Degenerative disc disease is most commonly an age-related condition where spinal discs lose flexibility and cushioning, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. While it can’t be reversed, modern degenerative disc disease treatments effectively manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Approaches range from conservative therapies to surgical interventions, tailored to each patient’s needs.

In this blog post, we’ll cover a few ways to treat degenerative disc disease. But first, let’s cover some of the basics about this condition.

What is Degenerative Disc Disease?

There are many causes of degenerative disc disease. In young and healthy people, spinal discs provide height between the vertebra and allow us to bend, flex, and twist our spine. Our discs act like shock absorbers between our spinal bones and help us stay flexible.

Some healthcare professionals argue that degenerative disc disease and a reverse cervical curve are part of the aging process. We disagree. We have seen young people with “old looking” spines and older adults with “young looking” spines.

Regardless of age, when degeneration sets in, our spinal discs shrink, become brittle and lose their integrity. They may begin to bulge or there is a disc herniation.

Learn more: Bulging Discs vs Herniated Discs

The amount of trauma our spine has received throughout life shows up as wear and tear on our spines. In some cases of disc degeneration, the disc space becomes so compromised that the face joints of the vertebra rub against each other causing extreme pain.

Spinal stiffness is also a common symptom of degeneration, especially in the morning or after being in the same position for an extended period of time. Unlike other body tissues, there is very little blood supply to the disc making it difficult for the body to repair the disc on its own.

Causes of Degenerative Disc Disease

Repetitive activities that cause micro-tears in the outer core of the disc (annulus fibrosis) are just as common as acute injures. This can be perplexing to patients, as one day they feel fine and the next day their back “goes out.”

In reality, the problem has been building until a minor twist of the waist creates massive back and hip pain. In contrast, an acute injury that shears the disc and causes the nucleus pulposus to be expelled into the central canal or spinal nerve foramen happens in one incident. These issues can also lead to nerve damage putting you at risk for developing neuropathy.

Degenerative Disc Disease Symptoms

Symptoms are most common in the lumbar spine (low back) or cervical spine (neck). The most common symptoms are:

Mild to severe pain

Pain that affects the low back, buttocks and thighs

Neck pain that radiates into the arms and hands

Pain worsened by sitting

Pain worsened by lifting or bending and twisting of the waist

Walking or moving reduces pain

Less pain by laying down or by changing positions often

Pain that comes and goes, lasting a few days to a few months

Numbness and tingling in arms and hands

Numbness and tingling in the thighs, legs, and feet

Weakness in the leg or arm muscles (caused by nerve root damage)

Now that we’ve covered some of the basics, let’s get into treatment options.

Treatment of Degenerative Disc Disease: 3 Non-Surgical Treatments

There are many ways that degenerative disc disease can be treated. And while surgery is one of the options, we always recommend non-surgical treatments first (unless surgery is absolutely necessary).

Check with your doctor before pursuing any treatment for degenerative disc disease.

Here are three non-surgical treatment options to look into.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Non-surgical spinal decompression slowly decompresses and relaxes your spine by cycling through relaxation and distraction phases. During your non-surgical spinal decompression session, downward forces of gravity are removed, creating negative intradiscal pressure and a vacuum effect. The cycles of distraction and relaxation promote the diffusion of oxygen, water, and nutrient-dense fluids from the outside to flow back into your disks. These nutrients enable the torn and degenerated disc fibers to begin to heal.

At Intouch Chiropractic, our patients see results quickly after partaking in non-surgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000.

“I’ve been a chiropractic patient for over 20 years, and I absolutely love the doctors and the amazing staff at Intouch Chiropractic! With gentle and painless adjustments, spinal decompression and laser therapy, I have gotten more relief than ever! I highly recommend this team, especially if you are new to chiropractic or trying to avoid surgery.” – Intouch Chiropractic Spinal Decompression Review by Amanda H.

Lifestyle Modifications and Pain Management

Weight management and avoiding strenuous activities reduce spinal stress. Low-impact aerobic exercises like swimming or cycling improve blood flow to damaged discs while minimizing strain. For pain management, heat and cold therapy can be a helpful tool. Ice packs reduce inflammation while heat alleviates tension.

Physical Therapy

Customized programs strengthen core muscles, enhance posture, and restore mobility. Techniques include guided stretching, resistance training, and ergonomic adjustments to protect the spine during daily activities.

Degenerative Disc Disease Treatments in Conclusion

While surgery may be required for serious cases, there are several non-surgical treatments for degenerative disc disease. At the Intouch Chiropractic office in San Diego, CA, we regularly see patients who suffer from this disease. We also see them make tremendous progress.

Spinal stenosis is a health condition that affects the abnormal narrowing of your spinal canal. Dealing with this health issue can be painful and scary, and may include pain, numbness or weakness. While dealing with spinal stenosis is difficult, there are treatments that can help! And that includes non-surgical spinal stenosis treatments.

If you are wondering if you have spinal stenosis or are curious about treatments for it, you’re in the right place. In this blog post, we’ll answer the basic question of “what is spinal stenosis”, and discuss treatment options that include non-surgical interventions.

First, let’s give an overview of what spinal stenosis actually is.

So, What is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis relates to an abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal. This narrowing directly impacts the amount of space in your spinal cord and can occur in any part of the spine. It is most common in the cervical spine and the lumbar spine.

The decreasing amount of space in the spinal cord as a result of spinal stenosis means that nerve roots, nerves and even your spinal cord can be compressed or squeezed. Patients we see at Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, California report feeling numbness, pain and weakness as the major symptoms of their spinal stenosis.

Spinal stenosis is often associated with aging, and in older patients it can greatly reduce mobility and quality of life.

However, there are effective treatments for spinal stenosis. Surgery is one treatment that people suffering from this health issue opt for, but we only recommend surgery as a last resort. Before we get into the treatments available for spinal stenosis though, let’s quickly cover the causes of spinal stenosis.

Cause of Spinal Stenosis

The primary cause of spinal stenosis is osteoarthritis (OA). In other words, the cause of spinal stenosis is not a single disease, but, a variety of disorders, mostly leading to the structural or functional failure of one or more of your joints. Spinal stenosis as a result of osteoarthritis involves the entire joint, including adjacent muscles, underlying bone, ligaments, joint lining (synovium), and the joint capsule.

Next, let’s dive into the treatment options available for individuals who are suffering from spinal stenosis.

Spinal Stenosis Treatments:

It should be noted that there is no way to fully cure spinal stenosis. But there are ways to treat it and techniques that can be used to reduce spinal stenosis symptoms. Here are some of the most common forms of treatment:

Over-the-counter pain medications

Hot/cold therapy

Anti-inflammatory medications, including oral cortisone medications

Epidural steroid (cortisone) injections

Physical therapy

Chiropractic care

Along with Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Lastly, Surgery

As always, we recommend that a patient seek all forms of care and treatment prior to surgery. However, there are cases where surgery for spinal stenosis is necessary. For example, if the spinal cord is compromised, surgery may be the necessary treatment.

Now, let’s dive deeper into three treatment options for spinal stenosis. To start, let’s cover one of the non-surgical treatments we recommend exploring before moving onto invasive surgery.

Dr. Jeanett Tapia works with a patient suffering from spinal stenosis at the Intouch Chiropractic office

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression for Spinal Stenosis

One of the most successful and least invasive spinal stenosis treatments is one we use at Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego: non-surgical spinal decompression. Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD) slowly relaxes and stretches your spine. Meanwhile, it removes the downward forces of gravity and creates a vacuum effect that allows oxygen and nutrients to flow back into your discs.

This FDA-cleared procedure is gentle, effective and painless. Also, it is highly effective when done safely within established protocols. Spinal Decompression treatment provides powerful chronic lower back pain relief and amplifies the healing process when treating issues such as spinal stenosis. Our patients have often found relief after failing other treatments.

Our office has a great track record for helping our patients get out of pain. Along with using a dual, revolutionary approach; we combine the most advanced technology and gentle, upper cervical chiropractic techniques (NUCCA) to help you get better faster.

Learn more about how we treat spinal stenosis at Intouch Chiropractic at our website.

Can you fix spinal stenosis without surgery?

Non-surgical interventions can not 100% cure spinal stenosis. The anatomical cause of this health issue will remain. However, unless you are suffering from a severe case of spinal stenosis, non-surgical treatments may be enough for you to manage and alleviate pain. We always recommend investigating whether or not your case is suitable for non-surgical spinal stenosis treatment. But in severe cases, surgery may be required.

Next, let’s quickly cover spinal stenosis surgery and what to expect.

Low Back Surgery for Spinal Stenosis

Patients with increasing muscle weakness and severe spinal cord compression, aka myelopathy, should consider surgery to help prevent permanent nerve damage. If you are suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis, this is what you’ll be researching more.

The goal of surgery is to physically create more space and relieve compression of the spinal cord and its nerves. One of the surgical options available is surgical decompression. This surgery removes bone and/or tissues.

In the lumbar spine, the most common surgical decompression procedure is a laminectomy. This surgery removes a portion of your bone, (the lamina) to create additional space for the cord and its nerves. However, if too much bone needs to be removed, a spinal fusion is needed to stabilize your spine.

Neck Surgery for Spinal Stenosis

The most common spinal stenosis surgery is an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). Firstly, the spinal disc gets removed between two vertebrae. In addition, any bone spurs pushing on the nerves or spinal cord are also be removed. Then a bone graft will replace the disc. A metal plate will attach to the front of your vertebrae to help the bone grow together or fuse. After the bone(s) is removed, a bone graft replaces them along with a plate.

Cervical spinal stenosis is treated surgically from the back of the neck. Similarly to the lumbar spine, a laminectomy will need to be performed. This procedure fuses one cervical vertebra to an adjacent cervical vertebra. This procedure prevents abnormal movement or instability. In addition, Laminoplasty can also be a surgical option for cervical stenosis. This neck surgery involves creating more space in the back of the spinal canal by opening the back of the spine like a door, and leaving it open with a combination of bone grafts or plates.

However, in severe cases, prolonged compression of the nerves can cause permanent nerve damage that not even surgery can reverse. Therefore, something to keep in mind is that back surgery is invasive. Also, specific post-operative management is crucial for long-term success.

“Very pleased with my results after 10 weeks of treatment. Personable, attentive and welcoming staff & docs! Would highly recommend.” – Intouch Chiropractic Review by Ality R.

What Is the Prognosis for Spinal Stenosis After Treatment?

Many patients get relief of their spinal stenosis symptoms with non-surgical treatment. Although, every case is different. For patients with advanced stenosis, surgery may be the only option. Therefore, one thing to keep in mind is that arthritis of the spine is progressive even after surgery. As a result, it is not uncommon to develop new symptoms years after surgery. These symptoms can show up either at the same level or at nearby levels requiring a second or third surgery.

Are you suffering from back pain and looking for a non-invasive treatment option? Spinal decompression treatment might be the answer you’ve been seeking.

In this article, we will explore the benefits of spinal decompression and provide you with all the information you need to know about this innovative treatment.

First, what is spinal decompression?

What is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression is a non-invasive therapeutic technique that aims to alleviate pressure and tension on the spine. It is designed to gently stretch and elongate the spine, creating negative pressure within the spinal discs. This negative pressure can help retract bulging or herniated discs, allowing them to return to their normal position and relieving the pressure on surrounding nerves.

Unlike invasive procedures like surgery, spinal decompression is a non-surgical, drug-free approach that many patients find appealing.

This form of chiropractic treatment has many benefits, especially when spinal decompression is compared to back surgery. Next, let’s get into some of the main benefits reported by patients who have done this treatment at our San Diego office.

5 Major Benefits of Spinal Decompression Therapy

One of the main benefits of spinal decompression is its ability to target the source of the pain and not just the symptoms. By decompressing the spine, it creates negative pressure, which helps retract herniated discs and allows the surrounding tissues to receive essential nutrients, oxygen, and fluid.

In addition to reducing pain, spinal decompression can improve flexibility, increase range of motion, and restore overall spinal health. It is a safe and effective treatment option that can often provide long-lasting relief for those suffering from chronic back pain.

Spinal decompression therapy offers a wide range of benefits for individuals suffering from various spinal conditions.

Here are some of the key benefits of this non-invasive treatment:

Pain Relief: One of the primary benefits of spinal decompression is its ability to alleviate back and neck pain. By reducing pressure on the spinal discs and surrounding nerves, the therapy can provide significant and lasting pain relief for patients suffering from conditions such as herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, and sciatica.

Disc Rehydration and Repair: The negative pressure created during spinal decompression can help draw in nutrients, oxygen, and fluids to the spinal discs, promoting rehydration and healing. This process can help to reverse the effects of disc degeneration and, in some cases, even facilitate the repair of damaged discs.

Improved Flexibility and Range of Motion: As the spine is gently stretched and decompressed, patients often experience an increase in flexibility and range of motion. This can lead to improved mobility, reduced stiffness, and a better overall quality of life.

Reduced Need for Medication: By addressing the root cause of the problem, spinal decompression therapy can help reduce the need for pain medication or other temporary solutions. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals who wish to avoid the potential side effects or long-term dependence on medication.

Non-Invasive and Drug-Free: Spinal decompression is a non-surgical, drug-free treatment option, making it an appealing choice for individuals who want to avoid the risks and recovery time associated with more invasive procedures, such as spinal surgery.

Now that we’ve covered some of the main benefits reported by our patients who have tried spinal decompression, let’s quickly cover a few of the potential risks and side effects associated with spinal decompression treatment.

“I was struggling with lower back weakness and pain until I learned of spinal decompression. I was able to do a 2 week vacation recently with none of my original issues! Both Drs at Intouch are great!” – Intouch Chiropractic Spinal Decompression Review by Robin K.

Risks and Potential Side Effects of Spinal Decompression

Spinal decompression therapy is generally considered a safe and well-tolerated treatment option, with a low risk of serious side effects.

However, as with any medical procedure, there are some potential risks and side effects that patients should be aware of.

Here are some of the potential risks associated with spinal decompression therapy that we forecast to our patients at Intouch Chiropractic:

Muscle Soreness: Some patients may experience mild muscle soreness or discomfort following a spinal decompression session, similar to the feeling after a workout. This is typically a temporary side effect and can be managed with rest, ice, or over-the-counter pain medication.

Increased Pain: In rare cases, spinal decompression may temporarily worsen the patient’s pain or symptoms. This is usually a sign that the treatment is targeting the underlying issue and should be discussed with the healthcare provider.

Headaches: Some patients may experience headaches or dizziness during or after a spinal decompression session. This is often due to the changes in pressure and spinal alignment and should be reported to the healthcare provider.

Bruising or Skin Irritation: In some cases, the harness or straps used during the decompression process may cause minor bruising or skin irritation. This can typically be managed with proper padding or adjustments to the equipment.

Aggravation of Existing Conditions: Patients with certain pre-existing medical conditions, such as severe osteoporosis, spinal fractures, or certain types of cancer, may not be suitable candidates for spinal decompression therapy. It’s important to disclose all relevant medical information to the healthcare provider.

It’s important to note that the risks and potential side effects of spinal decompression are generally mild and manageable.

Patients should always communicate any concerns or discomfort to their healthcare provider, who can make adjustments to the treatment plan or recommend alternative therapies if necessary.

Finally, let’s wrap up this post by describing the alternative treatments to spinal decompression treatment that our patients find themselves deciding between when seeking to relieve pressure and alleviate pain.

5 Alternatives to Spinal Decompression Therapy

While spinal decompression therapy is a highly effective treatment option for many individuals suffering from spinal conditions, it may not be the right choice for everyone.

In some cases, alternative or complementary therapies may be more appropriate or beneficial.

Some of the alternatives to spinal decompression include:

Chiropractic Adjustments: Chiropractic care focuses on the alignment and proper functioning of the spine, and can be a valuable complement to spinal decompression therapy. Chiropractors use manual adjustments to restore proper spinal alignment and improve overall spinal health. At Intouch Chiropractic, we make use of NUCCA chiropractic techniques that successfully help our patients find relief from chronic back pain and neck pain.

Physical Therapy: A comprehensive physical therapy program can help address the underlying causes of back and neck pain, such as muscle imbalances, poor posture, or limited range of motion. Physical therapists may use a combination of exercises, stretches, and manual techniques to improve spinal function and reduce pain.

Acupuncture: This traditional Chinese medicine practice involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of energy and promote healing. Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in reducing pain and improving overall spinal health.

Pain Medication: In some cases, over-the-counter or prescription pain medication may be used in conjunction with spinal decompression therapy to provide additional relief and manage symptoms. However, it’s important to use medication responsibly and under the guidance of a healthcare provider.

Surgery: For individuals with severe or complex spinal conditions that do not respond to more conservative treatments, spinal surgery may be recommended. Procedures such as disc replacement or spinal fusion may be considered in these cases.

It’s important to note that the choice of alternative or complementary therapies will depend on the individual’s specific condition, overall health, and personal preferences. A healthcare provider can help determine the most appropriate treatment plan based on the patient’s unique needs and goals.

Spinal Decompression Therapy Benefits in Conclusion

As you can see, the decision to pursue spinal decompression therapy to deal with neck and back pain comes with many benefits. While risks do exist, as with any therapy, the risks associated with this chiropractic care technique are much less serious than those associated with something like back surgery.

Sports injuries, particularly those affecting the neck and back, can be a major setback for athletes. Traditionally, painkillers, muscle relaxants, and even cortisone shots have been used to manage such injuries.

However, these options may only provide temporary relief and come with potential side effects. Back surgery, while sometimes necessary, should be considered as a last resort due to its invasive nature and lengthy recovery process.

Fortunately, Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, California offers a safe, well-tolerated, and effective alternative for athletes with sports-related neck and back injuries. This therapy, called spinal decompression, is non-invasive and highly effective in dealing with new or chronic pain as a result of sports injuries.

In this blog post, we’ll cover the many benefits of non-surgical spinal decompression as a rehabilitation tool for sports injuries. Read on as we highlight its effectiveness in treating conditions like disc bulges, disc herniations, sciatica symptoms, facet arthrosis, and more.

First, let’s start by explaining spinal decompression, before we get into how it can be an effective tool in dealing with common sports injuries.

Understanding Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a cutting-edge technology that gently stretches and decompresses the spine to alleviate pressure on the affected discs and nerves.

This process creates a negative pressure within the disc, allowing nutrients and oxygen to flow in, promoting healing and reducing inflammation.

By targeting the specific level of the vertebral injury, non-surgical spinal decompression provides athletes with a safe and effective option for managing their sports-related neck and back injuries.

So, if you are struggling with major or minor injuries to your neck or back as a result of a sports injury, spinal decompression may be the tool you need to heal the injured area.

Next, let’s cover some of the main benefits our many patients report when they undergo treatment with our spinal decompression therapy program.

Benefits of Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression for Sports Injuries

We see many patients who have sustained injuries from their favorite sport.

Here are some of the biggest benefits these athletes have told us about their experience with spinal decompression at Intouch Chiropractic:

Enhanced Athletic Performance: Non-surgical spinal decompression can help athletes recover from neck and back injuries faster, allowing them to quickly regain their strength, flexibility, and mobility.

Drug-Free Pain Relief: For athletes dealing with sports-related neck and back injuries, relying on pain medications may lead to dependency and unwanted side effects. Non-surgical spinal decompression offers a drug-free approach to managing pain, reducing the need for long-term medication use.

Shorter Recovery Time: Athletes value quick recovery to resume training and competition. Non-surgical spinal decompression accelerates the healing process, leading to shorter recovery times compared to invasive surgical procedures.

Minimized Risk of Re-Injury: Through targeted treatment to the injured area, non-surgical spinal decompression and chiropractic care help athletes strengthen their spine and reduce the risk of future injuries. This prevention-focused approach empowers athletes to perform at their best while minimizing the chances of setbacks.

Personalized Treatment Plans: Each athlete’s injury is unique, requiring a tailored approach to rehabilitation. Our doctors work directly with you to offer individualized treatment plans. This high level of care and attention ensures that the athletes we see receive the specific care they need for optimal recovery and performance.

Promotes Healing: By increasing blood flow and nutrient supply to the injured area, non-surgical spinal decompression enhances the body’s natural healing process. This accelerates recovery time and reduces the downtime for athletes.

Safe and Well-Tolerated: Non-surgical spinal decompression is a gentle therapy that avoids the trauma associated with surgery. Athletes experience zero to minimal discomfort during the procedure, making it a well-tolerated option.

Now that we’ve gone over the main benefits our patients report when treating sports injuries with spinal decompression, let’s quickly go over some of the long-term risks associated with other treatments.

The Dangers of Long-Term Pain Management Medications and Surgery

While painkillers, muscle relaxants, and cortisone shots may reduce pain temporarily, long-term use of these medications can have adverse effects on an athlete’s health and cause further harm.

Over time, dependency on pain medications can develop, leading to addiction and other complications. Muscle relaxants can cause drowsiness, affecting an athlete’s performance and cognitive function.

Furthermore, back surgery is a significant decision that comes with inherent risks and a prolonged recovery process. For athletes, this can mean extended time away from training and competition, potentially impacting their careers.

Visit our blog comparing spinal decompression and back surgery to learn more.

Finally, let’s wrap up this post talking about how our expert chiropractors are perfectly suited to help you heal from most sports injuries.

The Expertise of Chiropractors in Sports Injury Management

Chiropractors specializing in non-surgical spinal decompression are experts in diagnosing and treating sports-related neck and back injuries.

With in-depth knowledge of the musculoskeletal system, chiropractors provide individualized treatment plans that address the specific needs of each athlete. They focus on restoring the spine’s alignment, promoting healing, and helping athletes regain their strength and mobility.

That’s what you’ll experience when you work with Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, California.

Our doctors at Intouch Chiropractic are physically active themselves and can personally relate to their patients dealing with sports injuries. They work closely with their patients to ensure they receive the most effective and appropriate care for their sports injuries.

“After seeing a plethora of chiropractors in town, I decided to give InTouch a try since I was interested in doing spinal decompression. They have a lovely office and amazing staff, and I really appreciate the warm welcome that I receive from Amanda and Carolina when I arrive for my appointments. Dr. Tapia also shared some great nutrition tips and other ideas to help reset my circadian rhythm to help improve my sleep hygiene. I just started coming in August, but I’m hopeful that after I complete my series of treatments that I will have a decrease in my pain and improved sleep. I would definitely give them a try. Thank you for the great experience!” – Intouch Chiropractic Spinal Decompression Review by Bodie C.

Spinal Decompression as a Sports Injury Treatment in Conclusion

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a valuable rehabilitation tool for athletes with sports-related neck and back injuries.

Getting into a car accident can be terrifying. Whether you find yourself injured or not in the immediate aftermath, making sure your health is good is the most important thing to do after a car accident.

In this blog post, we’ll cover car accidents and injury, and how

This post was written by a guest blogger. Martha de Forest is a dual degree engineer and certified integrative hypnotherapist. She has been married for over 30 years and has raised two daughters.

About 25 years ago I came upon an accident on a windy mountain road. I had a helpless feeling of not knowing what to do as the second person on the scene. Even though the injuries appeared minor, the situation led me to taking CPR and Advanced First Aid training.

My instructor was an experienced EMT who had responded to many accidents on a stretch of road used by the 100MileClub. On that road, motorcyclists would attempt to run a 100 mile mountain course in one hour.

On one trip, a cyclist wrecked. When help came he was up and about, talking, and in a bit of a daze. He was asked for his ID and as he turned to reach for his ID, he dropped dead! Yes, this story is definitely a bit dramatic, but this story impressed upon me the dangers of hidden injuries. His neck was broken and he didn’t know it. In fact, it is common for a cervical collar to be placed on an accident victim as a precaution. Just in case!

When we get into accidents, it’s easy to downplay our injuries. But that ultimately can work against us. Also, most insurance companies want people to visit their doctor within 48 hours of an accident. This helps rule out whiplash, concussions, fractures, bruising, sprains, strains, facet syndrome etc.

The sooner you seek care, the better your health outcomes.

It’s common in our workaholic culture to take an anti-inflammatory or pain medication in order to get on with life. However, that may be the very thing that exacerbates any new issues down the road. First, masking pain will give you the impression that your injuries are less severe and don’t need to be addressed. Second, an anti-inflammatory will work against the body’s attempt to stabilize your injury.

So, with this in mind, here is a suggested checklist for post-accident care.

What to Do After a Vehicle Accident

If you’ve been in an accident and are wondering what you should do next, here are some suggestions to consider (note that this is not medical advice. We always recommend seeking the help of a professional before pursuing any type of treatment).

See a health professional for an assessment of possible injuries such as whiplash, concussions, or sprains within 48 hours.

Drink plenty of water.

Get sleep. (If there has been a head injury, follow professional advice!)

Eat for optimal healing.

Avoid anti-inflammatories and/or painkillers that may mask issues and hamper healing.

If anti-inflammatories and/or painkillers are prescribed, be sure to avoid any strenuous activity so the body can heal.

If you or your loved ones are in accident, get checked out right away. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

For some car accident injuries, the help of a vehicle accident chiropractor may help relieve pain and speed up recovery. To view the main injuries chiropractors treat, like at the Intouch Chiropractic office in San Diego, CA, view our list of conditions we treat. You can also view the tools and practices we use to treat patients.

If you would like to have a consultation as a result of car accident injuries, schedule a consultation today.

Herniated discs are a leading cause of neck and back pain. This problem often includes risk factors such as lifting heavy objects, repetitive bending or twisting motions. Other factors that contribute to herniated discs may be smoking, being overweight, or sitting for long periods of time.

A herniated disc can become worse over time if left untreated. This is especially true if you continue with the activities or movements that initially triggered the problem.

Chiropractors are skilled professionals who offer a variety of treatments that can help relieve your pain and get you on the road to healing.

At Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, CA, we regularly (and successfully) treat herniated discs.

“I’ve been getting spine decompression here for the last few months and it helped tremendously with easing the pain from my herniated disc, I had so much tension from the injury that I was taking muscle relaxers often. Along with adjustments and miracle of modern medicine I’ve gained about 80% normalcy back and the pain in my spine is gone, I’ll probably never be at 100% due to degenerative bone issues but the work they did gave me my freedom to take the dog out on walks without pain, beach and hiking days. Customer service is also amazing me and Grace had wonderful chats, both Dr Jeanett and Dr Young were very compassionate and attentive I highly recommend having them as part of anyone’s care team. Thank you Intouch for helping me get back on my feet.” – Herniated Disc Treatment at Intouch Review by Sam N.

What is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc is a problem related to one of the discs or rubbery cushions that sits between the vertebrae that make up your spine. When some of the jellylike center of your spinal disc is pushed out through a tear of the disc’s rubbery exterior a herniated disc will occur.

A herniated disc can occur in any portion of your spine but is most common in the lower back. It can result in numbness, pain, or weakness in your arm or leg.

Next, let’s get into if chiropractic care is good for treating herniated discs.

Is Chiropractic Care Good for Herniated Discs?

Chiropractors offer a variety of non-invasive treatments that can relieve the symptoms of a herniated or slipped disc.

Here are a two of the things you can expect from a chiropractor to help alleviate your pain and discomfort when dealing with this painful condition.

Assess Your Overall Condition

The first thing a chiropractor will do is evaluate the overall health of your spine. They will also go over your complete medical history as well as perform a physical exam. They will be looking for any numbness, normal reflexes, as well as a decrease in muscle strength and mass.

If your chiropractor feels you are a suitable candidate for chiropractic care, they will recommend you for the appropriate treatment methods.

Recommend and Perform Chiropractic Treatments for Disc Herniations

Depending on the findings in your initial exam, your chiropractor will customize a treatment plan for your specific needs. Two examples of how Intouch Chiropractic helps patients is with the chiropractic therapy called NUCCA Spinal Care, and the implementation of spinal decompression therapy.

Now that we’ve covered a few of the ways chiropractic treatment can be beneficial when dealing with herniated discs, let’s get into some of the other questions people dealing with chronic pain from a herniated disc might have.

San Diego patient uses the spinal decompression machine to treat a herniated disc

Herniated Disc FAQs

Here are six questions relating to herniated discs that our patients regularly have.

Can You See a Herniated Disc on an X-Ray?

Many times a herniated disc can be detected by a physical exam and a review of your medical history. X-rays are helpful, and may be beneficial in ruling out other issues such as spinal alignment issues, broken bones, or infection.

Other imaging tests such as an MRI or a Myelogram are are oftentimes used to diagnose the cause of your back pain.

How should I sleep if I have a herniated disc?

We advise against sleeping on your stomach as it can be hard on your spine. It strains your ligaments, vertebrae, and muscles in your neck and can result in increased lower back pain. Sleeping on your stomach can alter the natural curve of your spine.

With that said, the best position for sleeping when you have a herniated disc is in a position that allows the spine to keep its natural curvature. Even if you prefer sleeping on your stomach, sleeping on your back may be the smartest sleeping position to choose for a herniated disc.

If lying on your back is too painful, slide a pillow under your knees and lower back.

If you are a side sleeper, we recommend placing a pillow in between your knees to alleviate hip pain.

How Long Does a Herniated Disc Take to Heal Itself?

For the majority of people, the chronic pain from a herniated disc will go away within 6-9 months.

Can a Herniated Disc Cause Permanent Nerve Damage?

The answer is yes. Herniated discs can eventually lead to permanent nerve damage if they are not properly treated. However, this is only the result in very rare cases.

The herniated disc can cut off nerve impulses to the cauda equina nerves that are in your legs and lower back. This could lead to loss of bladder or bowel control.

Although this may sound scary, symptoms can improve and herniated discs can heal. If you feel pain while performing movements or activities you once enjoyed, it’s time to seek help from a healthcare professional.

What is the Difference Between Disc Herniation and Disc Protrusion?

It’s easy to confuse one back ailment with another when you aren’t in the medical field. However, when people talk about disc herniation and disc protrusion, they are talking about the same thing. They are both referring to the process when the nucleus pushes completely through the annulus and squeezes out of the disc. It may be helpful to note that if a piece of the disc breaks off, it’s referred to as a sequestered fragment and will nearly always result in surgery.

Do massages make herniated discs worse?

While massage therapy may not fully heal your herniated disc, it can assist in the rehabilitation process. When practiced on surrounding tissue, a proper massage can increase blood circulation while improving range of motion and flexibility.

However, massaging directly on the actual herniated disc may aggravate your condition and increase your pain, so be careful. Focusing on the muscles on either side of the spine gives the injured area the best possible chance to heal on its own.

Chiropractic Care and Herniated Disc Conclusion

The majority of people with herniated discs will heal on their own over time. However, if you are in large amounts of pain and feel you are restricted from performing life’s basic tasks, take action. Our trained doctors at Intouch Chiropractic offer non-invasive treatments that can assist in alleviating the pain associated with herniated discs. Our non-invasive treatments can help you avoid spinal surgery and speed up your recovery time.

Our skilled staff is known as the best in the San Diego area. We have an extremely diverse clientele who suffer from a variety of ailments. Let us customize a treatment plan for you to get you feeling better and back on track.

How Chiropractic Care and Spinal Decompression Relieve Sciatica

Sciatica can be a painful condition that slows people down, whether they’re working, exercising, or just enjoying life. If you’re dealing with pain that runs from your lower back down one leg, chiropractic care and spinal decompression can help. In this post, we’ll explain how these treatments work and what you can expect. Whether you’re experiencing sciatica or have experienced sciatica in the past, this information will show you how relief might be closer than you think.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica happens when the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in your body, gets irritated or pinched. This nerve starts in your lower back and runs through your hips, buttocks, and down each leg. People with sciatica often feel:

Pain in the lower back, hip, or leg

Tingling or numbness in the leg

Weakness in the affected leg or foot

The pain can range from mild discomfort to sharp, shooting pain that makes it hard to move. Often, sciatica happens because of a herniated disc, which presses on the nerve, or due to muscle tightness around the nerve.

How Chiropractors Help with Sciatica

Chiropractors are trained to find the root cause of sciatica. They focus on realigning your spine, which can take pressure off the sciatic nerve. These gentle adjustments help restore normal movement and function. Here are two key ways chiropractic care helps:

Spinal Adjustments
Chiropractors use their hands or tools to adjust the spine and joints. These adjustments help relieve pressure on nerves, reduce inflammation, and improve your body’s ability to heal itself. When the spine is aligned properly, you’re less likely to feel pain caused by pinched or irritated nerves.

Posture and Mobility Advice
If poor posture or sitting too much is adding to your sciatic pain, your chiropractor will give you tips to improve how you move and sit. They may also recommend stretches or exercises to strengthen your back and core muscles, which reduces your risk of future pain.

What is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression therapy gently stretches the spine to relieve pressure on the discs and nerves. This can help herniated or bulging discs return to their normal position, taking the pressure off the sciatic nerve.

Here’s what happens during a spinal decompression session:

You lie on a table, and the DRX9000 spinal decompression technology slowly stretches your spine.

This creates space between the discs and allows nutrients to flow into the injured area, speeding up healing.

The session is painless, and most patients find it relaxing enough to take a nap.

Why Chiropractic Care Works for Sciatica

Chiropractic care and spinal decompression work well together because they treat both the symptoms and the cause of sciatica. Adjustments reduce nerve irritation, while decompression helps fix disc issues. Together, these therapies improve your mobility, reduce pain, and prevent future flare-ups.

Is Chiropractic Care Right for You?

If you’re tired of dealing with sciatic pain, chiropractic care is a great option. It’s non-invasive, drug-free, and focuses on helping your body heal naturally. Whether you’re a current patient or new to chiropractic care, ask us about adding spinal decompression to your treatment plan. Relief from sciatica might just be a few treatments away!

With the right care, sciatica doesn’t have to hold you back. Chiropractic care combined with spinal decompression offers a safe and effective way to get back to doing the things you love—without pain. Want expert help?
Sciatica Treatment in San Diego, CA

How Chiropractic Care Can Relieve Your Pain

Sciatica is a painful condition that affects millions of people, causing discomfort that can range from mild to severe. If you’re living in San Diego and suffering from sciatica, chiropractic care can offer a non-invasive, drug-free solution to help relieve your pain and restore your mobility. At Intouch Chiropractic, we specialize in treating sciatica and helping patients get back to living pain-free lives.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down to your legs, becomes irritated or compressed. This can lead to symptoms such as:

Sharp pain radiating down one or both legs

Numbness or tingling in the legs or feet

Muscle weakness in the lower extremities

Difficulty standing or sitting for long periods

The root cause of sciatica can vary, including herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or even muscle imbalances. Fortunately, chiropractic care can target the underlying issues causing your sciatic pain, providing long-term relief.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help with Sciatica

At our San Diego chiropractic office, we take a holistic approach to sciatica treatment, focusing on addressing the root cause of your pain rather than simply masking the symptoms. Our specialized treatment plans include:

Spinal Adjustments: By realigning the spine, chiropractic adjustments can relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve and reduce inflammation, helping you experience pain relief.

Massage Therapy: Therapeutic massage can relax tight muscles that may be contributing to sciatic nerve irritation.

Decompression Therapy: This technique gently stretches the spine, creating more space between the vertebrae and allowing for better nerve function.

Corrective Exercises: Strengthening and stretching exercises are often prescribed to improve posture, support spinal health, and prevent future episodes of sciatica.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Sciatica in San Diego

Living in San Diego offers an active lifestyle, but sciatica can hold you back from enjoying everything our beautiful city has to offer. Whether you’re hiking in Torrey Pines or walking along La Jolla Shores, you need a body that can move pain-free. Chiropractic care can provide the following benefits:

Drug-Free Pain Relief: Chiropractic care treats sciatica without relying on pain medications, helping you avoid potential side effects.

Personalized Treatment Plans: Our chiropractors will develop a custom treatment plan based on your unique needs and health goals.

The importance of finding the right chiropractor

Selecting the right chiropractor is a crucial decision that can have a significant impact on your overall health and well-being. Chiropractic care is a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on the alignment and function of the spine, which is the foundation of the body’s nervous system. When your spine is in proper alignment, it allows your body to function at its optimal level, reducing pain, improving mobility, and enhancing your overall quality of life.

However, not all chiropractors are created equal. Each practitioner has their own unique approach, qualifications, and level of expertise. Finding a chiropractor who is the right fit for your specific needs can mean the difference between experiencing life-changing relief or continued discomfort. By taking the time to research and evaluate potential chiropractors, you can ensure that you receive the highest quality of care and achieve the best possible outcomes for your health.

Whether you are seeking relief from chronic pain, recovering from an injury, or simply looking to improve your overall well-being, the right chiropractor can be a valuable asset in your healthcare journey. By understanding the importance of finding the right chiropractor, you can take the first step towards a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Understanding chiropractic care

Chiropractic care is a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on the alignment and function of the spine, which is the foundation of the body’s nervous system. Chiropractors use a variety of techniques, including manual adjustments, to address issues related to the musculoskeletal system, such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, and joint discomfort.

The underlying principle of chiropractic care is that the body has an innate ability to heal itself when the nervous system is functioning properly. By restoring the alignment of the spine, chiropractors aim to reduce nerve interference and improve the body’s ability to communicate effectively with all of its systems. This, in turn, can lead to a reduction in pain, improved mobility, and enhanced overall health and well-being.

Chiropractic care is often considered a complementary or alternative form of medicine, as it takes a more holistic approach to healthcare compared to traditional Western medicine. While chiropractors do not prescribe medication or perform surgery, they work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as physical therapists and primary care physicians, to provide a comprehensive and integrated approach to patient care.

Signs that you may need chiropractic treatment

There are a variety of signs and symptoms that may indicate the need for chiropractic treatment. Some of the most common include:

Neck pain or stiffness: Neck pain, stiffness, or limited range of motion can be caused by misalignments in the cervical spine, which can be addressed through chiropractic adjustments.

Headaches or migraines: Tension headaches and migraines can often be traced back to issues with the spine, particularly the upper cervical region. Chiropractic care can help alleviate these types of headaches by addressing the underlying cause.

Joint pain or discomfort: Misalignments in the spine can also affect the function of the body’s other joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Chiropractic treatment can help improve joint function and reduce discomfort.

Numbness or tingling: If you are experiencing numbness, tingling, or weakness in your extremities, it may be a sign of nerve interference caused by spinal misalignment. Chiropractic adjustments can help restore proper nerve function and alleviate these symptoms.

If you are experiencing any of these signs or symptoms, it may be time to consider seeking chiropractic care. A qualified chiropractor can perform a comprehensive evaluation and develop a personalized treatment plan to address your specific health needs.

Qualities to look for in a chiropractor

When it comes to finding the right chiropractor, there are several key qualities you should look for to ensure you receive the best possible care. These include:

Education and credentials: Chiropractors must complete a rigorous educational program, including a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree, which typically takes four years to complete. Additionally, they must be licensed in the state in which they practice. Look for a chiropractor who has completed their education from an accredited institution and is licensed to practice in your area.

Experience and specialization: While all chiropractors are trained in the same core principles, some may have additional experience or specialization in certain areas, such as sports injuries, pediatric care, or the treatment of chronic conditions. Consider the chiropractor’s overall experience, as well as any specific areas of expertise that may be relevant to your health needs.

Communication and bedside manner: Effective communication and a positive bedside manner are essential for building trust and ensuring a positive patient experience. Look for a chiropractor who takes the time to listen to your concerns, explains treatments and procedures in a clear and understandable way, and demonstrates a genuine interest in your well-being.

Approach to treatment: Different chiropractors may have varying approaches to treatment, ranging from more traditional manual adjustments to more modern techniques, such as instrument-assisted adjustments or soft tissue therapy. Consider the chiropractor’s treatment philosophy and whether it aligns with your personal preferences and needs.

Facility and equipment: The facility and equipment used by the chiropractor can also be an important factor in your decision-making process. Look for a clean, well-maintained office with modern, state-of-the-art equipment that is appropriate for the type of care you require.

By considering these key qualities, you can increase your chances of finding a chiropractor who is the perfect fit for your health needs and who can provide you with the highest quality of care.

Researching and finding potential chiropractors

Once you have a clear understanding of the qualities you are looking for in a chiropractor, the next step is to begin your research and identify potential candidates. There are several ways to go about this process:

Ask for referrals: Start by asking your primary care physician, physical therapist, or other healthcare providers if they can recommend a reputable chiropractor in your area. They may have personal experience working with certain practitioners or be familiar with their reputations within the healthcare community.

Check online directories: There are a number of online directories and review platforms that can help you find and evaluate chiropractors in your local area. Websites like the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) and Healthgrades allow you to search for chiropractors by location, specialty, and patient ratings.

Search for local chiropractors: You can also conduct a simple online search for chiropractors in your city or town. This can help you identify any local practices or individual practitioners, as well as their websites, which may provide additional information about their qualifications, services, and approach to care.

Consult your insurance provider: If you have health insurance, you may want to check with your provider to see if they have a list of in-network chiropractors or any specific requirements or preferences for chiropractic care. This can help you narrow down your options and ensure that you receive the maximum coverage for your treatment.

Attend community events or open houses: Many chiropractors participate in local community events or host open houses at their practices. Attending these types of events can be a great way to meet potential chiropractors, learn more about their approach to care, and get a feel for the practice’s overall atmosphere and patient experience.

By utilizing a combination of these research methods, you can compile a list of potential chiropractors to consider and begin the process of evaluating their qualifications, experience, and fit for your specific health needs.

Questions to ask during a chiropractic consultation

Once you have identified a few potential chiropractors, the next step is to schedule a consultation or initial appointment. This is your opportunity to ask questions, assess the chiropractor’s approach, and determine if they are the right fit for your healthcare needs. Here are some key questions to consider asking during your consultation:

What is your educational and professional background? Be sure to ask about the chiropractor’s educational credentials, including where they obtained their Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree, as well as any additional certifications or specializations they may have.

How long have you been practicing chiropractic care? Experience is an important factor in determining the quality of care you can expect to receive. Look for a chiropractor who has been practicing for several years and has a track record of successful patient outcomes.

What is your approach to chiropractic care? Different chiropractors may have varying philosophies and techniques when it comes to treatment. Ask the chiropractor to explain their approach and how they determine the appropriate course of action for each patient.

Can you provide a detailed treatment plan and expected outcomes? A good chiropractor should be able to clearly outline a treatment plan, including the number and frequency of visits, and set realistic expectations for the results you can expect to see.

Do you work with other healthcare providers? Chiropractic care is often most effective when it is integrated with a comprehensive healthcare approach. Ask the chiropractor if they collaborate with other professionals, such as physical therapists or primary care physicians, to provide a holistic approach to your care.

What are your office policies and procedures? Be sure to inquire about the chiropractor’s office policies, including appointment scheduling, payment options, and any specific requirements or expectations for patients.

By asking these questions and actively listening to the chiropractor’s responses, you can gain valuable insights into their qualifications, approach to care, and overall fit for your healthcare needs.

Evaluating the chiropractor’s qualifications and experience

Once you have had the opportunity to meet with a potential chiropractor and ask your questions, the next step is to thoroughly evaluate their qualifications and experience. This is a crucial step in the process of finding the right chiropractor for your health needs.

One of the most important factors to consider is the chiropractor’s educational background and credentials. As mentioned earlier, chiropractors must complete a rigorous Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) program, which typically takes four years to complete. Additionally, they must be licensed to practice in the state where they operate. Look for a chiropractor who has graduated from an accredited chiropractic school and is licensed in your state.

In addition to their core education and licensure, it’s also important to consider any additional certifications or specializations the chiropractor may have. Some chiropractors may have additional training in areas such as sports medicine, pediatric care, or the treatment of chronic conditions. These specialized skills can be particularly valuable if they align with your specific health needs.

Another key factor to evaluate is the chiropractor’s overall experience. Look for a practitioner who has been in practice for several years and has a proven track record of successful patient outcomes. Ask about the number of patients they have treated, the types of conditions they commonly address, and any notable achievements or accolades they have received.

It’s also important to consider the chiropractor’s approach to patient care and treatment. Do they take a holistic, patient-centered approach, or do they primarily focus on a specific technique or modality? A good chiropractor should be able to tailor their treatment plan to your individual needs and work collaboratively with you to achieve your health goals.

By thoroughly evaluating the chiropractor’s qualifications, experience, and approach to care, you can make an informed decision and feel confident that you are choosing a practitioner who is the right fit for your health needs.

Low back pain is a prevalent issue affecting many people worldwide. In San Diego, chiropractors have
gained recognition for their innovative and synergistic treatment approaches, offering non-invasive
solutions for those seeking relief from this debilitating condition. Among the array of techniques utilized,
chiropractic care, non-surgical spinal decompression, and cold laser therapy stand out as an effective
trio in managing and alleviating low back pain.

Understanding Low Back Pain

Before we talk about the specifics of these treatments, understanding the underlying causes of low back
pain is crucial. Factors like poor posture, muscle strain, herniated discs, or degenerative conditions can
contribute to this discomfort. Seeking professional help from San Diego chiropractors can pinpoint the
root cause and determine the most suitable treatment plan.

Chiropractic Care for Low Back Pain

Chiropractic care, a cornerstone of pain management, focuses on spinal adjustments to correct
misalignments. In San Diego, skilled chiropractors use tailored adjustments, realigning the spine to
alleviate pressure on nerves and muscles, thereby reducing low back pain.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Complementing chiropractic adjustments, non-surgical spinal decompression is gaining recognition for
treating a variety of spinal conditions, including low back pain, sciatica, spinal stenosis and degenerative
disc disease. Non-surgical spinal decompression is non-invasive and effective in combination with
chiropractic care in treating both neck and low back conditions.

Our clinic provides non-surgical spinal decompression, which gently stretches the spine using the
DRX9000 spinal decompression technology. The DRX9000 is a specialized machine that creates negative
pressure within the discs, promoting the retraction of herniated or bulging discs and improving blood
flow to the affected area. San Diego chiropractors often combine spinal decompression with chiropractic
adjustments for a comprehensive and effective approach to treating low back pain.

Cold Laser Therapy: An Advanced Solution

Cold laser therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a form of photo biomodulation. This
non-invasive treatment option effectively reduces pain and inflammation associated with lower back
symptoms by stimulating cellular activity and enhancing tissue repair. This gentle treatment facilitates
accelerated healing, and improved blood flow. San Diego chiropractors use low-intensity lasers to
stimulate cellular function, reduce inflammation, and enhance tissue repair in the affected area.
Cold laser therapy promotes increased movement and functionality while being a safe adjunctive
therapy that can be seamlessly integrated into comprehensive treatment plans. With its minimal side
effects, lack of downtime, and potential cost-effectiveness compared to invasive procedures, photo
biomodulation stands out as a promising approach for patients seeking relief from chronic or acute low
back pain.

The Synergistic Approach: Maximizing Results

Our San Diego chiropractors often combine these three treatments—chiropractic care, non-surgical
spinal decompression, and cold laser therapy—to create a synergistic effect in treating low back pain. By
addressing various aspects of the condition, this comprehensive approach aims not only to relieve pain
but also to promote healing and restore function.

Why Choose San Diego Chiropractors for Low Back Pain Relief?

San Diego boasts a vibrant healthcare community, and its chiropractors are known for their expertise,
compassion, and dedication to patient-centric care. Our clinic is home to state-of-the-art equipment and
innovative technology. Our patients are looking for modern and effective solutions for their low back
pain symptoms.

Conclusion: Finding Relief in San Diego

San Diego chiropractors offer a compelling solution for those suffering from low back pain. Our doctors
use an integrated and comprehensive approach combining chiropractic care, non-surgical spinal
decompression, and cold laser therapy providing a promising avenue for patients seeking non-invasive
and effective treatments for their low back pain.
