles are strong, it helps keep your spine in proper alignment. Finding a fitness routine that incorporates both strength and cardio training will not only build muscle tone but improve your posture and aid in your healing process.

But remember that it’s not smart to jump into a routine that is too intense or unsustainable. Start small and work your way up as your stamina increases.

Physical Therapy & Massage Therapy

Your chiropractor may assign you simple movements or exercises you can do at home to improve your posture and strengthen your core muscles. Massage therapy may also be recommended and is an excellent way to increase blood circulation which promotes healing.

Mental Health Awareness

Along with focusing on your physical health, your mental health shouldn’t be ignored. As mentioned earlier, keeping your stress levels down is extremely important.

Find some stress-relieving activities such as meditating, yoga, walking, or painting that bring you joy. Additionally, speaking with a counselor is one of the most effective ways to stay mentally strong.

“Dr. Tapia, Dr. Young and staff are incredibly compassionate, professional and prompt. Most importantly, I have achieved a great deal of relief in my neck and my back with their treatment protocols.” – Intouch Chiropractic Review from Marie S.

What is Spine Subluxation in Conclusion

Spine subluxation is a term that describes a joint that doesn’t work properly, whether it’s not functioning as it should or is out of alignment. The fundamental principle of chiropractic is that the body has an innate ability to heal and maintain itself when the nervous system is functioning optimally. Chiropractors believe that misalignments or subluxations in the spine can interfere with the nervous system’s ability to transmit signals, leading to various health issues.

By gently adjusting the spine and other joints, chiropractors aim to restore proper alignment and improve the body’s overall function. This approach is based on the understanding that the human body is a complex, interconnected system, where the musculoskeletal, nervous, and other systems work together to maintain health and well-being. Chiropractors view the body as a whole, rather than treating individual symptoms in isolation.

The goal of chiropractic care is to address the root cause of a problem, rather than just treating the symptoms. Chiropractors use a variety of techniques, including spinal adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and lifestyle recommendations, to help patients achieve optimal health and prevent future issues. By addressing the underlying cause of a problem, chiropractic care can provide long-lasting relief and promote overall wellness.

Common misconceptions about chiropractic care

Despite the growing popularity of chiropractic care, there are still many misconceptions and myths surrounding this healthcare approach. One common misconception is that chiropractic care is only for back and neck pain. While it is true that chiropractic care can be highly effective in treating these conditions, it can also address a wide range of other health issues, including headaches, migraines, joint pain, and even some chronic conditions.

Another misconception is that chiropractic care is unsafe or that adjustments can be harmful. In reality, chiropractic care is a safe and well-regulated healthcare profession. Chiropractors undergo extensive training and must adhere to strict safety protocols to ensure the well-being of their patients. While there are always risks associated with any medical treatment, the risk of serious complications from chiropractic care is extremely low, especially when compared to other common medical interventions.

Some people also believe that chiropractic care is only for adults, but this is not the case. Chiropractic care can be beneficial for people of all ages, including children and infants. Chiropractors use specialized techniques and approaches to address the unique needs of different age groups, ensuring that everyone can benefit from this holistic healthcare approach.

The science behind chiropractic adjustments

Chiropractic adjustments are the cornerstone of chiropractic care, and they are based on a deep understanding of the human body’s structure and function. When the spine is misaligned or a joint is restricted, it can put pressure on the surrounding nerves, leading to a variety of health problems.

Chiropractors use specific techniques to gently realign the spine and restore proper joint function. These adjustments work by reducing the pressure on the nerves, allowing the body to function more efficiently and effectively. The process of chiropractic adjustment is based on the principle of neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to adapt and change in response to new stimuli.

When an adjustment is performed, it sends a signal to the brain, triggering a series of neurological responses. These responses can include the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain relievers, as well as the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body’s rest and digest functions. This, in turn, can lead to a reduction in pain, improved range of motion, and an overall sense of well-being.

Conditions that can be treated with chiropractic care

Chiropractic care is not limited to just back and neck pain. In fact, it can be effective in treating a wide range of health conditions, including:

Headaches and migraines: Misalignments in the spine can put pressure on the nerves, leading to tension headaches and migraines. Chiropractic adjustments can help alleviate these symptoms by reducing the pressure on the nerves.

Joint pain: Chiropractic care can be beneficial for people with joint pain, including arthritis, tendinitis, and bursitis. Adjustments can help improve joint mobility and reduce inflammation.

Sports injuries: Athletes often turn to chiropractic care to help recover from sports-related injuries, such as sprains, strains, and overuse injuries. Chiropractic adjustments can help reduce pain, improve range of motion, and facilitate the healing process.

Pregnancy-related discomfort: Pregnant women can experience a variety of discomforts, such as back pain, pelvic pain, and sciatica. Chiropractic care can help alleviate these symptoms and prepare the body for the physical demands of pregnancy and childbirth.

Pediatric conditions: Chiropractic care can also be beneficial for children, addressing issues such as colic, ear infections, and developmental delays. Chiropractors use gentle techniques to ensure the safety and comfort of their young patients.

By addressing the underlying causes of these conditions, chiropractic care can provide long-lasting relief and improve overall quality of life.

The role of nutrition and exercise in chiropractic wellness

Chiropractic care is not just about spinal adjustments; it’s a holistic approach to health and wellness that encompasses various aspects of lifestyle. Nutrition and exercise play a crucial role in supporting the body’s overall well-being and enhancing the effectiveness of chiropractic care.

Proper nutrition is essential for maintaining a healthy musculoskeletal system and supporting the body’s natural healing processes. Chiropractors often work closely with their patients to develop personalized nutrition plans that incorporate nutrient-dense foods, vitamins, and supplements. This can help reduce inflammation, promote tissue repair, and support the body’s overall function.

Similarly, regular exercise is a crucial component of chiropractic wellness. Chiropractors often recommend specific exercises and stretches that can help improve posture, strengthen the core, and enhance joint mobility. These exercises can complement the adjustments performed by the chiropractor, helping to reinforce the benefits of chiropractic care and prevent future issues.

Finding the right chiropractor for your needs

Choosing the right chiropractor is an important decision that can have a significant impact on your overall health and well-being. When selecting a chiropractor, it’s essential to consider several factors to ensure that you find the right fit for your specific needs.

First and foremost, it’s important to look for a chiropractor who is licensed and has received the proper training and education. In most countries, chiropractors are required to complete a rigorous four-year graduate-level program, including extensive clinical training. Ensure that your chiropractor is licensed and in good standing with the relevant regulatory bodies.

Additionally, it’s important to consider the chiropractor’s approach and philosophy. Some chiropractors may focus more on pain relief, while others may take a more holistic approach that addresses the underlying causes of health issues. It’s important to find a chiropractor who aligns with your personal preferences and goals for your health.

Chiropractic techniques and treatments

Chiropractors use a variety of techniques and treatments to help their patients achieve optimal health and well-being. The most well-known chiropractic technique is the spinal adjustment, which involves the gentle manipulation of the spine to restore proper alignment and improve nerve function.

However, chiropractic care goes beyond just spinal adjustments. Chiropractors may also utilize other techniques, such as:

Soft tissue therapy: This includes techniques like massage, myofascial release, and trigger point therapy, which can help reduce muscle tension and improve flexibility.

Instrument-assisted adjustments: Some chiropractors use specialized instruments to perform adjustments, which can be gentler and more precise than manual adjustments.

Rehabilitation exercises: Chiropractors may prescribe specific exercises and stretches to help strengthen the muscles and improve overall mobility.

Nutritional counseling: As mentioned earlier, chiropractors may provide guidance on optimal nutrition to support the body’s healing and recovery processes.

Lifestyle recommendations: Chiropractors may offer advice on posture, ergonomics, and other lifestyle factors that can impact overall health and well-being.

The specific treatments and techniques used by a chiropractor will depend on the individual patient’s needs and goals. A skilled chiropractor will work closely with the patient to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses their unique health concerns.

Integrating chiropractic care into your overall wellness routine

Chiropractic care is not just a standalone healthcare approach; it can be seamlessly integrated into a comprehensive wellness routine. By incorporating chiropractic care into your overall health and wellness plan, you can experience the full benefits of this holistic approach and achieve optimal well-being.

One of the key ways to integrate chiropractic care is by making it a regular part of your routine. Just as you would schedule regular check-ups with your primary care physician or dentist, it’s important to establish a consistent schedule for chiropractic visits. This can help ensure that any misalignments or restrictions are identified and addressed before they become more serious issues.

In addition to regular chiropractic visits, it’s also important to incorporate other healthy habits into your lifestyle. This can include a balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management techniques, and good sleep hygiene. By taking a holistic approach to your health and wellness, you can amplify the benefits of chiropractic care and achieve a greater sense of overall well-being.

Conclusion: Embracing the holistic approach to wellness with chiropractic care

In conclusion, chiropractic care offers a powerful and holistic approach to achieving better health and well-being. By addressing the root causes of health issues, rather than just treating the symptoms, chiropractors can help you unlock your body’s natural healing potential and enhance your overall quality of life.

Whether you’re seeking relief from pain, improved posture, or a more balanced and integrated approach to your health, chiropractic care can be a valuable addition to your wellness routine. By understanding the principles of chiropractic, dispelling common misconceptions, and exploring the science behind the techniques, you can make informed decisions about your healthcare and take an active role in your journey towards optimal wellness.

Want expert help?
