Spinal decompression and chiropractic adjustments are two distinct treatment approaches for back and neck pain. So… what’s the difference between chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompression?

Chiropractic adjustments use precise, hands-on force to restore joint mobility and correct spinal alignment.

Spinal decompression uses gentle traction to relieve pressure on compressed discs and pinched nerves.

Both therapies can be effective, and in many cases, they work best together. In this blog post, we’ll highlight each method and draw distinctions between them both based on what we see everyday with our patients in San Diego, CA.

How Each Treatment Works: Chiropractic Adjustments vs Spinal Decompression

Understanding the mechanics behind each therapy helps clarify which one may be right for your condition.

What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a controlled, manual technique in which a chiropractor applies a short, precise force to a specific spinal joint. The goal is to restore proper movement to joints that have become restricted or misaligned. When a spinal joint loses its normal motion, the surrounding muscles, nerves, and soft tissues can become irritated, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced function.

Adjustments help correct that misalignment, allowing the nervous system to communicate more efficiently with the rest of the body.

At our office in the Mission Valley area of San Diego, CA, we specialize in the NUCCA technique. NUCCA is a highly precise, low-force form of chiropractic care that focuses on the alignment of the upper cervical spine. This approach is particularly effective for patients dealing with chronic neck pain, headaches, and whole-body postural imbalances.

Our patients who undergo NUCCA for the first time are regularly amazed at how effective this light-touch can be!

“The NUCCA approach here is precise, gentle, and effective. Every visit made a noticeable difference, and the results speak for themselves. ” NUCCA Review of Intouch Chiropractic by Carolina H.

What Is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression therapy involves gently stretching the spine using a specialized motorized table. This controlled traction creates a negative pressure inside the spinal discs, which can help retract herniated or bulging disc material and promote the flow of nutrients, oxygen, and healing fluids back into the disc.

It is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment typically used for patients with disc-related conditions such as herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, and sciatica.

“The drx900c spinal decompression machine gave me my life back. The staff are very helpful and nice. highly recommend.” – Spinal Decompression Review by Dylan G.

Conditions Each Therapy Is Best Suited For

These two treatments often overlap in the conditions they address, but there are key differences in what each approach targets most effectively.

When Chiropractic Adjustments Are Most Effective

Joint restriction and reduced spinal mobility

Muscle tension and spasm caused by misalignment

Neck pain and upper back pain

Chronic headaches and migraines related to cervical misalignment

General postural imbalances

Acute injuries from sports, falls, or auto accidents

When Spinal Decompression Is Most Effective

Herniated or bulging discs in the lumbar or cervical spine

Degenerative disc disease

Sciatica caused by disc compression

Spinal stenosis (in appropriate cases)

Radiating arm or leg pain from disc pressure on a nerve root

Chronic low back pain that has not responded to other conservative care

Key Differences Between the Two Treatments

While both therapies address spinal health without surgery or medication, they differ in technique, mechanism, and ideal patient profile.

Chiropractic adjustments focus on restoring joint motion and correcting vertebral alignment. The treatment is typically brief, targeted, and applied directly to a specific spinal segment.

Spinal decompression, by contrast, focuses on relieving disc pressure over an extended period. A typical decompression session lasts 15 to 30 minutes and involves a series of traction and relaxation cycles delivered by the decompression table.

Another key difference is the nature of force involved. Chiropractic adjustments use a quick, precise thrust (or in the case of NUCCA, an extremely gentle correction). Spinal decompression uses a slow, sustained pull along the axis of the spine.

Both are considered safe and gentle compared to surgery, but the experience of each treatment is quite different.

Can You Receive Both Treatments at the Same Time?

Yes, and in many cases, combining chiropractic care with spinal decompression produces better outcomes than either treatment alone. At our San Diego clinic, some of the best results we see occur when spinal decompression and NUCCA are used together as part of a single treatment plan.

When the spine is properly aligned through chiropractic adjustments, decompression therapy can work more effectively because traction is applied to a better-positioned spinal column. Similarly, decompression can reduce disc inflammation and nerve irritation, making the spine more receptive to chiropractic correction.

At Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, we evaluate each patient individually to determine the most appropriate combination of care. There is no one-size-fits-all protocol. Your treatment plan is built around your specific diagnosis, imaging findings, symptoms, and health history.

When to See a Chiropractor

You should consider scheduling an evaluation with a chiropractor if you are experiencing any of the following:

Persistent neck or back pain lasting more than a few weeks

Radiating pain, numbness, or tingling into the arms or legs

Pain that worsens after prolonged sitting, standing, or physical activity

Chronic headaches or migraines that do not respond to medication

Reduced range of motion in the neck or lower back

A recent diagnosis of a herniated disc, bulging disc, or sciatica

Early intervention is always preferable. When disc conditions and spinal misalignments are addressed in the earlier stages, the likelihood of achieving a strong recovery without surgery is significantly higher.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic Adjustments and Spinal Decompression

Is spinal decompression the same as traction?

They are similar but not identical. Traditional traction applies a constant pull to the spine. Modern spinal decompression uses a computer-controlled table that alternates between traction and relaxation cycles. This variation is thought to create a more effective negative pressure within the disc and reduce the muscle guarding response that can occur with constant traction.

Is spinal decompression painful?

The majority of our San Diego patients find spinal decompression to be comfortable and even relaxing. Some patients experience mild soreness after the first few sessions as the spine adjusts to the new forces being applied, but significant discomfort is not typical. If you have pain during treatment, let your provider know immediately so the settings can be adjusted.

How many chiropractic adjustments will I need?

The number of adjustments varies depending on your condition, how long you have had it, and how your body responds to care. Acute conditions may resolve in a relatively short treatment plan. Chronic or complex conditions often require a longer course of care. After a thorough examination, your expert chiropractor at Intouch Chiropractic will outline a recommended treatment plan with specific goals and timelines.

Can spinal decompression make a herniated disc worse?

When performed by a qualified provider and administered to an appropriate candidate, spinal decompression is safe for most herniated disc patients. However, it is not appropriate for everyone. Patients who are pregnant, have spinal fractures, severe osteoporosis, spinal tumors, or certain surgical implants may not be candidates. A thorough examination and review of your imaging is always completed before beginning decompression therapy.

Find Out Which Treatment Is Right for You

If you are dealing with back pain, neck pain, sciatica, or a disc condition and are not sure whether you need chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression, or both, the best place to start is a comprehensive evaluation. At Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, our team will take the time to understand your full history, perform a thorough examination, and create a care plan designed specifically for your needs.

In the modern world, sitting all day can just be part of life. For better or worse, most of our jobs require us to be stationary at a desk while working on a computer for large stretches of time week-to-week.

And often, this can lead to lower back pain problems.

You can prevent lower back pain from sitting all day by maintaining proper posture, taking regular movement breaks, and keeping your spine properly aligned. Prolonged sitting compresses the lumbar discs, strains the muscles supporting your spine, and disrupts the natural curves of the back. Small, consistent habits throughout your workday can make a significant difference in how your lower back feels.

In this post, we’ll highlight recommendations we regularly give our clients at Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego who are experiencing lower back pain as a result of prolonged sitting. First, let’s get into why sitting for so long can lead to back problems.

Why Sitting All Day Causes Lower Back Pain

Most people are surprised to learn that sitting is actually harder on the lower back than standing. When you sit, the pressure inside your lumbar discs increases significantly compared to when you are upright and moving.

Over the course of an 8 to 10 hour workday, that sustained compression adds up and can lead to disc irritation, muscle fatigue, and chronic pain.

Several specific factors contribute to lower back pain in desk workers and remote employees:

Lumbar disc compression: Sitting increases intradiscal pressure, which can accelerate disc degeneration and increase the risk of a bulging or herniated disc over time.

Hip flexor tightening: When your hips stay bent for hours, the hip flexor muscles shorten and pull on the lumbar spine, creating an anterior pelvic tilt that stresses the low back.

Weak core muscles: Sitting allows the deep stabilizing muscles of the core to disengage. Over time, these muscles weaken and are no longer able to adequately support the spine.

Poor posture: Slouching, crossing your legs, or leaning to one side creates uneven loading across the vertebrae and discs, which leads to muscle imbalances and joint irritation.

Spinal misalignment: Extended periods of poor sitting posture can shift the vertebrae out of their ideal alignment, placing stress on the joints, nerves, and surrounding soft tissues.

Next, let’s cover some of the most common symptoms of this issue that we often see in the patients who choose to work with us.

Common Symptoms of Sitting-Related Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain from prolonged sitting can show up in a variety of ways. Recognizing the early warning signs gives you the best chance of addressing the problem before it becomes chronic.

The symptoms we see most frequently in our patients are:

Dull, aching pain in the lower back that worsens toward the end of the workday

Stiffness or difficulty standing up straight after sitting for a long period

Tightness or cramping in the hips, glutes, or upper thighs

Sharp pain in the lower back when bending or twisting

Radiating pain, numbness, or tingling that travels down one or both legs (which may indicate sciatic nerve involvement)

Pain that temporarily improves with movement but returns when you sit back down

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms regularly, it is important not to dismiss them as just part of your job. These signs often indicate an underlying issue with spinal alignment or disc health that will only worsen without proper care.

Now that we’ve covered the causes and the symptoms, let’s get into how to prevent lower back pain from happening during a typical work week.

How to Prevent Lower Back Pain from Sitting All Day

The good news is that most sitting-related lower back pain is preventable. We regularly talk about the following strategies with our patients because they can dramatically reduce your risk and help protect your spinal health long term.

Set Up an Ergonomic Workstation

Your chair, desk, and monitor height all influence how your spine is positioned throughout the day. Adjust your chair so your feet rest flat on the floor and your knees are at roughly a 90-degree angle.

Your monitor should be at eye level to prevent you from craning your neck forward. A lumbar support cushion or an ergonomic chair with built-in lumbar support can help maintain the natural inward curve of the lower spine.

Take Movement Breaks Every 30 to 45 Minutes

Sitting for more than 45 minutes without interruption significantly increases lumbar disc pressure. Set a timer to remind yourself to stand up, walk around, or do a few gentle stretches every 30 to 45 minutes.

Even a two-minute walk around the office can restore circulation and relieve muscle tension in the lower back.

Stretch Your Hip Flexors and Hamstrings Daily

Tight hip flexors and hamstrings are major contributors to lower back pain in people who sit frequently. A daily stretching routine targeting these muscle groups can relieve tension on the lumbar spine and help restore proper pelvic alignment.

Simple stretches like a kneeling hip flexor stretch or a standing hamstring stretch can be done at your desk in just a few minutes.

Strengthen Your Core

A strong core acts like a natural brace for the spine. Exercises like planks, bird dogs, and dead bugs activate the deep stabilizing muscles of the core without putting excessive stress on the lumbar discs.

Even 10 to 15 minutes of core strengthening three to four times per week can significantly reduce your risk of lower back pain.

Consider a Standing Desk

Alternating between sitting and standing throughout the day reduces the cumulative stress on your lumbar spine. If a full standing desk is not an option, a desk converter that allows you to raise and lower your work surface is an affordable alternative.

Aim to stand for 15 to 30 minutes out of every hour.

Address Spinal Alignment with NUCCA Chiropractic Care

One of the most overlooked contributors to chronic lower back pain is a misalignment in the upper cervical spine. The position of the top two vertebrae in the neck (the atlas and axis) directly influences the alignment of the rest of the spine all the way down to the lumbar region.

When the upper cervical spine is out of alignment, it can cause compensatory shifts throughout the entire spinal column, making the lower back far more vulnerable to pain and injury from everyday activities like sitting.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we specialize in NUCCA chiropractic care, a precise, gentle approach to correcting upper cervical misalignments that addresses the root cause of lower back pain rather than just managing symptoms. Many of our patients report significant and lasting improvement in their lower back pain after NUCCA corrections, often without the need for medication or invasive procedures.

If you are dealing with persistent sitting-related back pain, a NUCCA evaluation may be the missing piece of your recovery plan. Learn more about Intouch Chiropractic lower back pain treatment in San Diego.

When to See a Chiropractor for Lower Back Pain

Minor lower back stiffness after a long day at the desk can often be addressed with stretching and movement. However, there are situations where professional evaluation is important:

Your pain has persisted for more than two to three weeks despite lifestyle changes

You experience pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates down one or both legs

Your pain is affecting your sleep, concentration, or ability to work

You notice weakness in your legs or feet

You have a history of disc problems, spinal stenosis, or prior back injuries

Ignoring these signs can allow the underlying problem to progress. Early intervention with conservative chiropractic care is almost always more effective and less costly than waiting until the pain becomes debilitating.

“Great treatment, as always! I lost my back ache I had for 40 years!!!! I got “used” to it, incredible I have no pain at all…! Thank you Doctors and your team for your wisdom, love you guys !!!! 💙 …” – Lower Back Pain Treatment Review for Intouch Chiropractic from Lourdes R.

Frequently Asked Questions About Back Pain from Prolonged Sitting

Can sitting at a desk cause permanent lower back damage?

Chronic, prolonged sitting without proper posture or movement breaks can contribute to lasting disc degeneration, muscle imbalances, and joint dysfunction over time. The damage is rarely immediate, but years of poor sitting habits can lead to conditions like lumbar disc herniation or chronic facet joint irritation.

What is the best sitting posture for lower back pain?

The best posture keeps your feet flat on the floor, your knees at a 90-degree angle, your hips slightly higher than your knees, and your lower back supported with a slight inward curve. Your shoulders should be relaxed and your monitor at eye level to prevent forward head posture, which increases stress on the entire spine.

Does walking help relieve lower back pain from sitting?

Yes. Walking is one of the most effective low-impact activities for relieving sitting-related lower back pain. It promotes circulation to the lumbar discs, engages the core and glute muscles, and helps decompress the spine. A 10 to 15 minute walk during your lunch break can significantly reduce afternoon back discomfort.

How is NUCCA chiropractic different from regular chiropractic for back pain?

NUCCA chiropractic focuses specifically on the alignment of the atlas vertebra at the top of the spine. Because the entire spinal column balances on this structure, a misalignment here affects posture and spinal mechanics from the neck all the way to the lower back. NUCCA corrections are extremely gentle, involving no twisting or cracking, and are designed to produce lasting results by restoring proper structural balance to the spine.

How soon can I expect relief from lower back pain with chiropractic care?

Many patients notice meaningful improvement within their first few visits. The timeline varies depending on how long the problem has been present and the degree of spinal misalignment. Your chiropractor will conduct a thorough evaluation and give you a realistic expectation based on your individual case.

Many people searching for TMJ treatment in San Diego feel stuck between night guards, medications, and the idea of jaw surgery, yet still wake up with jaw pain, headaches, or clicking when they chew.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we take a different approach by combining precise NUCCA upper cervical chiropractic care with advanced MLS laser therapy to address both the root alignment issues in the neck and jaw and the irritated soft tissues that keep flaring up. This integrative, gentle strategy is designed for patients who want lasting relief without aggressive jaw manipulation or invasive procedures.

In this article, you will learn how TMJ problems often begin higher up in the neck, why NUCCA corrections can reduce jaw tension and improve posture, and how laser therapy supports tissue healing, calms inflammation, and eases pain in the TMJ area.

First, let’s start with the basics. What is TMJ?

What is TMJ?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, the hinge that connects your lower jaw (mandible) to your skull just in front of each ear. These paired joints work in a coordinated fashion every time you open your mouth to speak, chew, yawn, or swallow.

Each TMJ is cushioned by a small disc of cartilage and controlled by an intricate network of muscles, ligaments, and nerves that also connect deeply into your neck and upper spine.

When we talk about TMJ disorder (often called TMD or TMJD), we are describing a range of conditions that cause pain, limited motion, or abnormal sounds in one or both of these joints. Some patients hear a pop or click when they bite down, others feel a dull ache that radiates into the temple or ear, and many notice stiffness in the jaw that makes it hard to open wide.

Because the TMJ sits at the intersection of your skull, jaw, and cervical spine, problems in any of these areas can trigger or worsen jaw symptoms.

What Does TMJ Have to Do with the Neck?

The connection between your neck and your jaw is far more direct than most people realize.

Your upper cervical spine, particularly the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae, sits just below the base of your skull and acts as the foundation for your head’s position and movement. When these top vertebrae are misaligned, they can shift the balance of your entire skull, which in turn changes the way your jaw hangs and moves.

A head that tilts forward or rotates slightly to one side will force the jaw muscles to work harder on one side, creating chronic tension, uneven bite pressure, and inflammation in the TMJ.

Additionally, the nerves that supply sensation and motor control to the jaw muscles emerge from the upper cervical region and the brainstem. When the atlas or axis vertebra shifts out of proper alignment, it can irritate or compress these nerve pathways, sending pain signals to the jaw, temple, and face even when the joint itself has no structural damage.

Many of our patients at Intouch Chiropractic report that their TMJ pain began shortly after a whiplash injury, a fall, or years of poor posture that gradually tilted the head forward. These events create a domino effect where the neck misalignment becomes the hidden driver of ongoing jaw dysfunction.

Next, let’s get into our successful TMJ treatments.

How Does NUCCA Help Treat TMJ?

NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) is a specialized technique that uses precise, gentle adjustments to realign the atlas vertebra at the top of your spine. Rather than twisting or popping the neck, NUCCA practitioners rely on detailed X-rays and mathematical analysis to determine the exact angle and direction of your misalignment, then apply a controlled, low-force correction.

By restoring proper alignment to the upper cervical spine, NUCCA addresses the root biomechanical and neurological issues that often fuel TMJ pain.

Key benefits of NUCCA for TMJ treatment include:

Restores balanced skull position: When the atlas is properly aligned, the head sits evenly on top of the spine, reducing strain on jaw muscles and allowing the TMJ to function symmetrically.

Reduces nerve irritation: Correcting upper cervical misalignment takes pressure off the brainstem and nearby nerves, which can decrease referred pain to the jaw, temple, and face.

Improves posture: Many TMJ patients have forward head posture that perpetuates jaw tension. NUCCA corrections help bring the head back over the shoulders, easing the load on neck and jaw muscles.

Non-invasive and gentle: There is no forceful twisting, cracking, or manipulation of the jaw itself, making it a comfortable option for people with sensitive or inflamed TMJ.

Long-lasting results: Because NUCCA addresses the structural foundation rather than just symptoms, patients often experience sustained relief that builds over multiple sessions.

How Can Laser Therapy Improve TMJ Treatment Results?

While NUCCA chiropractic addresses the structural and neurological root causes of TMJ dysfunction, MLS (Multiwave Locked System) laser therapy provides a powerful complement by targeting the inflamed soft tissues, tight muscles, and painful trigger points around the jaw and neck.

Many of our TMJ patients come to us with chronic inflammation in the joint capsule, overworked masseter and temporalis muscles, and irritated nerves that continue to send pain signals even after alignment begins to improve.

Laser therapy accelerates healing at the cellular level, helping the body recover faster and more completely.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we use FDA-cleared MLS laser technology that delivers specific wavelengths of light deep into the tissues. This light energy stimulates mitochondria within cells to produce more ATP (energy), which speeds up tissue repair and reduces oxidative stress. The result is decreased inflammation, improved circulation, and faster resolution of muscle spasms and nerve pain.

When combined with NUCCA corrections, laser therapy ensures that the tissues surrounding the TMJ can heal and adapt to the new, healthier alignment rather than pulling the jaw back into old, dysfunctional patterns.

Key ways laser therapy enhances TMJ treatment outcomes include reducing swelling and inflammation in the joint capsule, relaxing chronically tight jaw muscles without manual manipulation, promoting faster healing of damaged ligaments and connective tissue, decreasing pain sensitivity by calming overactive nerve endings, and supporting long-term stability by helping the soft tissues adapt to corrected alignment.

Patients often notice that their jaw feels looser, chewing becomes less painful, and morning stiffness improves more quickly when laser sessions are added to their NUCCA care plan.

Laser Therapy

NUCCA and Laser Therapy for TMJ Treatment in Conclusion

TMJ treatment in San Diego does not have to mean endless nights with a mouth guard, repeated cortisone shots, or invasive surgery.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we have built a comprehensive approach that recognizes TMJ pain often starts with misalignment in the upper cervical spine.

When the atlas or axis vertebra shifts out of position, it changes the way your skull sits on your spine, forces jaw muscles to compensate unevenly, and can irritate the nerves that control jaw function. NUCCA chiropractic uses precise, gentle corrections to restore proper alignment, removing the hidden biomechanical driver of jaw dysfunction and allowing the body to heal from the inside out.

Combining NUCCA with MLS laser therapy provides a complete solution that addresses both the structural foundation and the inflamed soft tissues around the TMJ. While NUCCA realigns the atlas and relieves nerve interference, laser therapy accelerates tissue repair, reduces inflammation, relaxes tight muscles, and supports faster recovery.

Our patients often experience less jaw pain, improved range of motion, fewer headaches, and better sleep as both therapies work together.

NUCCA chiropractic and DRX9000 spinal decompression treatments work better together because they target two distinct but deeply connected causes of chronic spinal pain. NUCCA corrects structural misalignment starting at the top of the spine, while the DRX9000 relieves disc pressure and promotes healing from within.

At our chiropractic office in Mission Valley, San Diego, we regularly combine both of these therapies to provide the most effective care to our patients that is possible. When combined, these two non-surgical therapies create a more complete and longer-lasting solution for patients dealing with back pain, neck pain, herniated discs, and sciatica.

Why One Treatment Often Isn’t Enough

The spine is not a collection of isolated parts. It is one continuous, interconnected system. A problem at the top of the spine can create compensatory stress all the way down to the lower back, and compressed discs in the lumbar region can worsen nerve irritation that travels into the legs.

This is why patients who only treat one piece of the puzzle often find that their relief is partial or short-lived.

There are two primary drivers behind most chronic spinal pain:

Structural misalignment: When the atlas (C1 vertebra at the top of the spine) is out of position, the rest of the spine shifts to compensate, creating abnormal stress on discs, nerves, and muscles throughout the entire spinal column

Disc compression and damage: Herniated, bulging, or degenerated discs place direct pressure on spinal nerves, producing pain, numbness, tingling, and limited mobility

Nerve irritation: Compressed nerves along the spine can cause localized pain or radiating symptoms like sciatica, which travels from the lower back through the hip and down the leg

Chronic inflammation: Ongoing disc pressure and misalignment prevent normal blood and nutrient flow to damaged areas, slowing the body’s natural healing process

When structural misalignment goes uncorrected, even the best disc therapy will only provide temporary relief.

And if compressed discs are not treated directly, a spinal alignment alone cannot restore disc health.

Combining NUCCA and DRX9000 addresses both problems simultaneously.

Next, let’s cover some of the most common types of symptoms we see in our patients that our team believes are qualified for this type of NUCCA and DRX9000 combined treatment approach.

Symptoms That Respond Well to Combined Care

Our patients who tend to benefit most from the combined NUCCA and DRX9000 approach often present with more than one type of complaint. Common symptoms that signal a need for this integrated approach include:

Chronic lower back pain that hasn’t resolved with medication, physical therapy, or traditional chiropractic care

Neck pain and stiffness, especially when it seems to radiate or cause headaches and shoulder tension

Sciatic pain: sharp, shooting, or burning pain that travels from the lower back through the buttock and down one or both legs

Numbness or tingling in the arms, hands, legs, or feet, which can indicate nerve compression along the spine

Pain that worsens with sitting, standing, or certain movements, suggesting disc involvement

Limited range of motion in the neck or lower back that interferes with daily activities

If you recognize more than one of these symptoms, your condition likely involves both structural misalignment and disc damage.

And that’s exactly what the NUCCA + DRX9000 combination is designed to treat.

How NUCCA and DRX9000 Work as a Team

At Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, combining NUCCA upper cervical adjustments with DRX9000 spinal decompression is a core part of how we approach complex spinal cases. Here’s how each therapy contributes:

What NUCCA Chiropractic Does

NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) is a gentle, highly precise form of chiropractic care that focuses on the atlas, the first vertebra at the very top of the spine. When the atlas is misaligned, even by a fraction of a degree, the body compensates by shifting the spine, hips, and pelvis out of balance. This creates uneven loading on discs and joints throughout the entire spine.

NUCCA adjustments are performed by hand with no cracking or twisting. The correction is subtle but powerful: by restoring proper alignment at the top of the spine, the body can realign naturally from the head down to the pelvis.

This takes abnormal pressure off discs and nerves and creates the structural foundation that makes other therapies far more effective.

“The NUCCA approach here is precise, gentle, and effective. Every visit made a noticeable difference, and the results speak for themselves.” – Intouch Chiropractic NUCCA Review by Carolina H.

What the DRX9000 Does

The DRX9000 is the gold standard in FDA-cleared non-surgical spinal decompression technology.

During treatment, you lie comfortably on a specialized table while a computer-controlled system applies a precise, gentle pulling force to your spine. This creates negative pressure inside the affected discs, a vacuum-like effect that encourages herniated or bulging disc material to retract, reduces nerve compression, and allows oxygen and nutrient-rich fluids to flow back into damaged discs.

Sessions typically last 26 minutes, and most patients find the treatment so comfortable they fall asleep.

A standard treatment plan consists of 16–24 sessions over 8–12 weeks. Unlike surgery, there is no recovery downtime. Patients who come into our office for this treatment return to normal activities immediately after each visit.

“The DRX9000 spinal decompression machine gave me my life back. The staff are very helpful and nice. highly recommend.” – DRX9000 Intouch Chiropractic Review by Dylan G.

Why NUCCA and Spinal Decompression Work Better Together

When NUCCA is performed first, it corrects the underlying structural imbalances that cause uneven disc pressure. This means the DRX9000 can work on discs that are now in better alignment, making decompression more targeted and effective. Conversely, as the DRX9000 heals and rehydrates damaged discs, the spine becomes easier to maintain in proper alignment, supporting the results of NUCCA adjustments long-term.

Think of it this way: NUCCA sets the foundation, and DRX9000 rebuilds what’s damaged on top of it.

Together, they address both the cause and the consequence of chronic spinal pain. And this happens without surgery, without drugs, and without lengthy recovery.

When to See a Doctor for These Symptoms

Not every back pain episode requires advanced treatment. However, certain signs suggest that your spine needs professional evaluation as soon as possible:

Pain that has lasted more than 4–6 weeks without improvement

Radiating pain, numbness, or weakness that extends into your arms or legs

Pain that wakes you from sleep or prevents normal daily activities

A history of disc injury, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease

Previous spinal surgery that did not fully resolve your symptoms

If you’ve already tried medication, injections, or standard physical therapy without lasting results, it’s worth exploring whether a combination of NUCCA and DRX9000 could be the missing piece of your treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Combining NUCCA and DRX9000 Spinal Decompression

Can NUCCA chiropractic and DRX9000 spinal decompression be done on the same visit?

Yes. At Intouch Chiropractic, treatment plans are customized to each patient’s needs and may include NUCCA adjustments, DRX9000 decompression, laser therapy, and shockwave therapy — sometimes during the same appointment. Your doctor will determine the optimal sequence and frequency for your specific condition.

Is the DRX9000 painful?

No. DRX9000 spinal decompression is a comfortable, non-invasive treatment. The machine applies a gentle, computer-controlled pulling force to the spine, and most patients describe the experience as relaxing. Sessions last approximately 26 minutes, and many patients rest or fall asleep during treatment.

How is NUCCA different from regular chiropractic adjustments?

NUCCA focuses exclusively on the atlas vertebra at the very top of the spine and uses no cracking, twisting, or high-force manipulation. The adjustment is extremely gentle and precise, correcting misalignment at the head-neck junction that affects the entire spine and nervous system. It is a distinct specialty within chiropractic care with a very different technique and philosophy.

How many sessions will I need?

Most DRX9000 treatment plans involve 16–24 sessions over 8–12 weeks. NUCCA care varies depending on how well the spine holds its correction. Some of the patients we see need frequent visits early on. And some of our other patients maintain alignment for months between adjustments. The best way to determine how many sessions you will need is to come see us in Mission Valley, San Diego!

If you are struggling with chronic neck pain, low back pain, or radiating sciatic pain, there is a good chance that worn, irritated, or injured spinal discs are part of the problem.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we see every day how compromised disc health can affect far more than comfort, impacting sleep, work productivity, focus, and overall quality of life. Many patients come to us after trying medications, general chiropractic, massage, or even injections with only short term relief, still searching for a solution that addresses the underlying cause of their disc related pain.

That is where the combination of NUCCA care and shockwave therapy for disc health becomes a powerful, noninvasive option.

In this article, we will explain how NUCCA care gently restores balance to the upper cervical spine, how shockwave therapy improves circulation and tissue healing, and why integrating these two approaches can be especially effective for disc problems in the neck and lower back. By the end, you will have a clearer understanding of how “shockwave therapy NUCCA disc health” fits together as a comprehensive strategy to support your spine, protect your discs, and help you get back to the activities you enjoy most.

Let’s start with the basics: what are shockwave therapy and NUCCA?

Exploring Shockwave Therapy and NUCCA

Let’s first cover shockwave therapy.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), is a noninvasive treatment that uses high energy acoustic waves to stimulate healing in damaged or degenerative tissues.

Originally developed to break up kidney stones, shockwave therapy has evolved into an effective tool for treating musculoskeletal conditions, including tendon injuries, plantar fasciitis, and spinal disc problems.

The acoustic pulses penetrate deep into soft tissue, triggering increased blood flow, reducing inflammation, and promoting the body’s natural repair mechanisms.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we use focused shockwave therapy to target specific areas of disc irritation and surrounding musculature, helping to relieve pain and restore function without the need for surgery or medications.

What is NUCCA?

NUCCA stands for the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association, a specialized technique that focuses on the precise alignment of the atlas (C1 vertebra), the top bone in your spine.

Unlike traditional chiropractic adjustments that may involve forceful twisting or popping, NUCCA is a gentle, calculated approach that uses minimal force to correct misalignments in the upper neck.

Even small misalignments in the atlas can create a chain reaction throughout the spine, affecting posture, nerve function, and putting uneven stress on spinal discs. By restoring proper atlas alignment, NUCCA care helps the entire spine return to balance, reducing pressure on discs and allowing the body to heal more effectively.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we use advanced imaging and precise measurements to deliver personalized NUCCA corrections tailored to each patient’s unique spinal structure.

How Do Shockwave Therapy and NUCCA Benefit Disc Health?

When used together, shockwave therapy and NUCCA chiropractic create a powerful synergy for addressing disc problems.

NUCCA care corrects the underlying structural imbalances that put excessive stress on your discs, while shockwave therapy directly stimulates healing in the damaged disc tissue and surrounding musculature. This comprehensive approach addresses both the cause and the symptoms of disc pain, giving your body the best possible environment to heal naturally.

Patients at Intouch Chiropractic often report faster recovery times and more lasting results when combining these two modalities compared to using either treatment alone.

Key benefits of combining shockwave therapy and NUCCA for disc health include:

Reduced inflammation around irritated discs: Shockwave therapy decreases swelling and promotes faster healing, while NUCCA removes the biomechanical stress that caused the inflammation in the first place.

Improved nutrient delivery to disc tissue: Proper spinal alignment from NUCCA enhances circulation, and shockwave therapy further boosts blood flow to deliver the oxygen and nutrients discs need to regenerate.

Pain relief without medication: Both therapies work naturally with your body’s healing systems, providing relief from disc pain without relying on painkillers, muscle relaxers, or anti-inflammatory drugs that only mask symptoms.

Better posture and spinal balance: NUCCA corrections restore proper alignment from the top down, reducing the compensatory patterns that overload certain discs and protecting them from future injury.

Enhanced mobility and flexibility: As disc pressure decreases and tissue healing improves, patients experience greater range of motion in the neck and back, making daily activities easier and more comfortable.

Long term stability: Unlike temporary fixes, this combined approach addresses root causes, helping patients maintain disc health over time and reduce the risk of recurring problems.

Sciatica can make simple daily tasks feel unpredictable, especially when pain, tingling, or weakness suddenly flare in your lower back, hip, or leg. Many patients who visit us at Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego are looking for a sciatica natural treatment San Diego option that does more than temporarily numb symptoms and instead targets the underlying cause of nerve irritation.

If you are hoping to avoid relying on pain medications or rushing into surgery, gentle NUCCA chiropractic care combined with advanced non-invasive therapies can offer a precise and comprehensive path forward.

As NUCCA chiropractors, we focus on how the alignment of your upper neck, lower back, and pelvis affects the tension on your sciatic nerve and the surrounding discs, joints, and muscles.

In this article, we will explain what sciatica really is, why it keeps coming back, and how we use NUCCA spinal care, non surgical spinal decompression, laser therapy, and other natural options to relieve pain and support long term healing.

First, let’s cover the basics around sciatica.

“Dr. Young helped me after a car accident. Being a stylist I am on my feet a lot. My sciatica pain was at a new high. A couple months of treatment has helped to maintain pain. I am able to brush my teeth without a sharp pain.” Intouch Chiropractic Sciatica Review by Cassandra S.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is not a diagnosis by itself but a way to describe pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve from your lower back into your hip, buttock, and leg.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body and can become irritated or compressed by issues such as a herniated disc, spinal misalignment, or inflammation around the joints and soft tissues in your lower back and pelvis.

When this nerve is stressed, you may feel sharp, shooting pain, burning, or “pins and needles” that often affects just one side of the body and may worsen with sitting, bending, coughing, or sneezing.

At Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, we look beyond the obvious symptoms to identify where in your spine and pelvis the irritation is coming from so that your sciatica natural treatment San Diego plan can focus on lasting relief, not just short term pain management.

Why Does it Feel Like Sciatica Goes and Comes Back?

Sciatica often comes and goes because the underlying issue irritating the sciatic nerve has not fully healed or been corrected. Changes in posture, long periods of sitting, bending or lifting, and certain movements can temporarily increase pressure or inflammation around the nerve, which makes symptoms flare, then ease again once that stress is reduced.

Muscle imbalances, weak core and hip support, or subtle spinal misalignments can also leave the sciatic nerve more vulnerable, so even small daily stresses are enough to reignite symptoms. This is why addressing only the pain, instead of the mechanics of your spine and pelvis, often leads to a frustrating cycle of relief followed by another flare up.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we look for these underlying structural and movement patterns so your sciatica natural treatment San Diego plan is designed to calm the nerve and reduce the chances of recurring episodes.

How to Treat Sciatica Naturally

Natural sciatica care focuses on reducing inflammation and nerve irritation while correcting the underlying mechanics of your spine and pelvis so the problem does not keep coming back. Instead of simply masking pain with medications, we look at how your posture, spinal alignment, and disc health are affecting the sciatic nerve, then build a plan that combines gentle, targeted therapies with home strategies that support healing.

When patients work with the team at Intouch Chiropractic, each sciatica natural treatment San Diego plan is customized to the patient’s history, exam findings, and goals so they can get relief in a way that fits their lifestyle.

NUCCA is a very gentle chiropractic approach that focuses on the alignment of the upper neck, which influences the rest of your spine, including your lower back and pelvis. By using precise measurements and low force adjustments, we work to rebalance the way your head sits over your spine, which can reduce compensations and abnormal loading further down where the sciatic nerve is irritated.

Many patients appreciate that NUCCA adjustments do not involve twisting, cracking, or popping, yet can make a meaningful difference in their posture, nerve tension, and overall comfort.

Non Surgical Spinal Decompression

For many sciatica patients, irritated or bulging discs in the lower back are a major part of the problem. Non surgical spinal decompression gently stretches and relaxes the spine in controlled cycles, which helps reduce pressure on the discs and creates more space around the sciatic nerve.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we use advanced DRX9000 decompression technology to target the specific levels involved, promoting better fluid exchange, disc hydration, and long term relief without injections or surgery.

MLS Laser Therapy

MLS laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular activity in irritated tissues around the sciatic nerve. This therapy is painless and works below the surface to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and support tissue repair in muscles, ligaments, and joints that are contributing to your pain.

When combined with NUCCA care and spinal decompression, laser therapy can help calm stubborn flare ups faster and support a smoother healing process.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy delivers controlled acoustic pulses into tight or irritated soft tissues that may be aggravating your sciatic nerve, such as deep hip muscles or tendon attachments. These pulses help break up adhesions, improve local blood flow, and encourage the body’s natural healing response in areas that have become chronically strained.

For some patients, addressing these soft tissue components alongside spinal care is the key to unlocking better mobility, less nerve irritation, and more lasting relief from sciatica symptoms.

Whether you’re a weekend warrior, competitive athlete, or professional player in San Diego, your body endures significant physical demands that can lead to injury, chronic pain, and diminished performance.

At Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, we’ve seen firsthand how specialized chiropractic care transforms athletic potential by addressing the root causes of musculoskeletal dysfunction rather than simply masking symptoms.

As a sports chiropractor in San Diego, our approach focuses on optimizing spinal alignment, enhancing nervous system function, and creating individualized treatment plans that help athletes prevent injuries before they sideline their training or competition.

The connection between proper spinal alignment and athletic performance is profound. When your spine and upper cervical region are misaligned, nerve signals become compromised, affecting everything from muscle coordination and reaction time to flexibility and recovery speed.

Through our NUCCA chiropractic technique and comprehensive sports medicine approach, we help San Diego athletes achieve peak performance by restoring proper biomechanics, reducing inflammation, and accelerating healing processes.

“I have had multiple injuries over the years and can always count on Intouch Chiropractic to help me heal! Both doctors do amazing work and they always have the latest technology. Their advanced laser therapy is incredible. I feel better already after only 2 visits.” – Intouch Chiropractic review by Elsa G.

In this guide, we’ll explore how chiropractic care serves as a cornerstone of injury prevention, explain the specific benefits for athletes across all sports, and share how our evidence-based methods at Intouch Chiropractic can help you perform at your absolute best while staying injury-free throughout your athletic career.

Why Athletes Need Specialized Chiropractic Care

Athletes place very specific, repetitive demands on their bodies, so their care needs to be just as specialized.

As a sports chiropractor in San Diego at Intouch Chiropractic, we look beyond general spine care to understand how your particular sport, position, and training schedule affect your joints, muscles, and nervous system. This allows us to design targeted plans that support both immediate performance and long-term durability so you can keep training, competing, and progressing with confidence.

Key reasons athletes benefit from specialized chiropractic care include:

Repetitive movements and high-impact forces create joint restrictions and muscle imbalances that need precise assessment and correction instead of one-size-fits-all care.

Proper spinal and upper cervical alignment supports efficient nerve communication, which improves coordination, reaction time, and overall neuromuscular control during sport.

Restoring healthy biomechanics reduces abnormal stress on ligaments, tendons, and cartilage, lowering the risk of overuse injuries and breakdown over a long season.

Regular chiropractic care can enhance range of motion and flexibility, so athletes can move more freely, generate power efficiently, and perform complex movements with less restriction.

Evidence suggests that aligned joints and balanced muscle function contribute to faster recovery after practices, games, and minor injuries, which is critical when training loads are high.

A sports chiropractor can help manage pain without relying on medications, focusing on underlying mechanical issues so athletes can stay clear-headed and compliant with anti-doping rules.

Professional and collegiate teams increasingly use chiropractic as part of integrated sports medicine programs because it helps keep athletes on the field and performing closer to their potential.

Our NUCCA-based approach and advanced diagnostics help us identify subtle misalignments and movement patterns that standard exams can miss, giving San Diego athletes a more precise roadmap for staying healthy and progressing in their sport.

What are the Best Chiropractic Treatments for Athletes?

Athletes need care that does more than just “crack” the spine. Here at Intouch Chiropractic, we combine precise upper cervical work with advanced, noninvasive technologies to help San Diego athletes move better, recover faster, and stay in the game with less reliance on medication or invasive procedures.

Our signature combination of NUCCA upper cervical care, non-surgical spinal decompression, laser therapy, and shockwave therapy allows us to target different layers of an injury, from irritated nerves and discs to stubborn soft tissue, while always keeping your sport and performance goals in mind.

NUCCA Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care

NUCCA is a gentle, highly specific form of upper cervical chiropractic that focuses on correcting subtle misalignments at the top of the neck where the head meets the spine.

For athletes, this area is critical because even a small shift can throw off balance, posture, and body mechanics, which may translate into slower reaction times, poorer coordination, and increased strain on muscles and joints throughout the body. By restoring head and neck alignment without twisting or forceful popping, NUCCA helps optimize nervous system function, which can support better movement patterns, improved body awareness, and more efficient power transfer in sport-specific motions such as swinging, sprinting, cutting, or rotating.

Learn more about NUCCA.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Non-surgical spinal decompression uses a computer-guided traction table to gently create space between the vertebrae and reduce pressure on spinal discs and nerves.

This is especially valuable for athletes who deal with disc bulges, herniations, sciatica, or chronic low back pain from years of lifting, running, or impact, because it addresses the source of nerve irritation rather than just numbing the pain. By improving disc hydration and reducing mechanical stress on the spine, spinal decompression can help athletes tolerate higher training volumes with less flare-up, extend the longevity of their spine, and return more comfortably to movements like deadlifting, jumping, and rotational loading.

Learn more about spinal decompression.

Class IV Laser Therapy

Class IV laser therapy delivers concentrated light energy into tissues to promote circulation, cellular activity, and local healing responses in muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints.

For athletes, this can be a powerful tool to calm stubborn inflammation, reduce pain, and speed tissue repair in problem areas such as knees, shoulders, ankles, and lower backs that take a beating in practice and competition. We often pair laser sessions with NUCCA or decompression to help San Diego athletes bounce back more quickly from acute strains and chronic overuse injuries so they can resume training with less downtime and fewer setbacks.

Learn more about laser therapy.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy uses controlled acoustic waves to stimulate blood flow, break up adhesions, and trigger a healing response in chronically irritated soft tissues.

This treatment is particularly helpful for athletic conditions like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendon issues, and stubborn muscle tightness that has not responded well to stretching or standard therapies. By addressing deep soft tissue problems that limit force production and range of motion, shockwave therapy helps athletes regain confidence in explosive movements, tolerate higher-intensity training, and reduce the risk of recurring flare-ups during their season.

Learn more about shockwave therapy.

Integrated, Athlete-Focused Care

While each treatment has unique benefits, the real power for athletes comes from combining them in a personalized plan that reflects your sport, position, and current injury status. We routinely pair NUCCA adjustments with spinal decompression, laser, or shockwave therapy to support both structural alignment and soft tissue recovery, which is exactly what most active bodies need to perform at their best over the long term.

If you are an athlete in San Diego and want to explore treatment options to keep you at the top of your game, contact Intouch Chiropractic today.

As we age, staying active, independent, and comfortable becomes more important than ever. Yet many seniors in San Diego quietly live with neck pain, back pain, arthritis, balance problems, or headaches because they worry that traditional chiropractic might feel too forceful.

The expert chiropractor team at Intouch Chiropractic understands those concerns.

That is why we specialize in NUCCA, a gentle upper cervical chiropractic technique that uses precise, light touch corrections instead of twisting or cracking the spine. For many older adults, this approach offers a safe, comfortable path to better mobility and less pain.

In this article, we will walk you through how NUCCA works, why it is uniquely suited to chiropractic care for seniors in San Diego, and what you can expect during your first visit at Intouch Chiropractic.

First, what is NUCCA and how does it work?

What is NUCCA and How Does it Work?

NUCCA stands for the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association, a specialized form of chiropractic that focuses on the relationship between the head and the top bone in the neck, called the atlas. Instead of adjusting multiple areas of the spine, NUCCA doctors carefully evaluate how a small misalignment at the upper neck can affect posture, balance, and the way the entire spine carries your weight.

This approach is gentle and highly precise, which makes it especially well suited for seniors who may have arthritis, osteoporosis, or prior surgeries.

At Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, your NUCCA visit begins with a detailed examination, posture assessment, and specialized imaging to measure exactly how your atlas is misaligned. Using those measurements, we apply a very light, controlled correction just below your ear to guide the atlas back toward its proper position without any twisting, popping, or cracking.

When the head and neck are realigned, the rest of the spine can relax and rebalance, which often reduces tension, improves mobility, and supports your body’s natural healing processes over time.

Why NUCCA is Ideal for Seniors

Many older adults want relief from pain and stiffness but feel unsure about traditional chiropractic methods that involve quick movements or strong pressure.

NUCCA provides an attractive alternative because it uses a highly specific, low force adjustment that is customized to each person’s spine and health history, including factors like arthritis, osteoporosis, and previous surgeries. With the team at Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, this gentle approach allows seniors to receive effective chiropractic care while feeling safe, respected, and fully informed at every step.

Some key reasons NUCCA is ideal for seniors include:dd

Extremely gentle and low force corrections that avoid twisting, popping, or cracking, which can be more comfortable for aging joints and fragile bones.

Detailed assessments with imaging and posture analysis so each adjustment is tailored to your unique spinal alignment and medical considerations.

Support for common age related issues such as neck pain, low back pain, headaches, arthritis, and spinal degeneration, often with less strain on the body than traditional methods.

Potential improvements in balance, coordination, and posture, which may help reduce the risk of falls and make walking or daily activities feel more stable.

A non-invasive, drug free option that can complement care from your primary doctor or specialist, and may help reduce reliance on pain medications over time.

Suitability for a wide range of health backgrounds, including patients who are older, more sensitive, or nervous about forceful adjustments.

A calm, patient centered experience at Intouch Chiropractic, where our team focuses on clear communication, gentle hands on care, and practical home strategies to help you stay active and independent.

“I can’t say enough great things about Intouch Chiropractic. From the moment you walk in, the staff is welcoming, professional, and genuinely caring. The doctors are incredibly knowledgeable and take the time to explain everything clearly, which makes you feel confident and comfortable with your care. The NUCCA approach here is precise, gentle, and effective. Every visit made a noticeable difference, and the results speak for themselves. This office truly puts patients first, and it shows in every interaction. I’m beyond grateful for the care I received and highly recommend this office to anyone looking for real healing and outstanding chiropractic care.” – Intouch Chiropractic NUCCA review by Carolina H.

What to Expect from an Intouch Chiropractic Treatment Plan

When a senior begins care at Intouch Chiropractic, we design a treatment plan that respects their health history, comfort level, and personal goals. Your NUCCA care is not a one size fits all protocol, but a customized roadmap that uses gentle upper cervical corrections and, when appropriate, complementary therapies to help you move, sleep, and live with less pain. Each step is clearly explained so you always know what is happening and why.

Here is what you can typically expect as a senior patient:

A thorough first visit that includes a detailed health history, posture and spinal assessment, and any necessary imaging to determine if you are a good candidate for NUCCA care.

A follow up visit where we review your exam and imaging findings in plain language, answer your questions, and outline a personalized treatment plan based on your needs and goals.

Gentle NUCCA adjustments delivered with low force, precise contact near the upper neck, with close monitoring of how your posture and symptoms change over time.

A phased approach that typically starts with more frequent visits for initial relief, then transitions to corrective care to stabilize the spine, followed by supportive or wellness checkups as you improve.

Access to additional non-invasive services, such as spinal decompression or laser therapy when appropriate, to support healing of discs, joints, and soft tissues.

Practical home recommendations, including posture tips, gentle movement or stretching strategies, and lifestyle guidance to help you maintain your progress between visits.

Regular re-evaluations so we can track your improvements in pain, mobility, balance, and daily function, and adjust your plan as your body changes.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain disorder that can cause some of the most severe facial pain imaginable. If you’ve ever wondered, “what is trigeminal neuralgia?” or are searching for effective treatments, understanding this condition is the first step toward relief.

In this blog post, we’ll cover the basics with this disorder and then cover a few treatments, including non-invasive treatments we have used to help treat our San Diego patients struggling with this issue.

First, what is trigeminal neuralgia?

What Is Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), also known as tic douloureux, is a nerve disorder that affects the trigeminal nerve—the main nerve responsible for sensation in your face. The condition is characterized by sudden, intense episodes of facial pain, often described as stabbing, electric shock-like, or shooting sensations.

These attacks can last from a few seconds to up to two minutes and typically affect one side of the face, involving areas such as the cheek, jaw, teeth, gums, lips, and occasionally the eye or forehead.

Pain attacks can be triggered by even the lightest touch or routine activities like brushing your teeth, chewing, talking, or, in extreme cases, even exposure to wind. Between attacks, some people may experience a dull ache or burning sensation, while others have periods of complete remission.

At Intouch Chiropractic, we see in our patients that TN is more common in women and people over 50. But it can occur at any age to both men and women.

What Causes Trigeminal Neuralgia?

The most common cause of trigeminal neuralgia is compression of the trigeminal nerve, usually by a nearby artery or vein pressing against the nerve where it enters the brainstem. This pressure can wear away the nerve’s protective myelin sheath, making the nerve hypersensitive and prone to sending pain signals.

In some cases, TN may be secondary to other conditions such as multiple sclerosis, tumors, cysts, or facial injury. Sometimes, no clear cause can be identified, which is referred to as idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia.

Symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia

Here are some of the more common symptoms we hear about from patients:

Sudden, severe, shock-like facial pain

Pain lasting from seconds to minutes

Pain triggered by touch, chewing, speaking, or even a breeze

Pain typically on one side of the face

Facial muscle spasms during attacks

Dull ache or burning between episodes

Now that we’ve covered the basics regarding trigeminal neuralgia, let’s get into how it is treated.

How Is Trigeminal Neuralgia Treated?

While trigeminal neuralgia can be persistent and debilitating, a range of effective treatments are available, ranging from traditional interventions like medication and surgery, to non-invasive treatments like chiropractic care.

Here are the most common ways to treat this disorder:

Medications like anticonvulsants and muscle relaxants

In extreme cases, surgery

Nerve blocks

Today, chiropractic care is becoming an alternative option for treating trigeminal neuralgia because it comes without the risks of surgery and medication. We always recommend our patients follow the advice of their primary care doctor, however if you are considering all of your options, here is why chiropractic care is a good option for treating trigeminal neuralgia.

Chiropractic Care for Trigeminal Neuralgia

Chiropractic care is considered a possible and increasingly popular treatment option for managing trigeminal neuralgia symptoms. While it does not cure the underlying cause, upper cervical chiropractic care can provide significant relief by addressing nerve interference and improving spinal alignment, particularly in the upper cervical spine, which may reduce pressure on the trigeminal nerve.

At Intouch Chiropractic, our doctors practice a chiropractic method called NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association). This technique is non-invasive and does not involve any popping, cracking or twisting of the neck or spine. NUCCA focuses on the alignment of the spine, specifically the top vertebrae in your spine, and how it interacts with the skull.

To learn more about how the expert team at Intouch Chiropractic may be able to help you, schedule a consultation with us today.

“I’ve been going to Intouch Chiropractic for a better part of this last year, and after 10 years of different conventional chiropractor treatments, my migraines went away completely within 2 weeks of NUCCA treatment. I’d been suffering for migraines for 17 years and have tried everything. I’m thankful for more pain free days, it was a great upfront investment but when you’re in chronic pain 4-5 days a week, you’ll pay almost anything to try to get better. I’m glad I chose this office.” – Intouch Chiropractic Review by Emilia F.

Lower back pain can disrupt your life, making daily activities difficult and limiting your mobility. At Intouch Chiropractic located in San Diego, California, we understand the importance of addressing the root cause of your pain—not just masking symptoms. We regularly see patients at our office who have tried everything and still can’t quite find relief. Maybe they are starting to consider surgery.

Surgery may be a last resort for some patients, but there are several non-surgical interventions to explore before then. Here are three non-surgical lower back pain treatments we offer that can help you find lasting relief.

3 Non-Surgical Treatments for Lower Back Pain

NUCCA Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care

NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) care is a gentle, precise, and non-invasive chiropractic technique that focuses on realigning the upper cervical spine. While it may seem surprising, the alignment of your head and neck plays a crucial role in the health and function of your entire spine—including your lower back. By correcting misalignments at the top of the spine, NUCCA care helps restore balance, reduces nerve irritation, and promotes natural healing throughout the body. Many patients experience significant improvements in lower back pain and overall well-being after a series of NUCCA adjustments.

I’m glad I chose this office.” – NUCCA Intouch Chiropractic Review by Emilia F.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (DRX9000)

For patients with disc injuries, herniated discs, or degenerative disc disease, our DRX9000 non-surgical spinal decompression therapy offers a safe, effective alternative to surgery. This state-of-the-art technology gently stretches the spine, creating negative pressure within the discs. This process helps retract bulging or herniated disc material, improves nutrient flow, and promotes healing of the affected area. There’s no downtime, and many patients notice relief after just a few sessions.

“I was struggling with lower back weakness and pain until I learned of spinal decompression. I was able to do a 2 week vacation recently with none of my original issues! Both Drs. at Intouch are great!” – Spinal Decompression Intouch Chiropractic Review by Robin K.

Shockwave and Cold Laser Therapy

Intouch Chiropractic also offers advanced therapies such as shockwave and cold laser therapy. These non-invasive treatments are designed to accelerate healing, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain in the lower back. Shockwave therapy uses acoustic waves to stimulate blood flow and tissue repair, while cold laser therapy uses low-level light energy to promote cellular regeneration. Both therapies can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments to enhance recovery and support long-term spinal health.

“Since starting the spinal decompression and the laser pain relief, I am back on the tennis and pickleball court. It really has helped me. And the staff is unbelievable. Very helpful and kind. Very happy I found them.” – Laser Therapy Intouch Chiropractic Review by Jim R.
