Whether you’re a weekend warrior, competitive athlete, or professional player in San Diego, your body endures significant physical demands that can lead to injury, chronic pain, and diminished performance.

At Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, we’ve seen firsthand how specialized chiropractic care transforms athletic potential by addressing the root causes of musculoskeletal dysfunction rather than simply masking symptoms.

As a sports chiropractor in San Diego, our approach focuses on optimizing spinal alignment, enhancing nervous system function, and creating individualized treatment plans that help athletes prevent injuries before they sideline their training or competition.

The connection between proper spinal alignment and athletic performance is profound. When your spine and upper cervical region are misaligned, nerve signals become compromised, affecting everything from muscle coordination and reaction time to flexibility and recovery speed.

Through our NUCCA chiropractic technique and comprehensive sports medicine approach, we help San Diego athletes achieve peak performance by restoring proper biomechanics, reducing inflammation, and accelerating healing processes.

“I have had multiple injuries over the years and can always count on Intouch Chiropractic to help me heal! Both doctors do amazing work and they always have the latest technology. Their advanced laser therapy is incredible. I feel better already after only 2 visits.” – Intouch Chiropractic review by Elsa G.

In this guide, we’ll explore how chiropractic care serves as a cornerstone of injury prevention, explain the specific benefits for athletes across all sports, and share how our evidence-based methods at Intouch Chiropractic can help you perform at your absolute best while staying injury-free throughout your athletic career.

Why Athletes Need Specialized Chiropractic Care

Athletes place very specific, repetitive demands on their bodies, so their care needs to be just as specialized.

As a sports chiropractor in San Diego at Intouch Chiropractic, we look beyond general spine care to understand how your particular sport, position, and training schedule affect your joints, muscles, and nervous system. This allows us to design targeted plans that support both immediate performance and long-term durability so you can keep training, competing, and progressing with confidence.

Key reasons athletes benefit from specialized chiropractic care include:

Repetitive movements and high-impact forces create joint restrictions and muscle imbalances that need precise assessment and correction instead of one-size-fits-all care.

Proper spinal and upper cervical alignment supports efficient nerve communication, which improves coordination, reaction time, and overall neuromuscular control during sport.

Restoring healthy biomechanics reduces abnormal stress on ligaments, tendons, and cartilage, lowering the risk of overuse injuries and breakdown over a long season.

Regular chiropractic care can enhance range of motion and flexibility, so athletes can move more freely, generate power efficiently, and perform complex movements with less restriction.

Evidence suggests that aligned joints and balanced muscle function contribute to faster recovery after practices, games, and minor injuries, which is critical when training loads are high.

A sports chiropractor can help manage pain without relying on medications, focusing on underlying mechanical issues so athletes can stay clear-headed and compliant with anti-doping rules.

Professional and collegiate teams increasingly use chiropractic as part of integrated sports medicine programs because it helps keep athletes on the field and performing closer to their potential.

Our NUCCA-based approach and advanced diagnostics help us identify subtle misalignments and movement patterns that standard exams can miss, giving San Diego athletes a more precise roadmap for staying healthy and progressing in their sport.

What are the Best Chiropractic Treatments for Athletes?

Athletes need care that does more than just “crack” the spine. Here at Intouch Chiropractic, we combine precise upper cervical work with advanced, noninvasive technologies to help San Diego athletes move better, recover faster, and stay in the game with less reliance on medication or invasive procedures.

Our signature combination of NUCCA upper cervical care, non-surgical spinal decompression, laser therapy, and shockwave therapy allows us to target different layers of an injury, from irritated nerves and discs to stubborn soft tissue, while always keeping your sport and performance goals in mind.

NUCCA Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care

NUCCA is a gentle, highly specific form of upper cervical chiropractic that focuses on correcting subtle misalignments at the top of the neck where the head meets the spine.

For athletes, this area is critical because even a small shift can throw off balance, posture, and body mechanics, which may translate into slower reaction times, poorer coordination, and increased strain on muscles and joints throughout the body. By restoring head and neck alignment without twisting or forceful popping, NUCCA helps optimize nervous system function, which can support better movement patterns, improved body awareness, and more efficient power transfer in sport-specific motions such as swinging, sprinting, cutting, or rotating.

Learn more about NUCCA.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Non-surgical spinal decompression uses a computer-guided traction table to gently create space between the vertebrae and reduce pressure on spinal discs and nerves.

This is especially valuable for athletes who deal with disc bulges, herniations, sciatica, or chronic low back pain from years of lifting, running, or impact, because it addresses the source of nerve irritation rather than just numbing the pain. By improving disc hydration and reducing mechanical stress on the spine, spinal decompression can help athletes tolerate higher training volumes with less flare-up, extend the longevity of their spine, and return more comfortably to movements like deadlifting, jumping, and rotational loading.

Learn more about spinal decompression.

Class IV Laser Therapy

Class IV laser therapy delivers concentrated light energy into tissues to promote circulation, cellular activity, and local healing responses in muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints.

For athletes, this can be a powerful tool to calm stubborn inflammation, reduce pain, and speed tissue repair in problem areas such as knees, shoulders, ankles, and lower backs that take a beating in practice and competition. We often pair laser sessions with NUCCA or decompression to help San Diego athletes bounce back more quickly from acute strains and chronic overuse injuries so they can resume training with less downtime and fewer setbacks.

Learn more about laser therapy.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy uses controlled acoustic waves to stimulate blood flow, break up adhesions, and trigger a healing response in chronically irritated soft tissues.

This treatment is particularly helpful for athletic conditions like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendon issues, and stubborn muscle tightness that has not responded well to stretching or standard therapies. By addressing deep soft tissue problems that limit force production and range of motion, shockwave therapy helps athletes regain confidence in explosive movements, tolerate higher-intensity training, and reduce the risk of recurring flare-ups during their season.

Learn more about shockwave therapy.

Integrated, Athlete-Focused Care

While each treatment has unique benefits, the real power for athletes comes from combining them in a personalized plan that reflects your sport, position, and current injury status. We routinely pair NUCCA adjustments with spinal decompression, laser, or shockwave therapy to support both structural alignment and soft tissue recovery, which is exactly what most active bodies need to perform at their best over the long term.

If you are an athlete in San Diego and want to explore treatment options to keep you at the top of your game, contact Intouch Chiropractic today.

Seasonal allergies can leave you feeling tired, congested, and frustrated. While many people turn to medications for relief, there’s growing interest in natural solutions that address the root causes of allergy symptoms. At Intouch Chiropractic of San Diego, we often hear from patients who are surprised to learn about the connection between chiropractic care and allergy relief.

Here’s how chiropractic care for allergies can help you breathe easier and feel better year-round.

Understanding Allergies and the Nervous System

Allergies occur when your immune system overreacts to substances like pollen, dust, or pet dander. This reaction is closely linked to your nervous system, which controls and coordinates every function in your body—including immune responses. When the nervous system is under stress due to spinal misalignments (subluxations), it can disrupt communication between the brain and the immune system, potentially making allergy symptoms worse.

How Chiropractic Care for Allergies Works

Chiropractic care focuses on correcting misalignments in the spine to restore optimal nervous system function. Here’s how this can benefit allergy sufferers:

Reduces Nervous System Stress: Gentle adjustments, such as NUCCA upper cervical care, help remove interference in the nervous system, allowing your body to better regulate immune responses.

Supports Immune Function: By improving spinal alignment, chiropractic care may enhance your body’s natural ability to fight off allergens and reduce inflammation.

Promotes Overall Wellness: Patients often report improved energy, better sleep, and a greater sense of well-being after regular chiropractic care, all of which support a healthier immune system.

What to Expect at Intouch Chiropractic

At Intouch Chiropractic, we begin with a thorough assessment to identify any spinal misalignments that could be affecting your nervous system and immune health. Our gentle, precise techniques—especially NUCCA care—are safe for all ages and designed to support your body’s natural healing abilities. We also offer lifestyle recommendations to help you minimize allergy triggers and maximize your results.

Is Chiropractic Care for Allergies Right for You?

If you’re looking for a natural approach to managing allergies, chiropractic care may be a valuable addition to your wellness routine. While it’s not a replacement for emergency allergy treatments, many patients find that regular chiropractic care helps reduce the frequency and severity of their symptoms.

“The staff is extremely welcoming! The adjustment process is absolutely painless; you almost won’t feel it. The results are honestly life changing. I cannot express how happy I am to have Dr Young & Dr Tapia as part of my care team. They know me and they care about me. It really matters to have drs like this. Thank you !” – Intouch Chiropractic Review by Elissa C.

How Chiropractic Care Can Improve Sleep

Chiropractic care is based on the principle that spinal health is closely linked to the function of the nervous system. Misalignments in the spine, known as subluxations, can disrupt nerve communication and contribute to issues such as pain, tension, and even sleep disturbances. By correcting these misalignments, chiropractic adjustments help restore proper nervous system function, which is essential for healthy sleep patterns.

Here are some treatments the Intouch Chiropractic team is capable of which have a positive impact on sleep.

Key Chiropractic Treatments for Sleep Problems and Insomnia

Spinal Adjustments: Gentle, precise adjustments are performed to correct spinal misalignments. This can relieve nerve irritation, reduce pain, and promote relaxation—all factors that contribute to better sleep.

Soft Tissue Therapy: Techniques such as massage, myofascial release, and trigger point therapy are used to relax tense muscles and reduce physical discomfort that may interfere with sleep.

Posture and Sleep Position Guidance: A sleep chiropractor will assess your posture and recommend optimal sleep positions and pillow choices to support spinal alignment and minimize nighttime discomfort.

Lifestyle and Sleep Hygiene Counseling: Advice on creating a healthy sleep environment, establishing consistent routines, and managing stress is often included as part of a holistic chiropractic approach.

Why Choose a Sleep Chiropractor?

A sleep chiropractor takes a comprehensive view of your health, looking beyond symptoms to address the root causes of sleep disturbances.
When it comes to chiropractic care, patients often encounter a variety of techniques and philosophies. Two of the most discussed approaches are NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) and regular chiropractic care. Understanding the distinctions between “NUCCA vs regular chiropractic” can help you make an informed decision about your spinal health.

In this blog post, we’ll compare and contrast NUCCA vs traditional chiropractic techniques. Keep reading to learn more.

First, let’s define what regular chiropractic care is.

What is Traditional Chiropractic Care?

Regular chiropractic care, often referred to as traditional or general chiropractic, typically involves manual spinal adjustments throughout the entire spine. These adjustments may include quick, controlled thrusts (sometimes producing a “popping” sound) to restore mobility, reduce pain, and improve function. Regular chiropractors may also use a variety of other techniques, such as soft tissue therapy, stretching, and therapeutic exercises.

Benefits of Regular Chiropractic

Addresses a wide range of musculoskeletal issues

Provides immediate relief for back, neck, and joint pain

Offers a variety of techniques tailored to individual needs

Widely available and recognized

What is NUCCA Chiropractic?

NUCCA chiropractic is a specialized, gentle technique that focuses exclusively on the alignment of the upper cervical spine—specifically, the atlas vertebra at the base of the skull. NUCCA practitioners (like the team at Intouch Chiropractic) use precise measurements and a gentle touch to correct misalignments, aiming to restore balance to the entire spine and nervous system. The adjustment is so subtle that many patients barely feel it, yet it can have profound effects on posture, pain relief, and overall well-being.

Benefits of NUCCA Chiropractic

Extremely gentle and non-invasive

Focuses on the root cause of body imbalance

Suitable for sensitive patients or those who dislike traditional adjustments

Can lead to long-lasting improvements with fewer visits

Key Differences: NUCCA vs Regular Chiropractic

Which Approach is Right for You?

Choosing between NUCCA vs regular chiropractic depends on your specific health concerns, preferences, and comfort level. If you are seeking a gentle, targeted approach that addresses the upper neck and its impact on the whole body, NUCCA is ideal as it helps balance out the entire spine. If you prefer a traditional approach that includes popping, cracking or twisting of your spine, traditional chiropractic may be a better fit.

Degenerative disc disease is a common cause of chronic back and neck pain, affecting millions of people worldwide. As we age, the discs that cushion our vertebrae naturally lose hydration and elasticity, leading to discomfort, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

Fortunately, there are effective non-surgical options for degenerative disc disease treatment that can help you manage pain, restore function, and improve your quality of life—without the risks and downtime of surgery.

In this blog post, we’ll talk a little bit about degenerative disc disease and the available non-surgical treatments we have used to great success with our San Diego patients.

Degenerative Disc Disease Diagnosis

Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is diagnosed via a combination of a health history, physical examination and radiographic imaging. Also, MRI can be utilized to diagnose and distinguish between a bulging disc, herniated disc, or sequestered disc.

To learn more, check out bulging discs vs herniated discs.

In addition, it is important to make an accurate diagnosis utilizing imaging to tailor a treatment program specific to each patient. This imaging will be very important if you decide to work with a chiropractor, such as the expert team here at Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego.

Now that we’ve given some basic insight into what this disease is, let’s get into treatment for degenerative disc disease.

Treating Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Disc Disease Home Care

There are steps you can take to heal your body while you are at home. Here are three such suggestions:

We recommend patients move their bodies as much as possible. For example, going for a walk, exercising, or simply stretching.

It is critical to maintain healthy core muscle strength to help support your spine. That is because the core muscles directly support your spine.

You should also eat a healthy diet, drink lots of clean water, and limit or quit smoking.

Degenerative Disc Disease Treatment

In addition to physical activity and eating right, common treatment options are:

Medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers

Surgery, such as artificial disc replacement and spinal fusion

Heat and cold therapy

Chiropractic Care

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Our doctors recommend that you not rely on pain killers. Not only do they not cure the problem, they are highly addictive.

Instead, we recommend a natural, non-pharmaceutical, non-surgical approach that includes NUCCA Spinal Care and Non-surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD). The combination of these two innovative and non-invasive treatments is very effective and provides pain relief to many of our patients here in San Diego.

NUCCA Spinal Care puts your body in alignment prior to your NSSD treatment. Plus, research studies have shown that 86% of patients respond favorably to Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression treatment alone. NSSD can also help treat disc herniation, facet syndrome and a slipped disc and a reversed cervical curve.

“Dr. Young and his staff have been wonderful. After my first visit I was actually pleasantly surprised to not have a screaming headache at the end of the day. Such an amazing experience to get some help without taking meds that have harmful affects in the long run, something I really appreciate. Don’t get me wrong, meds have their place and I’m an advocate for making sure to follow doctor’s orders. However, I wanted to see if I could be helped with appropriate adjustments before adding meds or surgery to my needs. I know my body has a good system to heal it sometimes just needs a reminder. Dr. Young and his team helped to remind my body to help itself get stronger.” – Intouch Chiropractic Review by Becky W.

Facet Syndrome is friction between spinal bones resulting in tenderness, swelling, stiffness and pain. Also, persistent, chronic pain in your spine is often linked to facet syndrome. In patients over 50 years of age, facet syndrome is usually caused by normal wear and tear. However, in younger patients, this condition is typically due to trauma and injury.

If you’re struggling with stiffness, discomfort, or limited mobility, you may be wondering: how do you treat facet syndrome? Fortunately, there are a variety of effective, non-invasive treatments that can help you regain comfort and function—many of which are available through chiropractic care.

In this blog post, we’ll cover a few basics about facet syndrome before getting into facet syndrome treatments you can pursue. First, what causes facet syndrome?

What Causes Facet Syndrome?

Facet syndrome can happen anywhere in your spine. This syndrome develops in the facet joints between each vertebra. Under normal conditions, these joints are in continuous motion giving the spine both flexibility and stability for every day movements.

Did you know that our joint surfaces are lined with cartilage allowing them to move easily over each other? So, as we get older, the cartilage gradually deteriorates, and growths called “bone spurs” develop. As a result, this increased friction between your spinal bones leads to swelling, tenderness, pain and stiffness.

Although, in many patients, arthritis is believed to be the result of aging, traumatic injuries and overuse speed up this degenerative process.

What are the Risk Factors for Facet Syndrome?

When a joint is damaged through injury, natural deterioration, or repetitive trauma, the joint will become stiff, swollen and painful. Although, you may experience inflammation, it is typically temporary. However, in arthritic joints, it may cause long-term pain or permanent disability. Below are additional risk factors:

Excessive weight

Overuse due to heavy physical labor or sports

Presence of conditions such as gout, infections or arthritis

Damage may be due to older injuries, including whiplash

Sleeping with your neck in a twisted position

Family history of facet syndrome

Sudden jerk of your neck

Even, twisting while you lift something overhead

Along with trauma to the spine

What are the Most Common Symptoms?

Pain that is worse in the morning or at the end of day

Change in weather can worsen pain

Lower back pain that travels into the thighs, buttocks, or pelvic area

Neck pain that travels into the head, shoulders or arms

Headaches that include aches behind the eye, pain at the base of the skull, and/or ringing in the ears

The sound of bone on bone when you move

Abnormal curvature of your spine

Numbness or weakness in your arms or legs

Pain when standing for long periods of time

Increased pain when riding or sitting in your car for long periods of time

How Is Facet Syndrome Diagnosed?

Accurate diagnosis starts with an experienced doctor. Facet Syndrome symptoms overlap with several types of disorders. Properly diagnosing the correct cause of your pain is critical to successful treatment.

Firstly, with a thorough clinical examination

Secondly, including a complete health history, review of your symptoms, and physical evaluation

Testing can include x-rays, MRI or CT scans

Lastly, these advanced diagnostic methods ensure that the source of pain is pinpointed

How Do You Treat Facet Syndrome?

The first line of treatment for facet syndrome is almost always non-surgical, focusing on relieving pain, restoring mobility, and preventing further joint degeneration. Here are three common treatments you may come across as you look to deal with facet syndrome:

Facet Joint Injections

Medial Branch Blocks

Radiofrequency Neurotomy

At our San Diego chiropractic office, we have seen success with facet syndrome patients using the following treatment types:

Chiropractic Care

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Above all, as chiropractors, we always encourage patients to opt for non-invasive, drug-free alternatives if at all possible. For instance, for some patients, pain management through narcotics will be required as a last resort. In conclusion, both chiropractic care and Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression are effective in treating neck and low back pain caused by this condition with a natural approach that does not require medication, injections or surgery.

Intervertebral disc herniation (IVDH), commonly known as a herniated or slipped disc, is a leading cause of back and leg pain. When the soft inner core of a spinal disc pushes through its tougher outer layer, it can compress nearby nerves, resulting in pain, numbness, or muscle weakness.

For many, this condition can be debilitating, but chiropractic care for herniated discs offers a non-invasive, drug-free path to relief and recovery. In this blog post, we’ll use our experience treating this condition at our San Diego chiropractic office to help you understand what this condition is and how it can be treated.

First, let’s quickly cover the stages of IVDH.

4 Stages of a Intervertebral Disc Herniation

Intervertebral Disc Herniation (IVDH) most commonly occurs in the cervical and lumbar spine.

Here are the 4 stages that cause this condition:

Disc Degeneration: During this stage, no bulging or herniation occurs. The nucleus pulposus (center of the disc) weakens due to chemical changes in the disc associated with the aging process. The disc becomes brittle and begins to dry out. Over time it becomes less able to absorb the shock of your movements. Physical changes in the disc due to trauma can also speed up this process.

Prolapse: During the prolapse stage, the shape or position of the disc changes. A slight bulge or protrusion begins to form, which may begin to crowd the spinal cord or spinal nerves exiting at that level.

Extrusion: During the extrusion phase, the gel-like nucleus pulposus extrudes into the thick wall of the annulus fibrosus. The extrusion is still self-contained within the disc at this point.

Sequestration: During this stage, the nucleus pulposus breaks through the annulus fibrosus borders, and moves out of the disc space into the spinal central canal.

Now that we have a basic understanding of the four stages of intervertebral disc herniation, let’s cover the causes before getting into available treatments.

3 Common Causes of Disc Herniation

Disc Herniation Cause #1: Wear and Tear on the Spine

Spinal pain from a herniated disc is often due to daily wear and tear on the spine. This is often called degenerative disc disease. Intervertebral discs act like shock absorbers for our spine and body. Discs are designed to absorb shock from movement, such as twisting, bending, sitting and walking. Over time, our discs deteriorate naturally. Physical trauma to the spine like a slip and fall or car accidents can accelerate the degeneration process making them more susceptible to early degeneration and spinal decay.

Over time, the tough outer layer of the disc (the annulus fibrous) begins to weaken, allowing the jelly-like inner layer (the nucleus pulposus) to push through, developing a bulging disc or herniated disc.

Disc Herniation Cause #2: Injury

Trauma and injury can also cause a disc herniation. A common way that patients hurt themselves and develop a disc herniation is by using improper lifting techniques. You can easily herniate a disc by bending at the waist without bending your knees and rotating your spine at the same time while lifting a heavy object. Car accidents can also create a shearing effect due to jerking movements on impact.

Disc Herniation Cause #3: A Combination of Degeneration and Injury

It’s possible for a susceptible and weakened intervertebral disc to experience trauma causing an immediate herniation. Sometimes, a minor injury is the final straw to a previously weakened disc. Something as simple as sneezing can be the final trigger to a disc herniating. Any small sudden force can be enough to cause a herniation to an already weakened disc. Disc herniations occur most commonly in the cervical and lumbar spine.

Finally, how can you treat a intervertebral disc herniation?

San Diego patient uses the spinal decompression machine to treat a herniated disc

Athletes constantly push their bodies to the limit, making them more susceptible to injuries and prolonged recovery times. From weekend warriors to full-time competitors, chiropractic care for athletes offers a holistic, drug-free approach to healing and performance enhancement that can help you get back in the game faster than ever.

At our chiropractic office in San Diego, CA, we regularly see athletes of every skill level with a wide range of injuries. We love working with athletes, because by nature they are determined and eager to do the work necessary to get back to their sport!

The majority of athletes put their bodies through tough workouts. For this reason alone, it is critical for athletes to keep their bodies in top shape to prevent sports injuries. According to a study in The Journal of Chiropractic Research and Clinical Investigation, 30% of athletes showed increased athletic performance when tested on balance, reaction time, and agility after 12 weeks of chiropractic care. Plus, chiropractic care has also been shown to improve coordination and speed in athletes.

In this blog post, we’ll get into more detail on chiropractic care for athletic injuries, including the benefits of such therapy and the types of injuries we regularly see at Intouch Chiropractic.

Chiropractic care is rooted in the understanding that optimal musculoskeletal and nervous system function is essential for peak performance. Expert chiropractors, like the team at Intouch, are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat neuromusculoskeletal disorders—issues that commonly affect athletes, such as muscle strains, joint sprains, and back pain.

By focusing on spinal alignment and joint health, our chiropractic care helps restore balance, reduce pain, and improve mobility, all of which are crucial for athletic recovery and performance.

More and more professional athletes are chiropractic patients because they realize that it helps them maximize their athletic performance. Major newspapers and magazine articles feature Arnold Schwartzeneger, former boxing champ Evander Holyfield, and football stars such as Emmit Smith, Joe Montana and Aaron Rodgers proclaiming the benefits of chiropractic care and the impact that it has had on their careers.

Our own Dr. Devin Young is proud to be the chiropractor for many runners, including Boston Marathon Champion, Meb Keflezighi. In fact, it is not uncommon for professional and college teams to have a team chiropractic on the sidelines.

Some of the benefits of a chiropractic care for athletes are:

Improved performance

Greater endurace

Increased range of motion

Faster recovery timee

Improved blood flow

Decreased risk of injury

Better posture

Decreased joint pain

Better flexibility

Greater focus and concentration

Improved immune function

The cumulative effects of consistent, small stresses over years can result in the same type of trauma that a severe sudden stress can. The great majority of sports injuries are not spinal injuries, but musculoskeletal injuries such as sprains, strains and stress fractures.

On the other hand, acute trauma such as fractures, dislocations or complete ligament tears are also possible. Although injury prevention and conditioning is important, they are often overlooked over the spirit of winning. While this seems illogical, the human drive to win many times becomes a priority instead of taking care of yourself.

Suffering from a slipped disc can be extremely painful. And if you’ve never experienced one before, but think you might have one, now diagnosing it can be challenging.

If you think you may have a slipped disc, we recommend visiting a doctor for a professional diagnosis. But if you’re just curious about slipped discs, keep reading.

In this blog post we’ll use our professional experience to help answer a common question – “what is a slipped disc?“.

Understanding Slipped Discs and Disc Protrusion

Spinal discs are tough, rubbery cushions between spinal bones. Spinal discs have a soft center (nucleus pulposus) surrounded by a tough outer ring (annulus fibrosus). A herniated disc is often called a ruptured disc or a slipped disc, because it literally cracks upon injury. When the outer ring cracks and the center spills out it is considered herniated.

A herniated disc causes symptoms when it physically pushes on structures that it is not supposed to be in contact with. It also acts as a chemical irritant to the surrounding tissues. Advanced imaging, such as MRI, is used to formally diagnose a slipped disc and disc herniation.

This condition most commonly affects the lower back or neck and can result from injury, aging, or repetitive strain. Despite the term “slipped,” the disc doesn’t actually move out of place but rather bulges or ruptures due to damage. Symptoms vary but may include radiating pain, tingling, or muscle weakness, and treatment ranges from rest and physical therapy to surgery in severe cases.

Speaking of symptoms, let’s get into the main slipped disc symptoms that our patients report when they visit our San Diego office.

Slipped Disc Symptoms

The majority of slipped disc or spinal disc herniations occur in your low back, although they can also occur in your neck. Signs and symptoms vary depending on the spinal level, and whether or not there is nerve impingement. Although disc herniations can affect both sides of your body, they typically only affect one side of the body at a time.

The most common symptoms of a disc herniation are pain, numbness and weakness to an arm or a leg. Many patients are asymptomatic, while others experience 10 out of 10 pain.

Here are some common symptoms:

Numbness or tingling: It is common for patients to state that they have local symptoms or symptoms that travel or radiate to body parts affected by that nerve.

Arm or leg pain: Low back herniations affect the buttocks, thigh, leg or foot. While neck herniations can result in hand, arm or shoulder pain. Pain due to disc herniations are oftentimes worsened when a patient coughs or sneezes, and is described as sharp or burning pain.

Muscle weakness: Some patients we see at Intouch Chiropractic in San Diego, CA report having a tough time with hand strength and lifting or holding items when they have a cervical disc herniation. Patients with low back herniations report leg weakness, feeling uneasy on their feet and even stumbling.

Please note that mild disc herniations can be asymptomatic for years, and most do not go away on their own.

Degenerative disc disease is most commonly an age-related condition where spinal discs lose flexibility and cushioning, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. While it can’t be reversed, modern degenerative disc disease treatments effectively manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Approaches range from conservative therapies to surgical interventions, tailored to each patient’s needs.

In this blog post, we’ll cover a few ways to treat degenerative disc disease. But first, let’s cover some of the basics about this condition.

What is Degenerative Disc Disease?

There are many causes of degenerative disc disease. In young and healthy people, spinal discs provide height between the vertebra and allow us to bend, flex, and twist our spine. Our discs act like shock absorbers between our spinal bones and help us stay flexible.

Some healthcare professionals argue that degenerative disc disease and a reverse cervical curve are part of the aging process. We disagree. We have seen young people with “old looking” spines and older adults with “young looking” spines.

Regardless of age, when degeneration sets in, our spinal discs shrink, become brittle and lose their integrity. They may begin to bulge or there is a disc herniation.

Learn more: Bulging Discs vs Herniated Discs

The amount of trauma our spine has received throughout life shows up as wear and tear on our spines. In some cases of disc degeneration, the disc space becomes so compromised that the face joints of the vertebra rub against each other causing extreme pain.

Spinal stiffness is also a common symptom of degeneration, especially in the morning or after being in the same position for an extended period of time. Unlike other body tissues, there is very little blood supply to the disc making it difficult for the body to repair the disc on its own.

Causes of Degenerative Disc Disease

Repetitive activities that cause micro-tears in the outer core of the disc (annulus fibrosis) are just as common as acute injures. This can be perplexing to patients, as one day they feel fine and the next day their back “goes out.”

In reality, the problem has been building until a minor twist of the waist creates massive back and hip pain. In contrast, an acute injury that shears the disc and causes the nucleus pulposus to be expelled into the central canal or spinal nerve foramen happens in one incident. These issues can also lead to nerve damage putting you at risk for developing neuropathy.

Degenerative Disc Disease Symptoms

Symptoms are most common in the lumbar spine (low back) or cervical spine (neck). The most common symptoms are:

Mild to severe pain

Pain that affects the low back, buttocks and thighs

Neck pain that radiates into the arms and hands

Pain worsened by sitting

Pain worsened by lifting or bending and twisting of the waist

Walking or moving reduces pain

Less pain by laying down or by changing positions often

Pain that comes and goes, lasting a few days to a few months

Numbness and tingling in arms and hands

Numbness and tingling in the thighs, legs, and feet

Weakness in the leg or arm muscles (caused by nerve root damage)

Now that we’ve covered some of the basics, let’s get into treatment options.

Treatment of Degenerative Disc Disease: 3 Non-Surgical Treatments

There are many ways that degenerative disc disease can be treated. And while surgery is one of the options, we always recommend non-surgical treatments first (unless surgery is absolutely necessary).

Check with your doctor before pursuing any treatment for degenerative disc disease.

Here are three non-surgical treatment options to look into.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Non-surgical spinal decompression slowly decompresses and relaxes your spine by cycling through relaxation and distraction phases. During your non-surgical spinal decompression session, downward forces of gravity are removed, creating negative intradiscal pressure and a vacuum effect. The cycles of distraction and relaxation promote the diffusion of oxygen, water, and nutrient-dense fluids from the outside to flow back into your disks. These nutrients enable the torn and degenerated disc fibers to begin to heal.

At Intouch Chiropractic, our patients see results quickly after partaking in non-surgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000.

Lifestyle Modifications and Pain Management

Weight management and avoiding strenuous activities reduce spinal stress. Low-impact aerobic exercises like swimming or cycling improve blood flow to damaged discs while minimizing strain. For pain management, heat and cold therapy can be a helpful tool. Ice packs reduce inflammation while heat alleviates tension.

Physical Therapy

Customized programs strengthen core muscles, enhance posture, and restore mobility. Techniques include guided stretching, resistance training, and ergonomic adjustments to protect the spine during daily activities.
