Many people searching for TMJ treatment in San Diego feel stuck between night guards, medications, and the idea of jaw surgery, yet still wake up with jaw pain, headaches, or clicking when they chew.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we take a different approach by combining precise NUCCA upper cervical chiropractic care with advanced MLS laser therapy to address both the root alignment issues in the neck and jaw and the irritated soft tissues that keep flaring up. This integrative, gentle strategy is designed for patients who want lasting relief without aggressive jaw manipulation or invasive procedures.

In this article, you will learn how TMJ problems often begin higher up in the neck, why NUCCA corrections can reduce jaw tension and improve posture, and how laser therapy supports tissue healing, calms inflammation, and eases pain in the TMJ area.

First, let’s start with the basics. What is TMJ?

What is TMJ?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, the hinge that connects your lower jaw (mandible) to your skull just in front of each ear. These paired joints work in a coordinated fashion every time you open your mouth to speak, chew, yawn, or swallow.

Each TMJ is cushioned by a small disc of cartilage and controlled by an intricate network of muscles, ligaments, and nerves that also connect deeply into your neck and upper spine.

When we talk about TMJ disorder (often called TMD or TMJD), we are describing a range of conditions that cause pain, limited motion, or abnormal sounds in one or both of these joints. Some patients hear a pop or click when they bite down, others feel a dull ache that radiates into the temple or ear, and many notice stiffness in the jaw that makes it hard to open wide.

Because the TMJ sits at the intersection of your skull, jaw, and cervical spine, problems in any of these areas can trigger or worsen jaw symptoms.

What Does TMJ Have to Do with the Neck?

The connection between your neck and your jaw is far more direct than most people realize.

Your upper cervical spine, particularly the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae, sits just below the base of your skull and acts as the foundation for your head’s position and movement. When these top vertebrae are misaligned, they can shift the balance of your entire skull, which in turn changes the way your jaw hangs and moves.

A head that tilts forward or rotates slightly to one side will force the jaw muscles to work harder on one side, creating chronic tension, uneven bite pressure, and inflammation in the TMJ.

Additionally, the nerves that supply sensation and motor control to the jaw muscles emerge from the upper cervical region and the brainstem. When the atlas or axis vertebra shifts out of proper alignment, it can irritate or compress these nerve pathways, sending pain signals to the jaw, temple, and face even when the joint itself has no structural damage.

Many of our patients at Intouch Chiropractic report that their TMJ pain began shortly after a whiplash injury, a fall, or years of poor posture that gradually tilted the head forward. These events create a domino effect where the neck misalignment becomes the hidden driver of ongoing jaw dysfunction.

Next, let’s get into our successful TMJ treatments.

How Does NUCCA Help Treat TMJ?

NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) is a specialized technique that uses precise, gentle adjustments to realign the atlas vertebra at the top of your spine. Rather than twisting or popping the neck, NUCCA practitioners rely on detailed X-rays and mathematical analysis to determine the exact angle and direction of your misalignment, then apply a controlled, low-force correction.

By restoring proper alignment to the upper cervical spine, NUCCA addresses the root biomechanical and neurological issues that often fuel TMJ pain.

Key benefits of NUCCA for TMJ treatment include:

Restores balanced skull position: When the atlas is properly aligned, the head sits evenly on top of the spine, reducing strain on jaw muscles and allowing the TMJ to function symmetrically.

Reduces nerve irritation: Correcting upper cervical misalignment takes pressure off the brainstem and nearby nerves, which can decrease referred pain to the jaw, temple, and face.

Improves posture: Many TMJ patients have forward head posture that perpetuates jaw tension. NUCCA corrections help bring the head back over the shoulders, easing the load on neck and jaw muscles.

Non-invasive and gentle: There is no forceful twisting, cracking, or manipulation of the jaw itself, making it a comfortable option for people with sensitive or inflamed TMJ.

Long-lasting results: Because NUCCA addresses the structural foundation rather than just symptoms, patients often experience sustained relief that builds over multiple sessions.

How Can Laser Therapy Improve TMJ Treatment Results?

While NUCCA chiropractic addresses the structural and neurological root causes of TMJ dysfunction, MLS (Multiwave Locked System) laser therapy provides a powerful complement by targeting the inflamed soft tissues, tight muscles, and painful trigger points around the jaw and neck.

Many of our TMJ patients come to us with chronic inflammation in the joint capsule, overworked masseter and temporalis muscles, and irritated nerves that continue to send pain signals even after alignment begins to improve.

Laser therapy accelerates healing at the cellular level, helping the body recover faster and more completely.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we use FDA-cleared MLS laser technology that delivers specific wavelengths of light deep into the tissues. This light energy stimulates mitochondria within cells to produce more ATP (energy), which speeds up tissue repair and reduces oxidative stress. The result is decreased inflammation, improved circulation, and faster resolution of muscle spasms and nerve pain.

When combined with NUCCA corrections, laser therapy ensures that the tissues surrounding the TMJ can heal and adapt to the new, healthier alignment rather than pulling the jaw back into old, dysfunctional patterns.

Key ways laser therapy enhances TMJ treatment outcomes include reducing swelling and inflammation in the joint capsule, relaxing chronically tight jaw muscles without manual manipulation, promoting faster healing of damaged ligaments and connective tissue, decreasing pain sensitivity by calming overactive nerve endings, and supporting long-term stability by helping the soft tissues adapt to corrected alignment.

Patients often notice that their jaw feels looser, chewing becomes less painful, and morning stiffness improves more quickly when laser sessions are added to their NUCCA care plan.

NUCCA and Laser Therapy for TMJ Treatment in Conclusion

TMJ treatment in San Diego does not have to mean endless nights with a mouth guard, repeated cortisone shots, or invasive surgery.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we have built a comprehensive approach that recognizes TMJ pain often starts with misalignment in the upper cervical spine.

When the atlas or axis vertebra shifts out of position, it changes the way your skull sits on your spine, forces jaw muscles to compensate unevenly, and can irritate the nerves that control jaw function. NUCCA chiropractic uses precise, gentle corrections to restore proper alignment, removing the hidden biomechanical driver of jaw dysfunction and allowing the body to heal from the inside out.

Combining NUCCA with MLS laser therapy provides a complete solution that addresses both the structural foundation and the inflamed soft tissues around the TMJ. While NUCCA realigns the atlas and relieves nerve interference, laser therapy accelerates tissue repair, reduces inflammation, relaxes tight muscles, and supports faster recovery.

Our patients often experience less jaw pain, improved range of motion, fewer headaches, and better sleep as both therapies work together.

Are you searching for TMJ treatment in San Diego, CA that is conservative and gentle? Have you bounced around between healthcare providers and still have pain and discomfort? We oftentimes meet patients that have suffered for years without getting help.

Before seeking help for TMJ, it’s important to understand exactly what TMJ is to help you get an idea if you are suffering from it.

So, what is TMJ?

What is TMJ? A Brief Description

TMJ is an acronym that stands for the “temporomandibular joint”. This joint connects the lower jaw to the skull and allows the movement in the jaw like chewing, talking and yawning. But when people refer to “TMJ”, they are actually talking about an issue affecting the joint, and not exactly the joint itself.

TMJ disorders can be caused by a variety of factors including:

Injury or trauma to the jaw

Arthirits

Misalignment of the jaw

Teeth grinding

Stress

And more

Essentially, anything that can cause the joint and surrounding muscles to become damaged can lead to TMJ.

Common symptoms for TMJ Disorders are:

Ear pain or earache

Popping sounds in ears

Headaches

Stiff or sore jaw muscles

Pain in the temple area

Locking of the jaw joint

Many patients see their primary doctor, general dentist, neuromuscular dentist and/or an EENT before a friend or family member mentions upper cervical care to them. The symptoms can vary making misdiagnosis very frequent and common.

Read our blog post to learn why orthodontics aren’t always the right TMJ treatment and how chiropractic care can help.

Keep reading to learn more about TMJ and how to determine if you are at risk of TMJ.

Your Jaw and Your Skull Are Connected

Most patients don’t think about their skull when they are having TMJ and symptoms. However, the upper jaw is attached to the skull. The lower jaw hinges open and closed by the temperomandibular joints. When there are problems with one or both of these joints, you get a variety of symptoms that affect eating, chewing, talking and even swallowing.

At Intouch Chiropractic we take specialized x-ray images to study the alignment of your skull in relation to your body. If your skull/head is tilted and out of place, it will affect your jaw and your TMJ indirectly. We look to get your head on straight so that when you open and close your mouth, you upper and lower jaw are in the optimal position alleviating the symptoms of TMJ.

With NUCCA | Upper Cervical Care protocols, we help patients get relief for TMJ symptoms without medications, night guards or surgery.

Do This Quick Test

Stand in front of the mirror and tap your teeth together. Now, tilt your head and tap your teeth together. Do you feel the difference? The position of your skull/head affects how your upper jaw and lower jaw function.

Having your head on straight is critical.

Temporomandibular joint disorder, commonly known as TMJ, is a condition that can cause discomfort and pain in the jaw, face, and head. While many seek orthodontic treatments like braces to address TMJ symptoms, it’s essential to understand that these methods may not always provide relief and can even exacerbate the condition.

If you’ve suffered with TMJ for an extended period of time, you may have found yourself wondering if chiropractic treatment can help TMJ.

In this easy-to-read blog post, we’ll explore TMJ, its symptoms, and how chiropractic care techniques can offer TMJ relief. We’ll also explain why orthodontics and braces may not be the ideal solution for everyone and why seeking chiropractor help with TMJ makes sense.

Understanding TMJ and Its Symptoms

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. TMJ disorder, often referred to as TMD, occurs when this joint becomes dysfunctional, leading to a range of symptoms. TMJ/TMD symptoms can include:

Jaw Pain: Aching or throbbing pain in the jaw, especially when chewing or talking.

Facial Pain: Discomfort or tenderness in the face, including around the ears.

Headaches: Frequent headaches, often resembling tension headaches or migraines.

Clicking or Popping: Audible clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when moving the jaw.

Limited Jaw Mobility: Difficulty or discomfort while opening the mouth wide or during jaw movement.

Ear Problems: Earaches, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or a feeling of fullness in the ears.

Neck and Shoulder Pain: Pain or stiffness in the neck and shoulders, often associated with muscle tension.

Now that we understand TMJ a little better, let’s get into one of the most common treatments: orthodontics.

Orthodontics and TMJ

Orthodontic treatments like braces are commonly recommended to address various dental and jaw issues, including misaligned teeth and bite problems.

However, for some individuals with TMJ, orthodontics may not provide the expected relief and can even worsen symptoms.

Here’s why orthodontics are not always the right answer for people suffering from TMJ disorder:

Misdiagnosis: TMJ symptoms can mimic other dental issues, leading to a misdiagnosis. Orthodontic treatments may focus on correcting dental misalignment, not addressing the underlying TMJ dysfunction.

Jaw Strain: Traditional braces can exert significant pressure on the jaw, which can exacerbate TMJ pain and discomfort.

Incorrect Bite Alignment: In some cases, orthodontic treatments can inadvertently worsen bite alignment, causing additional stress on the TMJ.

Delayed Diagnosis: TMJ disorder may not be recognized until orthodontic treatment is underway, making it challenging to adjust the treatment plan.

If you’ve tried orthodontics to deal with your TMJ jaw pain and have found no relief, the following sections will explain why chiropractic treatments may be the answer you are seeking.

Chiropractic Care for TMJ Relief

Chiropractic care offers a non-invasive, holistic approach to addressing TMJ symptoms by focusing on the alignment of the spine, particularly the cervical spine and jaw. Chiropractors who specialize in TMJ disorders can provide several benefits:

Precise Evaluation: NUCCA chiropractors conduct thorough assessments to determine the source of TMJ pain and dysfunction.

Holistic Approach: NUCCA chiropractors consider the interconnectedness of the body, addressing not only the jaw but also the spine, nervous system, and overall health.

Customized Treatment Plans: Each patient’s TMJ condition is unique, and our chiropractors create personalized treatment plans to suit your individual needs and goals.

As you can see, there are many benefits to seeking a TMJ chiropractor. Next, let’s cover why sometimes chiropractic therapy can actually be a better solution for someone than orthodontics.

“I had been dealing with debilitating TMJ popping, pain, and locking for years. I thought that surgery would end up being the only solution to give me better jaw function and better quality of life back. I’m so glad I took a leap of faith and made a consultation with Intouch chiropractic. I am about 1 month into my treatment plan and already feel significantly better. I have been smiling wider, have been able to make more facial expressions without being in pain, and have been able to enjoy eating and speaking without the constant locking. I feel very comfortable working with both Dr Tapia and Dr Young as they do subtle but effective adjustments without the scary popping and cracking. I have never had a greater appreciation for holistic care than I do now. I really like the incorporation of red light therapy, too, to help with inflammation. Valerie, the red light therapy technician, and Carolina, who helps organize appointments and patient care are very sweet and helpful, too.” – Intouch Chiropractic TMJ Care Review from Poppy B.

Why Chiropractic Care Is a Better Choice for Many TMJ Patients

While orthodontics can be effective for certain dental issues, TMJ is often related to the alignment of the jaw and cervical spine.

Chiropractic care can provide several advantages for TMJ sufferers over traditional orthodontics:

Non-Invasive: Chiropractic treatments do not require braces or other dental appliances.

Targeted Approach: Chiropractors focus on addressing the root cause of TMJ symptoms by restoring proper head, neck, and jaw alignment. This alone can alleviate many TMJ symptoms for many TMJD sufferers.

Natural Relief: Chiropractic care offers a natural way to alleviate TMJ pain without the need for surgery or medications.

Personalized Care: Our chiropractors tailor their treatment plans to each patient’s specific needs, ensuring effective and lasting relief.

Holistic Wellness: Chiropractic care promotes overall wellness by optimizing spinal and nervous system function, which can benefit not only TMJ but also other aspects of health.

TMJ Relief Is Possible

TMJ can be a challenging condition to live with, causing pain and discomfort in your daily life. While orthodontic treatments like braces are effective for many dental issues, they are not the best solution for many TMJ sufferers and can even worsen symptoms in many cases, like jaw stiffness, neck pain and overall discomfort in neck and jaw muscles.

Chiropractic care for TMJ offers a gentle, non-invasive, and holistic approach to addressing TMJ symptoms by focusing on spinal and jaw alignment. If you’re experiencing TMJ discomfort, consult with our chiropractors. They specialize in TMJ disorders and help many patients get TMJ relief.

Remember that everyone’s TMJ condition is unique, so it’s crucial to seek a healthcare provider who can provide personalized care and help you find the most effective solution for your specific needs. Don’t let TMJ pain hold you back from a comfortable, pain-free life—explore chiropractic care as an option to get relief.

Don’t hesitate to contact us for a TMJ assessment and to start TMJ treatment in San Diego.

The Anatomy of the Neck

Firstly, if you are reading this, you’re likely looking for answers to what is causing your frequent headaches. Am I right? Headaches: is the cause inside your neck? Although headaches and migraines can be caused by many different factors, the problem starts in the neck (cervical spine). There are seven vertebrae and eight cervical nerves that make up the cervical spine. That is to say, the cervical nerves control your head, neck, shoulders, arms and hands. Also, the nerves send electrical impulses which are responsible for sensation, movement and function. Also, when sufficient pressure is applied to a nerve; sensation, movement and function can be altered. This shows up as numbness, tingling, burning, pain, inflammation, decreased range of motion, neck pain and headaches. If this pressure continues, these symptoms can become chronic.

…Connect the dots between posture, headaches and neck pain

Poor Posture and Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches (literally meaning neck caused headaches) are caused by nerves getting crushed and pinched by tight muscles in which they travel through as they make their way to the scalp. However, to connect the dots between posture, headaches and neck pain, it’s necessary to look at what happens to the first seven vertebrae of the spine. We do this while you sit in a hunched over position. The sternocleidomastoid muscle that runs from the back of your ear to the front of the neck becomes stretched, while the muscles in the back of the head have to strain to compensate for balance. Also, this puts pressure on the occipital nerve, which is positioned at the small hollow at the base of the skull. This is a major sensory nerve and a direct pathway by which neck pain can travel straight to your head.

In addition, you may experience facial pain along with the headache and neck pains when the trigeminal nerve is involved- this could be signs of trigeminal neuralgia. Also, the spinal accessory nerve can interact with the upper three cervical nerve roots, resulting in cervicogenic headaches. Call our office at (619) 756-7510 for a consultation.

Congratulations Dr. Devin Young!

Dr. Devin Young has completed the Diplomate in Craniocervical Junction Procedures (DCCJP).

It’s a HUGE accomplishment, as he is the only Diplomat in Southern California! Also, it truly symbolizes his commitment and dedication to upper cervical care and the chiropractic profession at large.

Firstly, the diplomate program through the International Chiropractic Association consisted of 300+ hours of classroom instruction over 30 months! Yes, you read that right, it was a big commitment.

Secondly, once a month Dr. Young either traveled to Chicago, Tampa, Davenport or the Bay Area to meet with a handful of dedicated colleagues to become true experts in this specialized field of chiropractic care.

In addition, his class only had 1 other chiropractor from California. The other California chiropractor practices in Northern California and is one of his best friends, Dr. Noah Kaplan. You know what they say, birds of a feather flock together…

Lastly, this rigorous program included not only classroom time, but also sitting for multiple written exams. In addition, a case presentation, multiple oral exams, and being NUCCA certified.

Topics that were covered in the DCCJP:

Firstly, Neuroradiology

Secondly, CBCT

Along with Outcome Assessments and Technology

Advanced MRI Imaging

Cranio-cervical Junction Imaging

Upper Cervical Anatomy

Functional Neurology

Along with, Spinal Biomechanics

Lastly, Cranio-cervical Junction Anatomy

To say the least, we are so grateful to have such an outstanding upper cervical doctor in San Diego, CA. Although Dr. Young is focused on getting patients out of pain quickly, he is equally committed to helping them stay well. Congratulations Dr. Young!

How to Prevent Neck Pain

There are any ways you can prevent neck pain without ever stepping foot in a doctor’s office. Apply these tips to prevent the common causes of neck pain:

#1 Change Your Sleeping Positions

If you wake up with a stiff neck often, you likely have to change your sleeping positions or get a new pillow. Sleeping on your stomach is always a no-no. This position causes you to turn your head for many hours in order for you to be able to breathe. Imagine how this position adds up to hours, days, weeks and months. Sleeping on your stomach is one of the top causes of neck pain. So, it’s no surprise that when you sleep on your stomach for hours, you wake up with neck pain and can further develop sleep problems. Check out our best pillow recommendation for neck pain.

#2 Take Breaks During the Day

When you spend long hours at a computer or driving around, make sure to take a break once every hour. Make sure to get up and walk around, stretch, do some jumping jacks. Movement is life, so make sure you don’t get stuck in one position for too long- this can lead to facet syndrome later on in life. When you take breaks often, it keeps your neck muscles from staying in a fixed position during all of that screen time.

#3 Quit Smoking

Smoking is known to damage the discs between your vertebrae and cause early arthritis in your neck. This is a tough habit to break. So true commitment will be required of you, because we don’t recommend the smoking cessation medications that are often prescribed.

#4 Invest In a Better Purse or Bag

Regularly carrying a heavy bag or purse over one shoulder can result in neck and shoulder pain. Consider switching to a messenger bag, backpack or another type of bag that allows you to better distribute the weight evenly. Take anything that is non-essential out of your purse or bag. Your spine will thank you for it.

#5 Develop a Stress Management Routine

Good stress management methods help you minimize the amount of stress that builds up on your neck and shoulders. A quick 10 minute meditation is a great way to reduce stress, as well as a short walk around the block.

The Symptoms of Neck Pain

Neck pain can involve tightness and spasms in the muscles of your neck. It can also result in decreased range of motion making it difficult to look over your shoulder or look up or down. Neck pain can worsen when you hold your head in one position, such as looking at a computer monitor for a long period of time or sleeping on your stomach. Tension builds up over time and can become chronic neck pain.

What is TMJ?

If you’re suffering from TMJ, this post will help you understand how to get relief for TMJ Symptoms in San Diego. The temperomandibular joint (TMJ) gets its name from the two bones that comprise this joint. The temporal bone of the cranium and the mandible fit together to form a hinge-like jaw joint. There is an articular disc in the space between the two bones. Although the TMJ is classified as a hinge-type joint, it’s movement is more complex than that. Side-to-side jaw movement requires a sliding action of the joint, while opening and closing the jaw is a simple hinge action. Chewing food requires a combination of these 2 movements.

Muscles Involved With Chewing

There are four pairs of muscles of mastication, that allow the complex movement of chewing. They are highly organized and very strong:

Temporalis muscle: closes the jaw by pulling on the mandible in different directions

Masseter muscle: closes the jaw by pulling on the cranial bones

Internal pterygoid muscle: closes the jaw and moves it side to side

External pterygoid muscle: closes and opens the jaw

The muscles of the neck are also connected, as you lean forward to take a bite, for example. All muscles communicate with each other through the nervous system. Muscles in the front of the neck must organize and communicate with the muscles in the back of the neck. When tilting the head to look up, the muscles in the back of the neck contract and the nerves signal the muscles in the front of the neck to relax. As you can imagine, these actions and signals become more complex as you move your head forward or backward while rotating your head.

How Your Skull and Neck Relate to Your TMJ

One of the first steps to realign your bite, is to make sure your head is on straight over your neck and shoulders. That way, every time you chew, swallow, talk, and even breathe, the two joints work together in sync. If your head is tilted to one side, the two joints will have a tougher time coordinating jaw movement resulting in TMJ and jaw pain. NUCCA upper cervical chiropractors literally get your head on straight to give you a better chance of having proper biomechanics in the temperomandibular joints and a balanced bite.

Know someone suffering from TMJ disorders? Forward this blog post. We welcome patients in Southern California looking for San Diego TMJ treatment.

Many Migraine Patients Suffer for Years

Migraine relief is possible. Firstly, it is not uncommon for a patient to say during an initial consultation that they have been everywhere trying to get help for their migraines (our patient with chiari malformation for example). They have also taken every medication on the market with partial or no relief. Many times, they are desperate by the time they reach our office and hear about NUCCA upper cervical care- we provide relief from chronic migraines without drugs or surgery

Learn about the latest in migraine research at nucca.org.

NUCCA: Migraine Treatment

After adjusting many patients that suffer from severe migraines, with and without auras, intractable and not intractable, with and without status migraineurs, we understand what you are going through. Also, we see the patterns that many patients go through. Not only, are chronic migraines and headaches extremely painful and uncomfortable, they can be disruptive to your social life, work life, and even home life. Migraines and Headaches: Learn the Difference

A part of the brain, the hypothalamus, receives migraine and headache triggers, and sends the signals to the upper brainstem activating the trigeminal nerve, which sets off a migraine episode (and can also be a sign of trigeminal neuralgia). The NUCCA procedure studies and analyzes the area of the spine which houses the brainstem. In addition, we look at body imbalance starting at the upper neck. This part of the spine is known as the upper cervical spine. Lastly, if there is a misalignment of atlas, the top vertebra of the spine, it can put direct pressure on the brainstem with the potential to cause migraine and headache symptoms.

There is Hope for Migraine Sufferers

NUCCA Doctors Are Atlas Doctors. NUCCA is a gentle procedure that realigns atlas, taking pressure off the brainstem. Firstly, we do this by analyzing this area with precise NUCCA x-rays and restoring balance to this vital part of the spine. NUCCA oftentimes completely eliminates migraine symptoms or reduces the intensity and frequency of migraine episodes. The goal of NUCCA care is for a patient to come in and not need to be adjusted on every visit. In conclusion, your body will get stronger over time and require less input from us.

What is TMJ?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. This joint allows us to bite, chew, talk, sing, yawn, etc. It is the joint that lies on both sides of your mouth therefore it acts like a hinge between your upper and low jaw. According to the International College of Cranio-Mandibular Orthopedics (ICCMO), when this hinge joint becomes misaligned, it can cause severe pain and a variety of symptoms such as neck pain, headaches, migraines, shoulder pain, eye pain, vision loss, and even hearing loss. Many patients seek for TMJ relief for years.

What Is TMJ Dysfunction?

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is a term often used to describe when the TMJ has abnormal movement and symptoms. This is usually due to a misalignment of the jaw causing pressure and pain in the nerve or muscles around the joint. TMJ Disorders affect approximately 35 million Americans every year.

Abnormal Function of the TMJ

Our teeth are supposed to close neatly together when biting takes place. However, when the TMJ loses its ability to keep the teeth in the right position, the TMJ disorder patient compensates by adjusting their jaw movements to affect alignment and improve their bite. Over time this causes overworking and friction in the moving parts of the joint. As a result, pain, inflammation, arthritis, and crepitus can develop. In conclusion, it is nearly impossible to achieve a balanced bite without having your head aligned directly over your neck and shoulders.

What Causes TMJ Disorders?

Many factors can affect proper function of this joint including:

Injuries to the neck,

Injuries to the head,

Car accidents,

Sports accidents,

Slips and falls,

Alteration to the teeth (braces),

Blow to the jaw, and

Crooked, cracked, missing or damaged teeth.

NUCCA Chiropractors and Dentists Work Together to Provide TMJ Relief

Dentists especially trained by the International College of Cranio-Mandibular Orthopedics (ICCMO) and chiropractors trained by the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA) work together to help patients get relief for TMJ symptoms. One of the first steps to realign your bite is to ensure that your head is balanced on top of your neck. If your head tilts to one side, your jaw swings to the opposite side causing you to grind your teeth. The same thing can happen if you have anterior head carriage. NUCCA upper cervical chiropractors literally get your head on straight to give you a better chance of having proper biomechanics in the temporomandibular joints and a balanced bite.
The Link Between TMJ and Posture

Proper alignment of the bones, joints and muscles sets you up for optimal body function. Also, it is less than ideal to regularly sit hunched over your computer or slouch while standing or walking. In conclusion, the accumulation of these less than optimal positions eventually takes a toll.

A misaligned spine and poor posture will cause your lower jaw (mandible) to jut forward. This contributes to creating a bad bite, which is one of the primary causes of TMJ disorders.

Relief for TMJ Disorders Through NUCCA

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care and particularly the protocols from the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (NUCCA) are extremely effective at addressing temperomandibular joint symptoms from a holistic perspective. Firstly, the upper jaw is attached to the skull and NUCCA doctors study the relationship between the skull and the neck. Secondly, we take specific measurements from NUCCA x-rays. These x-rays help identify how to best adjust each individual patient based on their anatomy. Lastly, a NUCCA adjustment is very unique to each anatomy so no one will repeat itself. Even though it may feel similar, your anatomy is different from even your own siblings.

The Goal of NUCCA Care

The goal for patients with TMJ disorders in our office is to literally get their head on straight to facilitate body balance. Unfortunately, chronic poor posture can not be addressed by consciously sitting up straight, rolling your shoulders back or getting a fancy chair for your workstation. However, chiropractic can help with postural problems. According to Sue Hyland:

Postural Reflexes are automatic movements that control the equilibration we require once upright and moving and having to combat the effects of gravity. They maintain posture, balance and fluidity of movement…These reflexes are controlled by interplay between the sensory vestibular system; in the inner ear, the cerebellum and motor nerves controlling the muscles…the area of control is higher up the brain stem within the mid brain.

As you can see, conscious effort has little to do with our posture. It is deep set within our neurology. The good news is that NUCCA helps end jaw pain. Click here to see how and learn how our techniques can treat TMJ.
